When does school start back in your area?

I live in Cobb County, GA where schools start mid-August. I live on the Cherokee County line and they start back at the beginning of August. Those starting back at the beginning are on what's called the "balanced calendar". They have fall break in Sept, Thanksgiving week, Xmas break, winter break in February, spring break in April, ending at the end of May.

Most of Cobb County wants this calendar but our school board keeps denying it. I think it's because we have two Six Flags parks in our county that would like for school to not start back until mid-September so that they can keep their employees and customers. It's irritating. I like all the breaks. It keeps kids sane.

However, b/c of the popularity of this new calendar, I've noticed that the Sept week is very busy in Florida, and so is the February break. Prices show it.

Just curious what your system has.

I am in Mass and almost all the schools here start just prior to or just after Labor Day and have the following breaks:

Thanksgiving (half day Wednesday, off Thursday and Friday)
Christmas (Dec 24-first school day after New Year's Day)
February vacation (third week in Feb.)
April vacation (third week in April)

School ends end of June.

We started 8.20 this year.

We have off a few Jewish holidays in my district (September but it changes), 3 days at Thanksgiving, 1 teacher work day in about 2 weeks, and 2 weeks at Christmas.

1 week for Spring Break and then school is out early June.

Some in our area do not like starting so early, but I'd rather start early in August than go thru June when it's not so hot. In Georgia, it's so hot in August that even being at the pool is unbearable. I'd rather my kid be in school and have off June when it's awesome outdoors.

We just moved to MN and have a kindergartener, so we're new to all this and thus I don't know what's "typical" but here's our schedule:

Schools don't start until after Labor Day.
There is a fall break mid-October. This is statewide due to a teacher conference that is held annually, but some schools only give a couple days, while others give the entire week.
School is off the entire week of Thanksgiving.
There is a winter break that runs Christmas Eve-January 2nd.
Two day early spring break the first week of March.
Full week long spring break the week after Easter.
One day off for Memorial Day.
Last day of school is June 6th.

They start here in the Dallas, TX area 8.27. They don't get a fall break. Only three days off at Thanksgiving and then a Christmas break of two weeks, then one week for Spring break and they are out at the end of May.

i think kids need a break between the beginning of school and Thanksgiving. So do teachers. That's a long stretch.

I'm in Cherokee and we love the calendar - we call the September break the 'Disney break' I remember a couple of years ago Cobb went onto ours and the parents loved it .... then they switched it back again even though the parents voted to keep the balanced calendar. That was odd and very un-democratic

ETA: we must be pretty close because I'm on the Cherokee/Cobb boarder also ....

Just out of curiosity, how many school days do you have in total?

I live in Quebec, Canada and my kids are back in school late August, we have a two week break at Xmas plus one week in March, and school continues until June 23rd.

In total we have 180 school days. Is it more or less in the US?

Yes, we had it for one year. It was awesome. They took a poll of the parents and teachers and an overwhelming 70+% wanted to keep the balanced calendar. Our stupid school board went against the wishes, claimed the poll was bogus and refused. It has been a MAJOR issue ever since with loss of trust in our school board. We now have a calendar committee that was appointed by our new superintendent and a few others, but still.. the final vote is left up to the school board. It's already been voted down more than a handful of times over and over against the parent/teacher wishes. I wish I could prove that Six Flags has this school board in their pocket. Nothing else makes sense. The haters from the MDJ call us the Mickey Mouse Gang. I didn't even come to Disney when we had our breaks that one year. We did go places, but it wasn't to Disney.

The whole thing is so crooked.

In Texas, it is law that public schools can't start before the 4th Monday...so they all start the 4th Monday.

Also in Texas public schools go 177 days.

Our typical schedule in our district is
-Start 4th Monday
-Off the week of Thanksgiving
-Off 2 weeks at Christmas
-Off a week in March for Spring Break
-Out before June 1.

There are typically a few long weekends. This year it's Easter and Memorial Day.

we live in NJ. Most schools start back the week of labor day, or right after. They end around the last 2 weeks in June. We also have a week in November (called Jersey weeek in Disney), where many schools have off part or all of the week, and New Jerseyans flock to Disney in droves!
