To start off you will get a better price and experience booking on your own.

If looking for once in a lifetime you can't beat helicopter ride to glacier and dog sledding. We used Coastal Helicopters and they were fantastic.

In Juneau we did a helicopter/glacier trek with Temsco. We booked on our own & saved hundreds since we're a family of 4. They offered a 20% discount if we paid in full by the end of March. Our money tree was wilting so we chose the shortest/least expensive of their tours, only 20 mins on Mendenhall Glacier, but looking back we should have gone for a longer one. Some are an hour long.
North Star Trekking (IIRC) had a lot of choices for more involved hiking/repelling, etc if you're adventurous.

In Skagway we did the White Pass Railway with Liarsville & gold panning. The train was neat but Liarsville is not exactly deluxe but my kids really wanted to pan for gold.
Dh & kids then did the Grizzly Falls Ziplining & loved it.

In Ketchikan we rode a float plane over Misty Fjord.
So beautiful!

Overall, we spent more on excursions than what we usually spend on a 7 nt cruise on the Magic but I can't imagine going that far and not seeing the best parts!

In Juneau, we did the whale watching and glacier. The good part was that my daughter got to see everything on her list, including a mother bear with 2 cubs (ok, her list just said bear). It was actually our second bear experience, but the first was from a bus--the bear was walking along the road!

In retrospect, helicopter to the glacier would be totally amazing, but we really wanted the whale watching.

Shore Tours had most of the same excursions that the cruise line offered at about 30% savings. The only thing we couldn't get thru them was the zip line in Victoria because the ship had purchased all the available slots.

In Juneau we did the Taku Lodge Flight and Feast. You fly in small planes over glaciers and land on the Taku River, then have an amazing salmon feast at a lodge. It was the highlight of our cruise.

Skagway: Glacier Point Wilderness Safari. This was a beautiful excursion on a beautiful day! The scenery was fantastic, got up super close to a glacier and saw a bunch of eagles and sea lions. One of them swam with the boat back to the port for a while.
Juneau: 5 Glacier Floatplane & Whale Watching Wildlife Quest. Amazing if you want to see glaciers from overhead. some of my best photos are from this excursion! On the day we were at Juneau, all helicopter-to-glacier excursions were cancelled due to low cloud but we went in the other direction to do this and had amazing views. The whale watching was good apart from the size of the boat all packed with people from DCL - you can do your own research and find a much smaller boat to get a better experience!
Ketchikan: Lighthouse, Totems and Eagles. After doing the other two trips this one was just ok. We saw a LOT of eagles (which was awesome) but we saw a lot on the whale watching trip too, and also at the glacier. So I would probably had picked something else had we known.

I have cruised to Alaska 4 times and have always wanted to do this. It gets more expensive each time I visit, so I'd better do it the next time I am in Juneau!

Anything involving flights will cost a lot of money. I did a Misty Fjords flight from Ketchikan on my first Alaska cruise. Unfortunately, it was TOO "misty" with a low cloud ceiling, so we had to turn back. I haven't been willing to spend big bucks to not see Misty Fjords since then.

Unless the cruise line has booked all the spots for a particular excursion, like the Glacier Point Wilderness Safari (Skagway), I prefer to book directly with the vendor and not through a third party booking company.

At the risk of hijacking the thread, any suggestions for a helicopter service?

I already have the whale watching bookmarked. They've come up with good reccs here on the DIS before.

Thanks

I second Taku Lodge. Beautiful flight over glaciers. A glacier and beautiful scenery right at the lodge. Nice meal, and you'll probably see bears (the kids will love that part).

Check out the reviriews on Tripadvisor.

We did a dog sledding deal in Juneau through DCL. Amazing. Helicopter to the glacier and plenty of with the dogs before and after the ride. Our DDs still talk about that. In Skagway we did the Yukon White Pass tour through Chilkoot Tours and Charters. Very good. We chose the tour bus up, train back option. We had a very small group and there were plenty of photo op stops along the way during the bus portion of the trip. In Ketikan we just did the rainforest sanctuary hike. Nothing spectacular but we all really enjoyed it. The AK cruise is really great and we hope to do it again. Have fun.

I'm seriously considering the White Pass directly through Chilkoot Tours--did you do the one that includes the puppies or the one that also includes the dog kart ride? What were your thoughts on that part and the "town"?
