Question about use year

This may be a silly question but...
We are planning on buying a resale in the immediate future but we are taking our time researching making sure we are well informed before purchase. One little detail has me tripped up- If the intention is for us to use the points in Aug and our use year month is one of the months following within the same year (sept oct nov dec) would we be borrowing points for that same year for our Aug trip? Does that make sense?

Sep, Oct, Nov, & Dec UYs cover a one year period (IE: Sep 1, 2013 to Aug 31, 2014). So if you travel Aug 1 - 7, 2014 you would be using your 2013 UY points.
It is recommend that you get a UY in which you travel early in the UY. For normal travel in Aug a Mar, Apr, May, or Jun UY is recommended. That way if you have to cancel your Aug trip for some reason you can reschedule the trip within that UY or bank the points into next UY.
Say you have an Apr UY the points are good from Apr 1, 2014 - Mar 30, 2015, you can book a stay for Aug 1 - 7, 2014 as early as Sept 1, 2013 using your 2014 Apr UY points. Say you have to cancel your trip before July 1, 2014 the points will still be available with no restrictions to bank into your 2015 UY by Nov 30, 2014. If you cancel after July 1, 2014 they will go into holding and have to be used before the end of the 2014 UY.

It doesn't matter what your UY is as to when you can book your stay. You just need to have the points available to book it.

So you can book that August stay in Sept even if you don't have a Sept UY. You could book it with any UY. But one that falls prior to your trip means you might be able to rebook or bank those points if you can to cancel the trip.

UY is just added insurance in case you need to cancel and bank your points to save them.

You have 8 months from the start of your UY to bank your points, points not used or banked prior to the end of your UY are forfeited.

We have used our correct UY twice to save our points over the years due to vacation cancellations beyond our control.

that's right.

if you want to stay in aug 2014 with a sept UY, that stay takes place in your 2013 UY (which runs from sept 1, 2013 to aug 31, 2014) so you would have access to those current points from the 2013 UY plus banked 2012 pts plus borrowed sept 2014 pts if you needed them. (booking a stay has nothing to do with UY so you could have booked at 11 months out even if you had run out of banked or current pts.)

for an aug 2014 stay with an aug UY, you would have access to current 2014 UY pts plus banked 2013 UY pts plus borrowed 2015 UY pts. in both cases, you would have access to up to 3 UYs worth of pts...but you might have to throw out the calendar and just look at your 12 month UY to figure out which 3 years it is...

an aug UY is ideal for august stays. as the others have said, if you need to cancel, it would give you more options. but UY mostly becomes an issue only if you need to cancel.
