Both DS are into legos- the small blocks. Lego city has been the first true set around here. The concepts are basic when you start with the sets for age 5 and up. DS8 has always been a directions follower and builds most kits alone. DS4, well, he is younger, but I can see he is the 'just give me the lego guy to play with' kid... They both love the police station/firehouse sets. The sets don't always stay together once built, but that's the point, to create and build. We've moved on to Starwars and Ninjago and Super Heros, and Harry Potter, I know I'm missing something... The little sets they sell for around $5 are a great way to introduce him to many of the themes. Ninjago has a couple of them. Anyway, stick to an age closest to his and he will enjoy them!

Thank you so much everyone!! All of your input has been really helpful! Since he just turned 5, we decided to go with a set of bricks with wheels, etc and then a few mini figures and very small sets to see how he does. My sister is getting him a Ninjago spinner so he can try that without a huge complicated set...yet! Happy holidays everyone!!
