Tom Cruise is SO not Jack Reacher!
I've seen the trailer for the new "Jack Reacher" movie (from the books by Lee Child) twice now -- I told DH that while I have to go see the movie, I know I'm not going to like it. I think I'll just have to pretend that this is a movie completely separate from the series, a series I have to pretend I've never read, in order to have any possibility of liking it. I just read the latest book in the series, and there's a long description of Reacher's physical attributes -- what was Cruise thinking? And how could Lee Child ever have agreed?

I agree. This has got to be one of the worst casting decisions.Ever. Lee Child goes into detailed description of Jack Reacher in every book, and Tom Cruise is not that by any stretch of the imagination. No amount of acting can cover it up....

I heard they dug a whole series of trenches and built scaffolding for Cruise to walk on while everyone else is in the trenches to give the illusion he's taller than 5 ft tall.

My husband went to a reading by Lee Child after his last book came out and after One Shot had been bought. Basically, he sold the rights, so he doesn't have any say in who was cast.
I agree, Tom Cruise isn't even close to Jack Reacher! I always pictured Adam Baldwin (no, he's not a Baldwin brother...)

I just started the newest book, "A Wanted Man" and I laughed when I came to the part of it which Reacher is described as 6'5'.
There is no way Cruise can look/act/be Reacher. I will not see the movie, it would spoil the books for me. I really don't like Lee Child any more for agreeing to his casting. But I really like the books. |

I nearly choked when I read that they had signed Tom Cruise; he's such a 'pretty boy'! I told my mom they are going to have to carry around milk crates for him to step up on when he needs to hit a bad guy. Either that, or the bad guys are going to have some mighty bruised up knees.

That's exactly what he said at the reading. Based on what my DH "read between the lines" he's not any happier about it than we are, but, also from what he said, he'd sold the rights to a studio, and Cruise optioned them himself, so we can't even blame a crappy producer, because that's Tom!

I'm not familiar with these books and am not a Tom Cruise fan but I remember when he was cast in Interview with the Vampire and thought it was ridiculous. Anne Rice even objected initially but he actually ended up doing an excellent job. I hope he pulls it off again and doesn't disappoint the book fans.

I am not familiar with the author or books.
Its funny because my friend and I were just talking about him and his past three wives, the children/adoptions/custody situation, the scientology connection and how strange he is overall. I have to say in some movies I have really enjoyed his performances...but his personality, overall aura maybe...is so "off" to me, that I am not a fan. I feel like he is so fake...the height things..like putting him on platforms, huge shoe lifts, altering pictures of him etc etc..to name a few...just so strange...never mind that whole Katie.. Jumping on the couch thing ( which was probably the only peek into what he is really like)...yeah, just weird...............

There is NO way he can portrary Reacher. It is entirely the wrong fit. I can't imagine what the casting people were thinking! Reacher is a BIG guy, whom people fear just by his presence. Sorry, that is not Tom Cruise.
I predict massive failure for this movie. |

Love the Jack Reacher books....Tom Cruise is NOT Jack Reacher. As someone already said, he's too pretty. And Reacher is something like 6'6''!! And a tough guy...not a typical hero type!!
Won't be going to the movie. |

I've never read the books in question, and think Tom Cruise couldn't act his way out of an empty room with directions in hand (he's the black hole of acting, he actually sucks acting ability out of real actors around him - see every movie he made with Nicole Kidman before she did that to her face for examples of this phenomenon). Hence I feel for anyone who likes a character only to find Tom Cruise playing him.
However, this discussion is amusing - it's like the Jackman/Wolverine fan rage in reverse!

Plain and simply...I hate the idea...saw the trailer on Friday...it just looked like another Mission Impossible.
