Remy or not?

Trying to decide if Remy would be right for us.

We are a family of four - all adults. Our girls are college age. We did Palo brunch with them last May and they really enjoyed it. DH and I have done Palo dinner before and it was nice - we enjoyed it.

The issue I am having is all the fantastic reviews about Remy - yet we are not a family that likes a lot of fuss. We had Palo dinner booked during our May cruise and skipped it. We didn't even go to the dining room - we actually ordered room service and sat on our verandahs and ate dinner as we were leaving Nassau. We were just tired of dressing for the MDR -and wanted some down time.

So I am really torn. I feel like I am going to be missing out on something super special if we don't go - yet I really do get tired of the "fuss" is that is the right word.

Maybe it was just our serving team last time that we needed a break from. We really enjoyed our assistant - but the waiter - ugh.

So for unfancy people we really do not like to be fussed over - in your opinion/s should we go for it - or just plan on Palo brunch - maybe dinner and leave it at that?

One more thing - we are not big seafood eaters. While I do like to try new things looking at the Remy menu makes me a bit concerned I am not going to like the food and I so do NOT want to offend any of the waitstaff or otherwise simply because it might be a bit too much for us.

I was on the maiden voyage for the Fantasy and unfortunately I could not get a reservations either for Palo or Remy. Since I have dined at Palo's numerous times I would have enjoyed to have the dining experience at Remy's just once. The maiden voyage was a fabulous cruise and my only regret was not getting to dine at Palo or Remy. I was told if you don't do when you have a chance you may regret it later.

Based on your description of yourselves and your eating preferences, I don't think you would enjoy Remy. I thought it was the best foodie experience ever, but it was a four hour meal, they did fuss over us, the chef came out and talked to us for several minutes about some of the dishes, etc. It's absolutely a big deal and makes the MDR look simple by comparison. DH wore a tux and I wore a formal gown, nobody was dressed even slightly casual in Remy the night we were there.

You shouldn't feel that you are "missing out on something super special". Just because it's super special to others doesn't mean it will be your cup of tea. You should do what you like and enjoy your cruise.

My suggestion would be to at least try Palo brunch just to see if you like it. They have tons of options food wise and the dress is more casual than dinner (although still no jeans or shorts).
I am a jeans and t-shirt gal at home, but I don't have a problem dressing up when an opportunity for fine dining presents itself. So to me Palo and Remy are worth the trouble.
Plus DCL is all about making you happy. I would just tell your server at the beginning of the meal that you don't want a fuss made and then I would think they would at least know to not hover or stay to chat.

For Palo brunch a casual skirt and top are fine for women and dockers/polo shirt for the men. You would probably be fine with that at Remy brunch if you decided you wanted to try that as well. But I don't think Remy brunch gives you much of a choice for food-I have heard they have a set menu so maybe not the best choice for anyone less adventurous eating wise.

The dinners are a little more dressy. I recall seeing a mix from casual dresses to semi-formal to a few formal. I have a little black dress that is comfortable that I usually rely on.

I would suggest looking through pictures from trip reports to get an idea of what people are wearing and decide if you want to go that route or not.

I would start with Palo brunch to get your feet wet

I agree with PP about trying to fit the OP self description of what they like / prefer and matching it with what is the experience of Remy. I have had 3 dinners at Remy and the new lunch.

Based on what I read in the OP, I think that Remy may not be a good idea. They do indeed fuss over you quite a bit and it tends to be at least a 3 hour dining experience. For 4 people you are looking at a $300 bill not including any alcohol or extra tip.

It sounds like Palo is fancy enough. I agree that it would be nice to try the brunch. There are so many food choices, hot and cold. The atmosphere is even less fussy than dinner. Just my honest opinion.

Based on the impression I'm getting from OP's post, I'd suggest skipping Remy. Do Palo brunch or dinner.

Remy would be $300, and that's a lot for something you aren't sure about! It is 3 hours of "fuss."

If you skipped Palo in need of down time (Remy takes longer) and do not enjoy dressing up/fancier foods are not a big enough draw to do so I too would suggest skipping it as well.

Maybe it's just me, but while I wouldn't use the word "fuss" but it's been our experience that you get a lot more personalized attention in both Remy & Palo, as opposed to the MDRs. Based on that assumption (I know bad to assume), I'm guessing that the OP might still have a problem at Palo, either Brunch or Dinner. But who knows. .

We have done Palo - twice and we enjoyed it each time - but I think for us it is about as fancy as we want to go.

I am sure we will book Palo again for our upcoming cruise - but just not sure yet about Remy. It's not the money that would keep us from going. Not at all. I honestly am not sure I would like all of the food and if I didn't I know I would feel uncomfortable and probably embarrassed. I wouldn't want to disappoint anyone or make them feel like they were not doing a good job.

OP, if you can manage to go on the ship's art tour (it was held twice on our 5 day cruise on the Dream), you can at least see the interior of Remy. Seeing the venue up close may help you make a decision. Remember to take your camera on the tour, and take a photo of the gold fixtures in the ladies' washroom nearest Remy and Palo!

Based on everything that I can see in your post, I would skip Remy. Honestly, I think you should do what you're the most comfortable with and to me that sounds like room service, and the fast food places.

When I first read the original post, I had the same reaction as many of the other posters. Why spend the money for an experience that isn't a good fit for you? However, then I read this:

My sense is that there is a part of you that feels as though you are missing out, and there is a part of you that wants to try something new, but you are afraid that you wouldn't like the food or that the environment would be intimidating.

Here is my suggestion: maybe consider Remy brunch? Not only would it be less expensive (not that this seems to be an issue for you), but it could give you a taste of the Remy food/experience with less of a time commitment, and less of the nighttime formality. If you go and find that the food is definitely not for you, well, then you'd know for sure! But if you find that the food and presentation is a good experience, you might want to later try the dinner.

Cruises can be a great opportunity to try out new things that you would not otherwise do, so it is something to consider. That said, I am quite sure you can live a happy and fulfilled life without ever setting foot in Remy, and if it isn't for you or if you don't feel like trying it out, I don't think you should feel bad about that. As my mom says, we all have different tastes, and that is why Baskin Robbins makes 31 flavors!

Whatever you choose, have a great cruise.

Skip it. It's a wonderful experience, for some a once in a lifetime opportunity in the sense of something to try without going WAY out of ones way to try it obce, but I am of the "if you have to talk yourself into it, skip it". Just my 0.02

LOL We do eat in and enjoy our time in the MDR - but occasionally we just feel we would rather have a very low key evening.

On our May cruise we had both Palo brunch and dinner scheduled. We enjoyed brunch and it was nice to be able to have our now adult DDs experience it too. We had Palo dinner scheduled for pirate night our 4th night of our 5 night cruise. It was Nassau day and I came down with a bad migraine which I got rid of thanks to meds - but it may have played a part in our just wanting to chill that night. We cancelled Palo and ordered room service.

I know I want to do Palo brunch and probably dinner during our upcoming 7 night. Maybe doing Remy brunch and Palo dinner is the better choice - that way we get to experience every thing but it is a bit more relaxed so we can "get our feet wet"


I am sitting here chuckling because it seems like people are assuming we are McDonalds kinda people (ick).

I think it is more the fact that sometimes we just want the simplicity and quiet or room service while sitting on our verandah watching the ocean go by - something I can not do at home either.

I am still up in the air - and have a lot of time to decide. We can't book until March 3rd. So I will talk to the rest of the family and see how they feel about it.
