Platinum Cinderella DVd vs. Diamond Blu-ray

I have in my collection the Platinum Edition Cinderella DVd. I think we've watched it twice, but now that I finally have a daughter I know it will be in heavier rotation. Is it worth it to buy the new Blu-ray? My DVD is not widescreen -- is the Blu-ray? Will it fill a wide-screen TV? Thanks!

Cinderella is not a widescreen movie. It was filmed in 1.33:1 Academy ratio, which is the same aspect ratio as old TVs. I believe the Blu-Ray preserves the original aspect ratio of movie, meaning that there will be black bars on the sides of the picture when played on a widescreen TV. However, this does preserve the full picture; it is the way the movie was originally presented in theaters and is meant to be seen. Widescreen TVs have the capability to zoom in on the picture so that the letterboxing is removed, but zooming in actually crops off the top and bottom of the picture.

If you don't mind cutting off part of the movie, then the zoom option is the only way for you to make it "fill the screen", but, if you do buy the Blu-Ray, I would suggest watching it in letterbox so that all of the brilliant work by Disney's artists can be fully appreciated.
