When Will The Heartache Stop? Happy Update

I posted last week about the adoption of our newest canine member of the family, a little dachshund named Bella. She was adopted after we had to put 2 of our beloved family pets down in 3 weeks. Yesterday as my DH was taking the trash out, he had our garage door open to do so, the neighbor's German Shepherd escaped through the open gate next door and ran into our garage and mauled sweet little Bella. My DH had to get the GSD to release her but she bit her in the neck.

He rushed her to our vet and she had a tear to her trachea and numerous bite marks. Currently she is under sedation and we had to switch her to another vet hospital to do surgery. Her chances look better than they did yesterday, but they are still calling her condition guarded. In the process of trying to breakup the 2 animals, DH was bit in the upper thigh by the GSD.

The vet bills already are already over $1,500 and the neighbors are currently in the process of foreclosure so I doubt that we may get reimbursed. I called Animal Control to let them know that my DH was also bit in the altercation yesterday and they said that the dog now must be quarantined for 10 days. They fined the owners $100 for having a dog at large but couldn't do anything else.
If you have it in your heart, please say a little prayer for our Bella. DD6 is devastated with this recent incident. I am just grateful that DH is going to be okay and no one else was hurt.

Prayers said for your precious Bella. I am so sorry this happened to your pup and your husband, I hope they heal quickly.

And I hope the heartache ends very soon. What a sad situation.

Oh poor Bella, I'm so sorry. We have a dachshund named Autumn, we will keep Bella in our thoughts.
Please be sure Animal Control follows up on this and don't be afraid to take the neighbors to court! Our neighbors dog killed our cat (the cat was under the tree in my front yard and their dog charged her and crushed her) and we pursued it legally.
Please keep us updated.

Oh poor little thing! To be where you belong in your own home and be attacked!!

I most certainly will hope and pray that she pulls thru this ordeal.

I'd also follow up with the police about the other dog being vicious, not just the bite, but that fact that it came onto your property and attacked and nearly killed your dog.

Why do people keep and have dogs they can't control or train? I will never understand that. I don't blame the poor German Shepard, it is it's irresponsible and ignorant owners fault.

I'm so sorry about your little Bella and your husband! How scary that must have been!

A few years ago our St. Bernard attacked the neighbor's dog and ended up killing it. We had our Saint tied up in the backyard AND we have a chain link fence. She somehow got loose of the leash and crawled underneath the fence and ran across the street to get to the neighbor's dog, who was trained to stay in their yard but they have no fence. We felt absolutely horrible and put our dog to sleep that same day. The neighbor's did end up sueing (sp?) us and our homeowners insurance covered it, but we ended up being dropped from that insurance years later for this reason.

We currently have a little bulldog that is our baby and I would die if I witnessed something like this happening to him.

How terrible, sending prayers for your Bella's complete recovery and thankfully your DH is ok. You've sure had your share of heartaches of recent, time for a welcomed break . Hopefully the foreclosure neighbors still have their homeowers ins, which should take care of all expenses. ((hugs))to your lil DD too.

Praying for your Bella. I can't imagine how terrifying that situation would have been. I hope that Bella pulls through and makes a full recovery. I also hope you DH will be okay as well.

I think that you should pursue filing charges against the German Shepards owner. The dog came onto your property and attacked for now reason. The owners are responisble and should be held accountable. What if the German Shepard had done that to a small child?

So sorry you have to go through this

1st Trip- May 2009- CBR
2nd Trip- Sept 2010- POFQ- MNSSHP
3rd Trip-June 2012- Offsite condo.
