GALVESTON — A pregnant woman who was having “pregnancy issues” was air lifted from the Disney Magic early Saturday, officials with the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The cruise ship that set sail from Galveston was about 180 miles into the Gulf of Mexico when the ship’s captain called for help at about 9:15 p.m.

The captain told the Coast Guard that the 31-year-old woman was having “pregnancy issues” and needed to be air lifted off the ship.

The Coast Guard sent an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Ellington Field that was supported by a HU-25 Guardian jet that came from Corpus Christi.

Rescue crews arrived at the ship at about 12:45 a.m. Saturday. The woman was hoisted aboard the chopper and taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch’s John Sealy Hospital in Galveston.

The health condition of the unidentified woman and her unborn child were unknown Saturday.

Disney officials said they have a policy that any passenger who is more than 24 weeks pregnant is not allowed to sail.

I read a post about a dcl ship turning back to port for an emergency involving a small child. His mother said that the ship turned back because an airlift would cost approximately $30,000 and they could not afford it, nor did they have trip insurance. Disney made the call to arrive late at Castaway Cay late, much to the discontent of the disers who replied.
I only wonder if the patient will have to pay for the airlift? Anyone have information on this?
