HOLD THE PHONE!
I think it's easier to reason with a CHIMPANZEE than to reason with a tween/early teen!

I don't know if this qualifies as "Pop" but....

Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin.

Does "any song by Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, or any boy band" count?

Maybe "depressing" isn't the right word. How about nauseating?

Hands Down: Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot.

Comedian Richard Jeni once did a bit about if you're having a party & want people to go home, you play that song.

I had the auburn haired Chrissy doll whose hair grew. She lost most of it in an incense fire. Don't ask

Chrissie Hynde's version of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" makes me want to slit my wrists. The most depressing Christmas song ever......and that includes the one where the kid gets his dying mama some shoes.

Well, low-key wasn't entirely off with Elton John either. He had a song "Rocket Man" Similar idea to Major Tom. Catchy tune but if you really listened to the words and thought about what it meant it was also kind of depressing. Not as depressing as Major Tom, but still...

And speaking of Elton John, how about "Candle in the Wind"
Also, "If I Die Young" by Thompson Square
and
"One" by Metallica (any song based on Johnny Got His Gun is going to be depressing because that is one depressing novel.)

I've heard that same story attributed to many people, but whomever said it, it's true
