Waterproof Disposable Cameras For Castaway Cay

I've decided I'm going to sign up for snorkeling when I get to CC in January, and want to take pics. I played with the idea of getting a waterproof bag for my phone, but don't want to take the chance. Has anyone taken pics before with a waterproof disposable camera, and what ones did you like, and what ones did you not?

I know most of them are like 7 to 10 bucks but I would be willing to spend a little more for something that I would feel more confident would work.

I've always bought a Fuji disposable at WalMart before our cruises that involved water activities. I think they worked fine.

I agree. Fuji waterproof disposables at Walmart. Work really nicely, decent underwater photos.

Remember you need to have them developed, too.

Nikon has a really nice waterproof digital camera (Coolpix S30) that's on sale at Target for $99. Really nice for the price!

I just bought a waterproof, shockproof, etc. camera on clearance at Target for $99. You should check the clearances for a nicer one.

taken with a "water proof" disposable from Target - sold in a package of two for around $10, then processed at local CVS, and later scanned

Check Amazon. I have a waterproof digital Fuji that I spent about $150 on. It was $50 less at Amazon than Best Buy.

I use the disposable cameras a lot and they seem to take great pic's! REMEBER to get to the beach early as the water gets cloudy as more people arrive and when the water gets cloudy your pics won't turn out as well. Have fun!!!

Overstock has a underwater camera for $59.49. It might be a better deal then buying a Disposable Camera depending on the price of the disposable camera and film processing.

http://www.overstock.com/Electronics...7/product.html

Important Tip:

Waterproof cameras will get rusty if you leave it for a long time without care after using it in salt water.

After the camera is used in the sea, take the following care precautions to preserve the waterproof capability:
1. Immerse the camera in a bucket containing fresh water for about 10 minutes.
2. Dry the camera with a soft towel, and keep it in the shade with good ventilation

The disposables are good up to a point. We've stopped using them for pictures underwater--regardless of how sunny it is, we just end up with shot after shot of green-gray blobs.

Digital underwater cameras are THE way to go! The quality is soooo much better than the disposables and you can SEE that you got the shot right away. And you're not limited to only 24 exposures or whatever comes on the disposable. Then you can upload them along with all of your other pictures (no scanning after the fact). Most will also do underwater videos too. Very cool.

(By the time you buy the disposable and pay to get them developed you've spent 1/4 of the cost of buying a "real" underwater camera that is re-usable over & over & over.)

I got a waterproof camera at Target on clearance also. I bought mine when it was $119, Pentax regular $200 everywhere else. I decided it was worth the investment since I could use it on a lot of places I worry about my DSLR getting damaged. I would go that route if funds allow, you will get much better pictures. I seen a Nikon waterproof for $99 at Target also, it looked like a good camera.

I agree with OP and suggest you spend a bit more and get a waterproof, shockproof, etc digital camera. A decent Fuji Finepix XP will cost less than $100 and take great pics. I have gone both routes. The cost of disposeables can start to rack up with developing and digital CDs, etc. plus they can be difficult to see through, so you end up taking pics in the general area of what you intend to capture. Plus with the waterproof digital, you can use it as an all-around camera without worries. After a mid-vacation trip to Wal-Mart and spending way too much for a replacement point-and-shoot after my daughter dropped ours, I LOVE my little waterproof, shock-proof camera. It is definitely my go-to camera and takes great pics.

We found a Fuji Finepix XP on eBay for $85 basically for cruises! After three disposable cameras then it pays for itself. I have never managed to take decent snorkeling pics with a disposable, although I did get some good dolphin shots. So I guess it depends how many times you think you will use it.
