Working Moms

How much time did you take off from work after your first child?

4 weeks full time and another 4 weeks part-time, but my ex-husband was laid off a week before she was born and I was the higher wage earner. We decided that for us, it made more sense for him to stay home and for me to work. The time I had off was paid (combination of sick leave and vacation time).

With the first one no paid time off and I was off 6 weeks.

Second one no paid time off and I took a year off and went back part time.

With the 3rd one I was working full time and took 5 weeks off paid. All 3 were c-sections.

18 weeks with my first, 1 year with my second. For both, only the first 40 days were paid by using sick time/short term disability. I'm a teacher, so they did have to hold my position for the year, which was nice.

9 weeks 1st. (max pd)
16 weeks 2nd (all but 1.5 weeks pd.)

Both times I was physically ready to go back after about 4 weeks. I couldn't imagine sooner than that though.
There is only 1 thing I love more than holding my DD's hand.. It is holding her hand and watching her grow up. ... added a new DD for double the fun!

I took 8 weeks off paid and then 2 weeks unpaid, by then I was pulling my hair out being home and couldn't wait to get back out in the real world!

6 months of maternity leave for each of my children and then I re-arranged my schedule to spend less time in my office. For a long time after my first child, I worked M-Th, full days, with Fridays off or only for a few hours. Now I work M-F but only from 8:15 until 2:45 with no lunch so I can take and pick my daughter up from school, although sometimes my husband is able to pick her up from school (he works a rotating schedule). Occasionally things come up at work and I can't leave so my husband and I have a back up plan if that happens. I also sometimes bring work home that I do after our daughter goes to bed. It works for us.

I used my vacation and sick time and had 17 weeks paid with my first and 16 weeks paid with my second.

I started working part time after that.

I didn't have paid maternity leave with any of my 3 so I always took as little as possible and just used vacation time to get paid for as much of it as possible. With my first, I took 6 weeks but once I was home from the hospital, I started doing some work from home as a deal with my boss to extend my time a little. My 2nd one was only 2 weeks because I had stuff I needed to get back for so I brought him with me as much as I could. My 3rd I took 6 weeks "off" but was working some during that time. I was in the office 1-2 times a week to pick up files, review things and the like and in court sometimes too. With what I do, I can't really take vacation time without checking in and taking off 6-8 weeks completely would not be possible. I always had my cell phone and lap top in the hospital with me and was already checking in with work within hours of having each baby.

I went back to work 6 weeks after each child. It is the maximum amount of time I received with disability. My pay was not full pay and we needed the income back to normal as soon as possible.

I must say though that DH was laid off the day my first one was born and he took his vacation time with the second until we had babysitting set up for both.

We did not do daycare because of personal choices.
