I agree with most of those already posted.

One that gets me every time (but I love it) is The Pogues' "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZqN1glz4JY

When I was a young man I carried my pack
And I lived the free life of a rover
From the Murrays green basin to the dusty outback
I waltzed my Matilda all over
Then in nineteen fifteen my country said Son
It's time to stop rambling 'cause there's work to be
done
So they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gun
And they sent me away to the war
And the band played Waltzing Matilda
As we sailed away from the quay
And amidst all the tears and the shouts and the
cheers
We sailed off to Gallipoli

How well I remember that terrible day
the blood stained the sand and the water
And how in that hell that they called Suvla Bay
We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter
Johnny Turk he was ready, he primed himself well
He us with bullets, he rained us with
shells
And in five minutes flat he'd blown us all to hell
Nearly blew us right back to Australia
But the band played Waltzing Matilda
As we stopped to bury our slain
And we buried ours and the Turks buried theirs
Then started all over again

Now those
In mad world of blood, death and fire
And for weeks I kept myself alive

Then a big Turkish shell knocked me **** over tit
And when I woke up in my hospital bed
And saw what it had done, I wished I was
dead
Never knew there were worse things than dying
no more I'll go waltzing Matilda
the green far and near
For to hump tent and pegs, a man needs two legs
No more waltzing Matilda for me

So they collected the cripples, the wounded
maimed
And they shipped us back home to Australia
, the blind insane
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla
And as our ship pulled into Circular Quay
I looked at the place where legs used to be
And thank Christ there was nobody waiting for me
To grieve and to mourn and to pity
And the band played Waltzing Matilda
As they carried us down the gangway
But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared
turned all their faces away

And now every April I sit on my porch
And I watch the parade pass before me
my old comrades, how proudly they march
Reliving dreams of past glory

The forgotten heroes a forgotten war
And the young people ask , "What are they
marching for?"
And I ask myself the same question
And the band plays Waltzing Matilda
And the old men answer to the call
But year after year their numbers get fewer
Some day no one will march there at all

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
Who'll a-waltzing Matilda with me?

Oh, and Bob Dylan's "I'll Remember You"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QE8qRiG46ks

I'll Remember You

I'll remember you
When I've forgotten all the rest
You to me were true
You to me were the best
When there is no more
You cut to the core
Quicker than anyone I knew
When I'm all alone
In the great unknown
I'll remember you.

I'll remember you
At the end of the trail
I had so much left to do
I had so little time to fail
There's some people that
You don't forget
Even though you've only seen'm
One time or two
When the roses fade
And I'm in the shade
I'll remember you.

Didn't I, didn't I try to love you ?
Didn't I, didn't I try to care ?
Didn't I sleep, didn't I weep beside you
With the rain blowing in your hair.

I'll remember you
When the wind blows through the piney wood
It was you who came right through
It was you who understood
Though I'd never say
That I done it the way
That you'd have liked me to
In the end
My dear sweet friend
I'll remember you.

Love the thread. Sorry I am a Barry Manilow, Billy Joel, Elton John type. EVERY child must take piano lessons! My kids hated me. Now I have a piano that I am hoping to give to grandkids. (This was all posted tongue in cheek). you cannot make them play piano but Good Lord learn to read music.
Worked for DD but the boys, not so much.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned what was one of the biggest chart topping tearjerkers of the 1970s:

You Left Me Just When I Needed You Most by Randy Vanwarmer. He wrote it in a hurry as a B side filler. The A side went nowhere but that "throwaway" number on the back went all the way to #4 on the Billboard 100 chart in December 1979.

It's been covered dozens of times by other artists, but the original by Vanwarer is still the best:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dvt2Y...eature=related

You packed in the morning, I stared out the window
And I struggled for something to say
You left in the rain without closing the door
I didn't stand in your way.

But I miss you more than I missed you before
And now where I'll find comfort, God knows
'Cause you left me just when I needed you most
Left me just when I needed you most.

Now most every morning, I stare out the window
And I think about where you might be
I've written you letters that I'd like to send
If you would just send one to me.

'Cause I need you more than I needed before
And now where I'll find comfort, God knows
'Cause you left me just when I needed you most
Left me just when I needed you most.

You packed in the morning, I stared out the window
And I struggled for something to say
You left in the rain without closing the door
I didn't stand in your way.

Now I love you more than I loved you before
And now where I'll find comfort, God knows
'Cause you left me just when I needed you most
Oh yeah, you left me just when I needed you most
You left me just when I needed you most.

I can't believe I forgot the late, great Warren Zevon's "Keep Me in Your Heart."

Shadows are falling and I'm running out of breath
Keep me in your heart for awhile
If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less
Keep me in your heart for awhile

When you get up in the morning and you see that crazy sun
Keep me in your heart for awhile
There's a train leaving nightly called “when all is said and done”
Keep me in your heart for awhile

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for awhile
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for awhile

Sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house
Maybe you'll think of me and smile
You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on your blouse
Keep me in your heart for awhile

Hold me in your thoughts, take me to your dreams
Touch me as I fall into view
When the winter comes keep the fires lit
And I will be right next to you

Engine driver's headed north to Pleasant Stream
Keep me in your heart for awhile
These wheels keep turning but they're running out of steam
Keep me in your heart for awhile

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for awhile
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for awhile

Keep me in your heart for awhile

SO glad that someone mentioned "Vincent" Love, love, love that song! And it's my sisters favorite! If anyone's ever in Hilton Head and comes across Robert Ingman, he's usually at Marley`s ask him to play it, for Cindy & Lynn !!!!

Okay My choices are, another Christmas song "Pretty Paper" can't even listen to it, BTW it was written by Willie Nelson.

And my all time Favorite a song by Jimmie Buffet that most people have never even heard of: "California Promises" It's a beautiful song

Beneath the moonlit sky
Shadows walk beside the water
Sad goodbye whispered on the shore
Hear those wind chimes play
They serenade the shadow lovers
Ring and fade away
Like california promises

I will never love another
Wait for me, til I return
But she never will
He waits for her beside the water
Faithful still
To california promises

(guitar solo)

I will never love another
Wait for me, til I return
Though she never will
He waits for her beside the water
Faithful still
To california promises

(guitar solo)

- notes:
Guitar solo: earl klugh
Background vocals: rita coolidge, david lasley, arnold mcculler

CCR's Someday Never Comes:

First thing I remember, was asking Papa, "Why?"
For there were many things I didn't know.
And daddy always smiled and took me by the hand,
saying, "Some day, you'll understand."

CHORUS:
Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son,
That you better learn it fast, and you better learn it young,
'Cause someday never comes.

Well, time and tears went by, and I collected dust
For there were many things I didn't know.
When daddy went away, he said, "Try to be a man,
and someday, you'll understand."

CHORUS

And then one day in April, I wasn't even there
for there were many things I didn't know
A son was born to me, and Mama held his hand
Sayin', "Someday, you'll understand."

CHORUS

I think it was September, the year I went away,
For there were many things I didn't know
And still I see him standin', tryin' to be a man
And I said, "Someday, you'll understand."

CHORUS

(John Fogerty has said this song is autobiographical, which just makes it even sadder.)

Oh, and speaking of WW1, "No Man's Land" is another one that honors the dead of that era, but it's a bit of an anti-war anthem: http://ericbogle.net/lyrics/lyricspdf/nomansland.pdf
