Should Black Friday move up a week earlier?

http://www.northwestohio.com/news/st...4#.UKl_pqV1P8s

Just read this article. It discusses the possibility of moving Black Friday up one week earlier. This way, these Black Friday sales won't creep into Thanksgiving. I think it's a great idea. That would solve the problem of workers being upset with retailers opening on Thanksgiving. Retailers could close on Thanksgiving because Black Friday will have been six days earlier. It would also help retailers by giving them six additional days of holiday shopping revenue. To me it seems like a win-win for everyone.

Except many of the shoppers have the Friday after Thanksgiving off of work, not the Friday before. Who would be shopping?

No...it's a dumb idea.

The majority of people have Friday off and can shop as they see fit. If you don't want it to "creep" into your Thanksgiving, then don't shop at the sales. Problem solved.

I think it should stay as the day after Thanksgiving, but the sales should START on FRIDAY, not how it has been creeping into Thursday the past couple years. Many people already have that Friday off from work/school.

That would never fly here---deer hunting season starts the week before Thanksgiving and if the men were out at camp, who would be here to watch the kids while the moms were out shopping????

It's really not a matter of choosing a day to be "black Friday". It's not a holiday like Presidents Day, to be moved around. It's a phenomenon that was born from the fact the Thanksgiving is the unofficial kick off of the holiday season, and historically people have been off from work that day and have often used the day to get a jump start on Christmas shopping and Christmas decorating.

In WI, it would be an awesome idea. Deer hunting is the weekend before Thanksgiving and retailers make just as much money this weekend as they do the weekend after Thanksgiving.

So I'd be all for it.

I voted a big giant no. Most people have to work that Friday before. I love Black Friday and the excitement of shopping. I work as a respiratory therapist at a hospital and we have to sign up for one of the 3 major holidays: Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years. Then, we have to sign up for 1 of the 3 major Eves: Christmas Eve, New Years Eve or Black Friday. So, while not technically a holiday. Out of those 6 days of the year, those are the 6 that most people want off.

I didn't think about that. That is a good point. However, I don't think that would stop the people that want to take advantage of Black Friday deals. I can rarely find a parking spot at the neighborhood malls at any time or day of the week between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's not like the malls are half empty during the work week. As long as someone can save $30 on a blu ray player, there will be ridiculously long lines no matter which Friday they kick off the shopping season.

I remember about a year ago when HP Touchpads had that fire sale. It was the middle of the work week, and every store that sold them had lines around the building to get one.

My office has the Friday after Thanksgiving off, but most people I know don't get that day unless they take it as a vacation day. That's why I think moving Black Friday would work just fine. The Christmas shopping season has already started anyhow, so what's the difference?

I agree. Most people I know except for teachers do not have the Friday after Thanksgiving off.

No, due to the day off mentioned above. I think retailers should go back to how it has been. Start early Friday if they want and stop trying to one up each other by pushing the times/days earlier & earlier.

DD18 has already said she doesn't want to go on Thursday and neither of us wants to cut the holiday short. We are doing our normal early Friday, but not too early, shopping trip. We tried the midnight thing last year and did not enjoy it as much.

Why not make it Black Saturday then? A week earlier, beginning Saturday.

Thinking back a few weeks ago...

These lines are from Friday, September 21st. There wasn't even an incredible sale. It was just a new iphone being released at full price.

People will still find a way to shop no matter the Friday.
