Costumes for the 2013 Disney marathon weekend?
Last year was not only my first time running a Disney Half but a half in general...so now I am hooked! I signed up for the Goofey challenge - so lets see.
What I noticed was all the glittery fun costumes a lot of runners were wearing. Many dressed up as Disney characters. I saw a fellow dressed as Snow White another man dressed as Tinkerbell. Women wearing pirate wigs and costumes and a whole lot of tutu's (worn by both sexes). I am thinking of dressing up too and was wondering who is and what are you planning on up dressing as...and if you did wear a costume like Snow White, how uncomfortable was it? |

![]() Seriously...the costumes are incredibly awesome, and my hat's off to anyone that wears them, but some of them just look like they'd be stifling after 13.1/26.2 miles. For the 2013 marathon I'm planning on ordering a Minnie-esque running skirt, and that's as far as I go! I'm too big a wimp to wear an actual costume during the race.

Wow, I dressed up as a sweaty runner, also!
Note that if this is your first full along with Goofy DO NOT costume up on Sunday. Running a full is like 3 halves and if you run the half the day before it can feel double distance. Take the stress off on Sunday. Run in a costume on Saturday when you will be out there a lot less time. As always, try the costume out on a longer training run. What feels fine in the house can turn into a real pain an hour into a run once it starts to get saturated.

I am doing my first Disney half (my 3rd half marathon) I was thinking about doing a superhero cape that I can stitch to me t-shirt and maybe matching knee socks.

I thought of that Cewait. How annoying are costumes after a while...they become heavy and cumbersome and in the way.
I was thinking of something light airy and if annoying - tossable. Something simple like a tutu and ears...but I know even ears can be annoying after a while. One girl told me (she wore a pirate wig) that she did the wig the whole 26.2 miles but wanted to toss it. It was hot and heavy and sweaty and irritating BUT she added she recieved so much attention from it thats what kept her wearing it! I don't know any other race in the world where you can wear a costume and not be looked at like some sort of a weirdo. |

That would be cool...it probably wouldn't be annoying after a while...since you plan on stitching it to your shirt.

![]() I second the idea of trying out the costume first...there's a rule that you never try anything new on race day (fuel, shoes, etc.) so why not try out your costume ahead of time as well? I hope you find something that works!

I love costumes and seeing others wear them! I TRIED to wear a tiara and tutu for the princess half. The tutu kept sliding down so I ditched it in the first half of the race. It was becoming a safety hazard! I finished with tiara only but it was starting to give me a headache!
For the full, my first, I will not wear a costume. : ) |

I'm likely going to pick an outfit "inspired" by Rapunzel. So, light purple top, slightly darker purple running skirt. Maybe do my hair in a braid. Not a full on costume, since anything more will likely be cause problems during my first full marathon.

I LOVE the costume idea, but I've always been chicken. My Mom and I wore tutus for our first Princess half in 2011 and they were so hot that we ditched them at about mile 5.
What I have seen that looks like it works well is if people wear tops/bottoms that correspond to a character. For example, pale yellow top and running skirt for Belle, etc. I think I'm going to be Alice sometime and I'm on the hunt for a light blue running skirt. Definitely agree with testing it out on a training run. Heck, I try out a "normal" race outfit on a training run.

I like the idea of creating a costume out of tech clothing so you're not suffering through 13.1 or 26.2 miles in some kind of polyester blend. Here are some ideas http://www.team-sparkle.com/category...ning-costumes/

There are definately some creative ways to run in a costume. I am going to put together something that is simple but obvious what I am..whatever that will end up being.
How many other races or anything in your life where you can wear a costume and run |

A friend of mine asked if I was in this whole running thing for the costumes. The answer is a resounding, unequivocal YES and I sized him up as a PERFECT Goofy. And I don't just do a simple costume, either. This is my costume for the Disneyland 1/2 next weekend, the inspiration was the ballerina from the Haunted Mansion and I have some links for suggestions/pictures of people's costumes.
My first half I also wore a costume (I went as Sailor Moon) and I'll be going as one of the IASW children for the Wine and Dine. I can tell you that it was definitely more fun. People cheer you on by your character's name and you do get more attention. For the full, though, I'm not planning on anything elaborate like for the 1/2s but I'm definitely doing something. Definitely don't run in anything you haven't tried out beforehand (when I took my first costume out for a test spin my friend said, "please tell me you didn't go out in public like that...") and don't be afraid of a costume! It can be something simple from regular running clothes and still be really fun and awesome, something that'll help get you through the miles. With the proliferation of themed running skirts (and I've seen photos of guys who glue white buttons on red pants/shorts and make themselves Mickeys), you can really easily put something together that's fun and functional . |
