waiting in a counter service location

Were you ever notified by a cast member that you could not be sitting in a counter service if you are not eating? A friend of ours when to the World 3 weeks ago, he was with his wife, 4 years old son, and 2 years old twins, he was in a counter service in Magic, a cast member came to him while he was waiting, with the kids, for his wife to come back with the meals. He had to leave the table, with the kids, and wait until they had their meals to sit down...
We've been going to the World forever, my husbund doesn't speak a word of english so I always go get the food while he waits at the table, with the kigs or without them... I am surprised that such a familly concept place would act like this.

1990 to 1992 Off site
1994 and 1995 Off site
1998 and 1999 Off site
2000 to 2003 All star Sports
2004 to 2011 Pop Century
2012 The World was great again (Pop Century) without the kids for the 1st time
March 2013 Disneymoon with the kids

That is crazy. We have never ordered food with out first finding seats. Don't want to drag seven kids and food trays all over a crowded place.

This is relatively new policy and not at all CS locations. While I don't like to drag my kids around while we order it is much more pleasant than standing with them and eating because we don't have a table. This happens very frequently during busy times of the day at several locations.

Yes, that has been the policy for a while now. If its not too busy they may not enforce it

Sounds like a miscommunication, very hard to believe.

This only happens when the place is really busy. Its so that people with their food don't have to stand around waiting for a table to empty.

It is only some CS places and certain times of the year, but yes, it is true.

Not a miscommunication. Too many people are standing around with food and not able to get a table. The new BOG in Fantasyland solves this as you are not able to get to the seating area until you place you order. It has a much bigger area for ordering and they bring your food to the table so no standing around. Much better.

I wish they would all change and do the same thing BOG does. That way no worry about people standing with food looking for seats and would make it easier for families with little kids.

I have PERSONALLY seen this put into place and work quite well:
1) This is in place at busy times at several counter service eateries.
2) It is a good policy.
. . . it increases the turnover of tables
. . . it allows more tables to be open more often
3) I do not have a problem with the rule, and highly approve of it.
. . . there are no down-sides to it
. . . it allows more people to sit and eat
. . . it stops people from taking seats from patrons who are eating

I know it can be stressful to not have a table already when you get your food, but honestly, part of the problem of not being able to find a table is that so many people are taking up tables who aren't eating yet.

It is a very inefficient way to use table space, and I wish they would enforce that rule more often. It's one of the reasons we don't eat CS anymore.

We refuse to be rude and take up a table when we don't have our food, but it leaves us wandering around with our hands full looking for a table, and can't find one because half of them are filled with people who don't even need them yet.

I, too, wish this was done more often. On out last trip, we were a few feet from an open table in a very full CHH, when some "lady", without food, pushed past us to snag the table. I looked right at her and said, "Are you kidding me? You don't have food and felt it was necessary to steal that table as we were about to sit down?" She didn't say a word and just looked away. Had the kids not been with me, I would have created quite a scene.

Yes this is the policy now but I have only seen it during peak times. I remember a family at Restaurantasaurus at AK - they had sent their two teenaged sons to find a table while the mom and dad got food - but the CMs kept telling the kids they could not hold a table and wouldn't let them sit down. They kept coming back to their parents saying they couldn't sit down and their parents kept sending them back to find a table - happened twice. The parents didn't understand it was procedure.

The CMs are the ones who direct people to tables during busy times (you are not allowed to find your own table) - it gives Disney better control over seating when it is crowded. But I can see that if you weren't expecting this it might seem rude but I think they are just trying to serve more people more efficiently. Anyway - hope your friend will understand it was probably policy and most likely not personal. Sorry he had a bad experience.

You're more polite than I am then.

I would have easily said, 'we'd love extra company' and sat down anyway and started eating.

$10.00 says she'd leave after a few minutes

There definitely are down sides:
1) You have to have the kids in line with you (or standing behind the lines blocking up the works).
2) We intentionally take awhile to sit at CS places, so that the kids' little legs can get some extra rest (Go onto some of the kids are too old for stroller debates - some of us intentionally give them additional rest time to avoid that situation). This leads to standing during food prep time instead of constructively using the time for needed rest.
3) If we have our food and there are still no tables available - now I'm trying to steer kids AND trays of food to a table and stalking a table, instead of casually checking for available tables - as I do before we have table - not breathign down anyone's shirt. When I have food in hand - I am MUCH more likely to stalk and/or argue over 'I was here first'.

I dislike this policy, but luckily haven't run into it often. We usually eat at off-times so this is likely why.
