It didn't stop there. Look at any study on the exponential growth of baseball salaries from 1980 to today and see where it all started. And I don't know what parks you're talking about, but to take a family of 4 to a game in Seattle (which certainly isn't a big market), you will spend about $500 when all is said and done for 1 game. Hardly a bargain.

Baseball is no longer "America's pastime." That is now football, which is also expensive to go watch. But you can almost forgive them, as they only have 8 home games to make their money.
....somehow I doubt if there are any baseball players that will fault Steinbrenner. In fact, many probably will PRAISE him for his ground-breaking influence on free agancy...

....let's face it - Steinbrenner was a shrewd businessman, plain-and-simple.

[BTW ~ Steinbrenner signed Dave Winfield to a 10-year, $23 million contract in 1985; Reggie Jackson got the $3 mil deal.....]

....again, all I ask is that you refrain from bashing a team and/or DIS member - there's enough negativity elsewhere, and it has no place here.

Where did I bash a team or a DIS member? I'm confused. I stated an opinion. If you don't share the same opinion, then you shouldn't care. I never called you gutless. I said it takes no guts to root for the Yankees. I'm not debating anymore. You stated the rules of the thread, I'm abiding by them.

....well, I certainly [and sincerely] appreciate that.....all this thread was meant to do was for baseball fans to give a shout-out to their beloved teams, is all.... and, as for calling Yankees fans 'gutless', well, then technically if a fan has 'no guts' to root for a team, go speed skating, start a water polo team, ski the Swiss Alps, or WHATEVER, that IS calling them 'gutless'.....the truth of the matter is, it DOES take guts to root for a team like the Yankees, when there are so many 'haters' there that lash out at a team and/or its fans or affiliates. So many times I've turned the other cheek, but when it goes 'overboard', welllllll.......

It's all good. And if I offended you, I apologize. I let my hatred of the Evil Empire to get the best of me sometimes. I just hate that other teams feel they have to spend a quadrillion dollars a year to keep up with them because they treat the rest of the MLB as their farm system.

If money bought championships they would win every year.
Dave Winfield didn't win a WS with the Yankees, so whatever money they spent on him didn't help win a championship..

I like them because they're my hometown team, (or close enough) and because my mom brought me up watching Yankee baseball.
In reality, isn't that the reason most people root for a team? Proximity and what your parents watched. Usually not much deeper than that. LOL that's why I never understand why people care about who likes what team. If I'd be born in Boston, I'm sure I'd be a Red Sox fan today.

I love the Yanks these years when they've been doing well, but I was loving them back in the 80s when they weren't winning anything.
Has nothing to do with rooting only for a winning team.

And what do you need guts for to like any sports team??
It seems to be over complicating things to take it so seriously.

....wuteva....don't you think that if other MLB owners had the resources to follow suit, they wouldn't be doing THE EXACT SAME THING AS THE Yankees??? PUL-leeez.

...and what most Yankee haters don't realize is the millions of $$ they put BACK into the team, employees, etc., not to mention the COUNTLESS gifts of charity that Steinbrenner has selflessly pooh-poohed taking credit for....

..thank you....well said. I love the Yankees because my dad was a big fan - I went to my first game when I was only 4 years old, back in the early 60's.....yeah, I'm THAT old!

GO YANKEES! Mo and Grandy are my favorites! Yes, we have been to quite a few games. I married a Yankee fan so I've been a fan since 1994.
