A Christmas Earworm

What's the longest you've ever had an earworm? I'm about to share the misery with all of you. Haha. I've been singing "I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" for the last FIVE days! I can't get rid of it. Day and night, it's in my head. I went to set up for a Christmas party yesterday and by the time I left, everyone was singing it because I hummed it non-stop. How do you get rid of an earworm?? I swear I'm going insane! Can you hear it now? LOL.

Smelling like a horse doesn't make you a cavalryman
I'd wear a pair. I might even be able to get Mrs. Tex to wear some
I need to provide sufficient background in every post to make sense

Once something is in my head, it will stay for hours or even days. Even if it goes away for a while, and I have blessed silence in my head, they tend to come back like cold sores. In general, earworms seem to be sort of like hiccups -- they go away eventually, and you never notice it until they've been gone for hours.

The only active way to get rid of an earworm that's ever worked for me, is to get a different earworm going. And, of course, the replacement has to be more cloying than the original, so the treatment is often worse than the disease. My go-to is "The Syncopated Clock", which I believe is banned by the Geneva Accords.

I have never heard of it called an earworm before... I like that.

A few weeks ago I had Taylor Swift's song about never getting back together going through my head. It was terrible and lasted for days. I even caught myself singing it out loud at work. How embarrassing.

That one gets in my head a lot too. I don't even know all the words besides for that one part. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard, too so that is NOT pleasant!

Someone posted "Christmas Is All Around" from the movie Love Actually on my Facebook page, so that is currently in my head!

Went to see Jersey Boys last week, everything from "Walk like a Man" to "Who Loves You" will randomly pop into my head from the time I wake up till I go to sleep at night!

DS and I usually replace each other's with either the Brady Bunch or Sponge Bob theme.

Back in college, I would call my brother only to find out he was listening to whatever song I couldn't get out of my head. It was kind of eerie.

When my kids tell me they have a song in their head, I always sing as loud as I can "it's a small world after all..." For a looooong time, LOL...

Thanks a lot OP. "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" was running through my head during my exam this morning. I'm still singing it.

I've spent an entire marching band season (mid August through early November) with Seven Nation Army stuck in my head.

That's not a Christmas song, though...

ROFLMAO!!!

I have *NEVER* heard the term earworm and was hoping beyond hope that this was not actually a real worm in your ear.

/whew

I am glad it is a song and not a worm in your ear OP!

I have to admit that insects and all crawling things crawling in ears/noses/wherever is one of my phobia's! I cannot even discuss it. Watching The Wrath of Khan as a child has damaged me... Seeing The Matrix did NOT help either!

That was my first thought.

The year I had Hippopotamus For Christmas stuck in my head, I kept singing it out loud. DH gave me a stuffed toy hippo.

Copacabana generally destroys any earworm...sanity...intelligence... Either that, or listen to the song again. Really, it works.
