Grrrr!! So angry right now... have to vent :(

I have been trying to get a medical test result and have been calling for a week. The dr. will not get back to me. Everytime I talk to the person at the front desk they say "she will call you back" or "the doctor is not here, I have to take a message." I know the result is in my file and all it takes is for someone to read it to me. This is going on Day #4.

Am I being realistic or is there something I'm not considering here? Because of this I want to have my medical records moved to a new doctor.

Tell them that. I bet you get a call back pretty quick. Sadly, this time of year, doctors are notorious for being unavailable.

Only the doctor can release medical information. It will be the same with any practice. On a positive note, from someone who has gotten bad results many times, no news is usually good news.

Take this up with the doctor- it's not the staff's fault. Don't know how many times we (the staff) get tons of attitude for doing what the doctor tells us to- and then the patient is sweet as pie to the doctor. Trust me, we do what we're told.

Yeah I kind of figured that. They only get direction from the doctor. Because of this I already found a new doctor. My primary care physian always calls me back within a few hours and he is a mean son-of-a-gun. Always busy and barking. So I don't know why this other doctor took 4 days. Oh and by the way, after this thread I got my answer..but the result was given to me by a staffer and not the doctor.

Well ... it IS Christmas week. That my have something to do with it. And if this is "Day 4", that means you started calling a day or two before Christmas? Doctors do have real lives, after all.

Sometimes giving someone a deadline is a lot more effective than just calling back every day and asking over and over again, particularly if you might be coming across as frustrated and annoyed. The people answering the phone can be with you or against you. Next time you call, maybe say (nicely), "I'd love to get the results of this test before I leave town tomorrow afternoon. If there's any chance I could get it before noon tomorrow, that would be great." You can help them help you by providing a reason why the doctor should call you back sooner rather than later. I imagine you're not the only message she has to respond to.

Each medical office has a different way of doing things.

I have a doctor that calls me directly whether the results are normal or abnormal. I have another doctor that will let his staff call with result but ONLY if they are normal. Until he reads the bloodwork and signs off on it, the staff cannot give me the results. This is what it sounds like happened to you. The staff could not give the results until the doctor actually read them.

I'm having the same exact problem right now. I've been waiting just as long for the results, and they haven't gotten word to me yet. I figured it would take extra time since the holidays, but it's been long enough. Very frustrating!

I had a problem with the staff at my doctor's office recently, where they repeatedly announced why I was there to the rest if the room. I suppose they aren't actually doctors, and maybe don't need to follow the same privacy rules? But I didn't appreciate them announcing the fact that I was there for a pregnancy test multiple times to the lobby.

Totally agree. I had a test result come back where I was called immediately. If there was something wrong, the doctor would get you your results.

I have blood drawn regularly at a lab. There is now the option to have the results mailed to me and/or to get the results on a smartphone app. Before that option was available, I always asked my doctor to mail the results to me. She calls me upon her electronic receipt of the results if they would change my treatment plan, but otherwise she sends me a letter with a copy of the results. As the electronic medical record is rolled out at each facility, ideally we will be able to go online and see our own lab results as soon as they are available.

I always get results from office personnel or a nurse when things are OK. The one time things were off I was called and told to come in the next day that they were working me in.

This is a lousy week for staffing in drs. offices!! DH needed to see his surgeon for a follow up this week (had surg. on 12/12) and the surgeon was in the office ONE day this week!!! He also needed to see his cardiologist and the only appointment we could get was tomorrow at an office 30 miles from our house!! The dr. wasn't going to be in the office closer to us.

DSis works in a pediatrician's office and said 1/2 of the doctors in the practice were out this week.

So OP, I feel you--but I think I'd get the name of the doctor's assistant or his nurse and stalk her via the phone until you get your answer.

The medical group my Doctor belongs to gives patients the option of having all their test results posted on a secure website. I get them at the same time the Doctor does.

Our GP does this, too. You can log in for all of your immunization records, dates of visits, medications, and results of tests, etc. Unfortunately, the specialists do NOT participate.

Oh, I've known a few office staff's who 'run' their doctors. I left those practices PDQ.
