DISigners, I need constructive feedback

I am not sure if this is where I am supposed to post this question. I originally posted it in DDA Chapter 27, but I didn't see a lot of requests like this. If there is a thread, please let me know.

You should know, I am a huge fan of constructive criticism. I want to eventually make fantastic DISigns, so please help me improve.

I downloaded GIMP and thought I would try DISigning. This is my first DISign. I don't think it looks "complete". Does anyone have any suggestions? I particularly don't like the background color. Does anyone have suggestions for choosing a background for DISigns in general?

GIMP is supposed to be similar to Photoshop. Once I completed this, is there a way to just edit the name, or do I have to start from scratch with each name? What do photoshop-people do?

Thank you for your help,
Dee

Does GIMP use layers? I personally don't enjoy doing name fills but when I do I try to set up so that it can be used for a different name.

you might add a background...stars, sparkles or something so the background isn't a solid color.....I like it as is though!!

GIMP does use layers. I think I agree with you, I am not sure about name fills. I am still trying to figure out the GIMP program and thought name fills might be a good start.

Thank you for the background suggestion. I think that would definitely help.

I agree with Marion about adding some sparkles or stars to the background. I would have chosen a less playful font for a subject matter like Cinderella. A serif font like this one. I also would not have used black for the out line but instead used a dark blue.

You're off to a good start!

Thanks, I just downloaded the font.
I didn't even think to use any other color than black to outline. Thanks!

Here is another attempt with the suggestions y'all made. Since I am still learning, I am not saving the "layered" versions. Therefore, I can't go back and make quick changes.

I would love more constructive criticism so I can improve.
Thanks,
Dee

The drop shadow on the inside of the letters bothers me. I'd rather see it on the outside. Other than that it looks good.

Not sure why you're not saving the layered version. It makes it easier to go back and make changes to it like a different name. It also helps you to figure out how you did something.

It took way too long for me to figure out how to put the shadow on the outside of the letters.

Is this large enough? Should the borders be thicker? This one seems too plain to me. Stars didn't seem appropriate for Robin Hood. I need to download some paintbrush options.

Dom, I am not saving them, because I have never used a designing/layering program before. The repetition is helping me remember how to create the name fills. These are also just practices to help me learn how to design something worth designing.

I like that one. Maybe a leafier background would help to take away some of the plainness that's bothering you? It's not bothering me. I think it's good and really would be careful adding too much might over do it. I've often found the mark of a true artist is to know when enough is enough.

If you were using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements I could explain how to do things or point you in the direction of some tutorials. I'm not familiar with Gimp so I can't help there.
