My #%>#¬% Trading Pin Ethics

I am 40 year veteran of the parks, and as I approach 45 as a married man (to another man, should you be curious), I'm finding it's lovely to discover myself hyper-ethical in my middle age! Ha! I'm planning an AWESOME solo trip at the end of January - Crowd Indexes of 1 and 2 every day, and full park hoppers!

I'm shy, and being on a solo trip, I decided I needed to find a way to interact with cast members more. PINS! Bought my matching t-****s and lanyard already, and did some reading about pins. I would be MORTIFIED if I bought a lot (eBay, amazon) and ended up with scrapers. I'd be totally embarrassed. I'd likely toss them if I saw rough edges or bad coloring. So, it seems like the smartest course of action is to buy from Disney Store online, yes? I'm seeing ten-piece sets for $12 and $13 at Disney Store.

Good Plan?

I actually decided to do the same thing on my solo trip next year. Buying from the source is always your best bet. I almost bought a lot on ebay but I read a few too many horror stories and decided against it. Someone here might be able to give you the name of a seller who sells the real deal. I got lucky and my Mom found 10 pins she didn't want so she gave me those!

WDW outlet shops at premium mall ia always good for genuine pins at bargin prices. So if you have chance visit th outlet before you get to the world to stock up. IMHO some of the pins are really nice, used this technique for my DD last year. By the way we are going end of January hopefully so I might see you there!!!

I've bought several lots on ebay... and never had any trouble, I only buy from a seller with good feedback and who ships the pins in individual bags so they don't scratch each other up on transit! Happy Bidding!

If you can truly find a 10 piece set for $12 from the Disney Store, then yeah, jump on it. However, make sure to look at the actual description. Several of the items have 8-10 pins pictured, but only include 2 of the pins randomly selected. Normally you will find a 5-7 piece set (see the Vinylmation pins) for $25-$27 or so. That's often the best that you will do unless you hit a clearance sale. Disney won't normally sell pins for less than $4 per piece in a set for the simpler pins, and the prices go up from there.

Buying on eBay can be ok. However, you get what you pay for. Knowing that pins normally retail for at least $5, can you really expect to get authentic pins for $1 (or whatever the bulk price works out to be)? One or two, maybe. But someone selling dozens of pins, or heck, dozens of lots of dozens of pins, at way less than retail should throw up a red flag.

If you look, you can find people selling single pins for $3-5 or lots that are shown in the picture. Those ones may be completely legit. However, keep in mind that when you trade with CMs, there is a pretty good chance that the pin you are trading for is a scrapper. Lots of people do buy them, and then trade them, and most CMs don't know, or don't care. So your fully legit $8 pin could very well be getting traded for a 50 cent scrapper. Just something to keep in mind when trading.

Have fun on your solo trip, I did one once (my partner didn't want to go..can you believe he was Disney'd out..LOL) He will go once a year with me, no arguements, no fuss....BUT somtimes I just need a little weekend to 4/5 days. You know! Enjoy your trip. I do pins (a bit). i am not big into them sometimes I trade, sometimes I don't. I like doing themes when I go..collect a certain character or movie it makes for a great challenge and conversation..last trip with my partner I did Chip and Dale..they went crazy when they saw my lanyard full of notheing but themselves for our photo together. I think they took up a little ore time than the sould BUt I got great pics with my camera and photopass ohotos were great too.

Have a magical time!

Just FYI, the little baggies tends to imply scrappers (not always but usually). Disney doesnt sell pins in baggies.

Anyway OP, keep your eye on the disney store. They tend to have holiday sales.

Thank you all!

I think what I'll do is likely buy a small lot from a well-rated seller on Amazon or eBay and pluck out the ones that don't look right, as well as buying a few from the Disney Store and in-park, then mix 'em all together with extras in my pocket. That way, I can keep the few I love and replenish from my pocket.

I'd love to be able to buy a huge bunch of legit pins from the Disney Store, but that's just not in the cards $-wise. But, at least with a bit of a basic education about scrapers and such, I can pluck out the ones that are obviously suspect. I'm going to snoop around concerning Disney outlets too.

Two curiosities -

Do cast members ever seem to offer to trade first, or are they trained to allow the guest to ask first?

Most of the things I read say don't bother with the trading tables, that they're generally full of pin-trading sharks. Yes? No?

No, we won't ask first, but if you walk up and seem to be looking at our lanyard we immediately hold it up for you to see (well, most cast members anyway). We learn to tell if someone is interested pretty quickly, and most of us love to pin trade. Lots of times if you approach one CM to inspect their lanyard every other CM in the vicinity will come over and hold theirs out too!

There is a thread here which will help you choose a seller:
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2213419

I bought from one of the "orange" sellers retiredreadingspecialist, once when she was "green" and then again when she was "orange" because she shipped really quick and had great customer service. My pins from her were fine as far as I could tell but I am no expert.

This thread, http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2213419, from the Collector's board, has lists of ebay pin sellers deemed to be trustworthy and those to be avoided. It might help you out! Pin trading can be a lot of fun. My best advice is to try to start with a theme so you don't feel overwhelmed -- a favorite character, collecting ride pins, looking for something specific so you're not just trading willy-nilly -- you'll be out of traders very quickly if you just trade for things you like (I trade mostly for Mickeys, but if I see something that REALLY catches my eye I'll trade for it). If you buy on ebay and you're very concerned about scrappers, look for listings where they show the ACTUAL pins you'll get, not just "this is a sample of the pins you may receive." I sell on ebay occasionally, and ALWAYS put pictures of the actual pins I'm selling -- pictures I take at home, and not photos picked up from another site.

I am stocking up on pins to trade for our trip next June. I found kittykat2bad and disneypinfanatics on EBAY to be great sellers. They sell original Disney pin packs for a good price. Have fun trading on your trip!

The last 2 trips we've taken, they have had a lanyard and pin set (8 pins) as part of the purchase with a purchase deal (not sure what it is called). For example, spend $## and get the lanyard/pins for $@@ (I believe it was around $15)

I have also bought off e-bay, but never in a huge lot; from a reputible seller and they were usually $2-4 a pin. I would also feel really bad trading a scrapper.

I have read that mousepinsonline has grab bags that are legit (25 pins for $40, they also have bigger and smaller lots) ~ however, I have never used them personally.

That happens all the time!! I cant tell me how many times a cm has asked me what I am looking for and then he/she calls over other cms in the area to see if they have it. I love that about Disney!

I have tons of those. Scrappers have really flooded the "market." I would estimate 40% of the ones I have gotten from a CM are fake, but I don't care. As long as they look real enough, they look pretty on my wall. The ones that really bother me are the ones that LOOK fake. I saw one Belle on a CM lanyard that had a GREEN face. Green face...really? I almost traded for it just because it was so painfully fake .
