Easy Pisa tour and climbing tower?

Hi, Just looking at the Port Adventures listed for the med next summer and I am considering booking the Easy Pisa tour for 4 of us and then independently booking two tickets to climb the tower for DH and my eldest son who will be 9 years old.

I can't justify paying the price DCL are charging to climb the tower, and as my youngest will still only be 6 years old and can't climb it anyway, I don't really want us seperating for two totally different tours. So my thoughts are to book us all on the Easy pisa tour together and then during the free time, 2 of us go and grab an icecream while the other 2 climb the tour.

I know I will be taking a gamble as I won't know exactly what time we will get to do our own thing - but for the difference in price I think it is worth the risk of making an educated guess.

What do you think? Has anyone done the same thing? How did it work out for you?

Many thanks for any advice

We took a private tour and did Florence and Pisa in the same day. We had pre-purchased our tickets to climb the tower at 3 p.m. It was an easy climb and we were in and out in less than 30 minutes. It was well worth it. My guess is you would have time to do it on your own, just be sure to pre-purchase your tickets and then you go to will call and pick them up prior to your scheduled time that day.

We did the whole thing on our own. Purchased climb tickets ahead of time. Got off the ship, walked to the train station, took the train to Pisa. Climbed the tower, walked around, had some lunch, took train back. Was very easy.

Tower climb doesn't take long at all, I waited at the bottom with little kids while dh climbed with the bigger ones.

Was a nice train ride, about an hour.

During one of our trips to Italy, we went to Pisa on our own. Good idea to pre-purchase tickets to climb the tower. When we went, the first available tickets were for 90-minutes later.

Be VERY careful about that. We pre-booked climb tickets and then couldn't find the ticket office and then didn't realize to proceed directly to the tower to go on the climb. There probably were signs, but of course we missed them.... Anyway, we were 10 min late for our climb time at the tower entrance and we almost were denied to climb, luckily she took pity on the lost Americans and up we went. The moral of the story is if you are late, you probably will be denied... They only allow one time period at a time up, as when we came back down, the next time was waiting outside until we exited....... If climbing the tower is your main goal, I'd look into either a private car/driver to take you or take the train as suggested above. The tour you're looking at only gives you 60 minutes of free time, sounds kind of hard to guess a time to book.

We also did it on our own last year. My DS (9 yrs) and DH climbed the tower, while my 2 year ran around the base for about 45 minutes and my mum & dad wandered the endless souvenir stands.

We bought our tickets ahead of time (you can book them 45 days prior to your arrival) directly from the Tower itself. We were glad we did....we got to skip the craziest line to buy our tickets [The ticket booth is in an adjacent building and the security guard had us go in that exit to exchange our vouchers because there were so many people at the main entrance). The climb itself was not crowded or rushed.

We used public transportation throughout the day, without any problems The most frustrating was getting our train tickets because the instructions were only in Italian for the automatic machines and we couldn't figure out how to choose the fast train. There is a line for agent help though at the train station.

We left for the tender at 11:00am and was back on the ship by 5:00pm

thanks everyone

Whilst I'm sure my son would like to climb the tower, I am thinking that I will just buy two tickets and not tell him we have them - that way if we get there and the timings are wrong then he won't be disappointed.

I am going to be 'braving' it with a DIY in Rome, Capri and possibly Monte Carlo - so I do like the idea of having some days where the stress is taken away from me, so think that the Easy Pisa trip will be the way to go for us.

thank you for your comments though - they have helped me to get a clearer idea of what I want from this trip
