Well the spin-off thread to this (with the poll) has 40% of posters reporting for non-spam posts. 40%! There are more tattletales here than I thought. And folks who dig through old threads and report them - really?

I think the first year the person was right because I ended up knowing who won ahead of time because of it, and then the next year they were wrong. But it could have been the opposite.

I don't recognize you or your user name. It's possible, but I don't remember you at all as a poster, let alone as someone who I've seen be mean to someone (whether for real or in jest). If I did, and it was an inside joke that might have been unclear to people not in on it, I apologize. But I don't remember any incidents or interaction with you. And I am 100% sure that if I ever did report someone, I would not announce it on the thread or in a PM.

Huh ? I've explained what type of tattletale behavior I am talking about: People trying to enforce DIS rules where there is no rule being broken, but just the slight potential for it. And doing this by announcing on a thread, "You're breaking a rule, you bad, bad person." It's just silly. On top of it, they act proud that they were the first one to tell you so.

I'm not sure why you said the pot/kettle thing. I haven't reported people for reporting people . I'm not reporting people by starting this thread (that apparently a lot of people agree with) that pokes fun at the Bobby Brady hall monitor behavior. This thread is mostly meant in a fun way, but also in a "yoo-hoo" way to the handful of people who constantly like to point out to others that "You're breaking a rule!!!!". Especially when most of the time I see it, no rule is even being broken.

So maybe in a way, yes, I am "reporting" the behavior of this group. But who I am trying to report it to is themselves so that maybe they'll quit doing it. Everyone else here already knows how childish the behavior is.

There is a huge difference in someone being a tattletale (or making a horrid attempt at being the teacher's pet?), and someone alerting the "authorities" in whatever setting that someone is being hurt (even if in a very minor way, as in the Survivor spoiler thing from a few years ago).


And I've actually never had this happen to me on any threads that I've started. But I've seen it done to other people countless times, as recently as last night. It's just obnoxious.

design mom, its not the people that report because they truly think they are doing a service, or helping, it's more those that do it then come and tell you they've done it......yay? I mean...really? It's kind of the equivalent of them stamping their feet...at least it is in the little movie that plays in my head when they do it

I'm not sure what you are getting at other than it's ok to tattle on someone but not tell the person you are tattling on them?

Also, name calling is not nice and can to lead to tattling.

I've been on the DIS since the late 1990's and I think I have reported one or two posts. If I feel something is going on I make a brief post stating my feelings or I just leave. Really, I think some people just take all this stuff too seriously. It is only cyberspace after all.

She isn't getting at anything other than posters acting like 2 years olds and basically stamping their cyber foot and yelling I am telling mom on you. That has been very clear. Also complaining about people having think skin and reporting for basically nothing. Name calling isn't nice? sure it isn't, but we are adults, we should be able to take a little unpleasantness in a heated discussion.

There are posters on this board who love to lambast others and say cruel things. I've come to the conclusion that it's just a communications issue - some people don't know how to express themselves properly - or it's a maturity/moral reasoning problem - they don't realize what they're doing because the internet is too abstract for them.

And honestly, I think we ALL are, at one time or another, guilty of both problems.


I can ignore a DIS poster as well as the next person.

I have reported maybe two or three non-spam threads. One was the Survivor Spoiler poster. The rules on this board are no talk of religion or politics and be civil. This board has a reputation for civility.

My mom taught kindergarten for about 30 years. Before a kid would tattle, she would ask him/her "Is someone being hurt by this?" If the answer was yes, she told kids they SHOULD report what they knew. Otherwise, let it go.

I think that's a good rule to follow. That whole "snitches get stitches" thing bothers me on so many levels. As a mandated reporter, I, on more than one occasion, had to report child abuse/sexual abuse when I taught. Later, in at least two cases, I found out other adults had known but hadn't said anything because they "minded their own business." That still makes me sick to my stomach to think about. If you prefer to keep your mouth shut when someone else is being hurt because you're not a stitch, I really don't want to be friends with you. You make my skin crawl.

You are absolutely right!! That is what the little red button if for!!! Moderators can't be everywhere, all the time. And other than the Transportation board, I have absolutely no powers anywhere!!! So, if I see something truly offensive on, say, the Theme Parks board, I will report it. I do try to diffuse the situation, but sometimes I just end up not helping at all!!!

It's not that we don't 'need the help of the hall monitors', it's that most hall monitor types are pretty self serving. They are feeling abused and picked on, so they run to mods and tattle..and the ones that usually end up getting 'slapped'??? The one that tattled!!! Sad but true. I have had more post reports from those that felt attacked, when they weren't being attacked at all. It's about the same thing as the kids in the back seat of the car...'Moooom, he's touching me.' 'But Moooom, she pulled my shirt first!!!!'...and on it goes!!!
Those are the reports that drive mods crazy!!! Everyone is entitled to their opinion....as long as they state it politely and civilly!!! But no....there is always that one person who thinks their way is the only way...and when anyone, anyone at all, questions that opinion??? Oh, the fun starts!!!

I haven't come across any spam posts. If I did I would report those.

As for other posts, I don't report because I like to watch what ensues for my own entertainment. Some people shouldn't be saved from themselves.

Some of you may think that reporting posts is tattling, and everyone is entitled to thinking whatever he/she wants. However, I'm grateful to the people who report posts to help us keep the boards a family friendly environment.
