I love the kindle fire. If you're an Amazon prime member you get to borrow a book free every month and you get lots of free movies too.

The Kindle Fire DOES have parental controls and they work really well actually. My DD8 received a fire for her Bday. She has her own amazon account (which I got a lot of greif for on this site, but whatever.) I didn't want all of my stuff downloaded to her fire and vice versa and I wanted her to be able to have her own account with money in it to work with. It has worked great. I have to enter a password for her to purchase anything even free stuff. I also have to enter a password to turn on the wi-fi and give her internet access.

I have not had any issues with ads on the Fire. I guess some of the app I use have ads but that's b/c I choose to use the free apps. If you pay for an app, the ads go away.

The charger is a USB cable. If you have an USB adapter for a wall plug for any device, it'll work with the Kindle. (I use the one from my camera.)

I have not had any issues finding games I wanted to play either. There are a whole lot to chose from on the amazon market. A lot of free ones too. I have angry birds, fruit ninja, wheres my water, cut the rope, flow, to name a few. I have also downloaded several hundred books for free.

I have a kindle fire. I won't repeat what others have but wanted to add the fire uses a mini usb charger. One of my digital cameras uses the same thing as done my LG Virgin Mobile phone. I keep my phone charger plugged in all the time and charge all my devices from it. That also is nice because I can charge the fire in my car with the car charger.

I have an ipad. DS16 has the original Fire and DD9 and DS5 will be getting Fire's for Christmas. I think there is confusion on this thread with respect to ad's on the Fire. That is new to the most recent version so those with the original Fire cannot speak to their experience because there are none on the original unless they are within an app. There is also the option to pay an additional fee and turn them off. DD9 already has a regular Kindle with ad's and they are not intrusive at all.

I read reviews of the new Fire that said like the the Kindles with Ads, ads on the new Fires are nbd.

Nooks have virtually unlimited memory because they can take a microSD card. You can also easily root them via the card as well.

I have both a Nook color and the 1st gen Kindle Fire (which I won as a conference door prize.) In our family the Nook is preferred for all-around use. My kids don't read on the Fire; it's mostly used for games and short videos. My little one loves the Read-to-Me titles available for the Nook, as she cannot reliably read on her own yet.

You need to check and see if your local library offers this option. Some do not.

I'm going with the Nabi 2 for my 7 yr old DD - it is quite the powerful 7" tablet, and it has 2 modes "kid" and "parent" in parent it is a full blown android tablet with mini SD card, mini HDMI and 1Gb ram plus there are some smart people out there on the nabi forum with hints and instructions on getting the kindle app, google play, etc. I have researched & researched , and for ME, this is the best choice.

Good luck

My DH has a Nexus and he really really likes it. He gave up his Kindle Fire for it. He says it is exactly like his android phone, but a bigger screen. You use the Google Play store so you aren't limited to only what amazon offers, etc. I am seriously considering getting one, but am using DH's handed-down Fire for now.

I had a Nook Color but gave it up for a Kindle Fire. I did like reading better on the Nook, but that's about all. Unless you root it, the choices for apps/games is extremely limited and almost nothing was free (not even angry birds!)

I have to disagree with this statement. I think there is a huge difference in the various app stores. If you are comparing Google Play to iTunes then, yes, there is not much of a difference. However, if you get a Kindle Fire then you are restricted to the Amazon App Store (unless you unroot it). I have a Kindle Fire and I find the Amazon App Store to be lacking. For example, there are not many banking apps in the Amazon App Store. Many other apps that I have on my phone I can not put on my Fire because Amazon does not have them. A few have recently shown up but it seems to be slow. There is a plus side to this in that Amazon reviews the apps prior to putting them out there. This means the changes are better than you wouldn't inadvertently install a bad app with malware in it. Apps in Google Play aren't screened so there might be times when you don't know what you are installing.

Overall, for a kid this might not matter. For an adult who wants to purchase an Android based tablet I would recommend going through the Amazon App Store to see if you want is there prior to purchasing a Kindle Fire. Otherwise, I would go with a Nexus 7 from Google.

I just bought my 7 year old the Visual Land Android tablet from Walmart. It had good reviews, did all the things that he wanted (youtube, apps), and the price was right at 90$. I just couldn't see spending 500$ on an Ipad for a 7 year old. I hope it holds up and he likes it.
