Besides WDW where does your family vacation?

Where do you go on vacation when you are not headed to WDW? [I know, I know...no one on the dis thought there WAS another place to go on vaca]This will be our 2nd year in a row going to WDW & we are planning a less expensive vaca for 2013. Don't worry we'll be back in 2014. Thought I would ask here on the Dis as we might have similar tastes in vacations. We are in Pa& want to drive no more than 12 hours. So, if you are interested in giving your ideas, thank you.

We currently are living in Alaska (thanks to the military). We have local trips planned for next summer. Mostly camping probably to Seward, Denali and Homer.

When my husband was stationed in Italy we took them to Rome, Venice, Munich, Slovenia, Verona and numerous other places within four hours or so.

We've driven to Washington DC with them and also did a cross country road trip when we moved up to Alaska. We've cruised a lot too but have yet to take the kids.

We went to Boston at one point and had a lot of fun there too.

We're the same way, we were military and we've taken trips to nearby states or just within our current state and cross country.

From Pennsylvania you could go to Niagra Falls or if you like amusement parks/roller coasters you could go to Ohio and do Cedar Point and other things there.

I've always wanted to go to Boston or Washington D.C., but we haven't yet, I'm waiting until my youngest is a little older. I don't know how far it is from you, but we went to Richmond, VA this summer to go to Kings Dominion and there is a lot of history in that area as well, we visited quite a few sites in one day. Williamsburg has a lot to do, too.

We love Lake Hope in Ohio, and Blackwater Falls in WV, and Washington D.C.

DVC Vero Beach, DVC HHI, & DCL Dream! My DH prefers Disney. We have went to Panama City Beach but prefer not to repeat it. We have hung out in Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Mammoth Cave, Pigeon Forge/ Gatlinburg, Nashville, and so on..... Next year I am going w/ my 5th grader on a school trip to D.C.

We're military too, so our last family vacation was a house rental on the beach in the Philippines.

Once we get back to the States we'll likely do Disney, then go somewhere else.
From PA, I'd probably do a train/driving trip around New England with stops at various historical sites. I'm not sure that would be less expensive though, just alternative.
At some point, I'd really like to spend some time at Colonial Williamsburg.

Being in Michigan, we make the short drive to Mackinaw City almost every year. We spend one day in town, a day on the island, and usually drive to the UP on another day. It is so beautiful and peaceful in the UP!

We have also made the trip to Pigeon Forge Tennessee a few times. Again, very beautiful. And if you like mini golf, there are many many places to have a game. And while Dollywood is no WDW it is still pretty fun.

I have always wanted to go to Mackinaw City, but being from NJ I doubt that will happen soon.

I live in NC so of course I have to suggest beaches in NC! We normally go to a beach for a few days in the summer. So far we've seen Wrightsville, Oak Island, Atlantic, Carolina Beach and Myrtle (in SC). I hear Charleston SC is amazing and that is on our list. Also Hilton Head is great if you play tennis or golf. We spend a lot of time at Busch Gardens in Virginia. They have something for everyone in the family.

We are also in Pa. Our other favorite vacation is to cruise. We go out of NJ so there's no airfare and going after Thanksgiving before Christmas is one of the cheapest times to cruise. We homeschool so we can vacation whenever. Some other ideas are to take a trip to NYC, Washington DC, OBX in September....good luck deciding.

This. I live in NJ and we love Williamsburg. It can take less than 5 hours from southern NJ if the 95's are clear (95, 295, 495, etc) . We also go to the Poconos.

I second the beaches of the Carolinas (from the quiet/non-commercial/beautiful Outer Banks, Topsail Island, Emerald Isle to the overdone Myrtle Beach area). We LOVE Hatteras Island on the Outer Banks.

Also, Charleston, SC, Blue Ridge, GA, Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge,TN, Williamsburg/VA Beach, VA, Savannah, GA, etc.

DH and I were also frequent visitors to Vegas (2 -3 X per year in the past). Although, my DD (9 mo) has put a stop to that!!

New England

We live in RI, so; Cape Cod, New Hampshire, Maine, New York, Washington DC. We also do a lot of day trips and short overnight.
Orlando, non Disney trip. My daughter and her family live in Longwood. We are currently planning a road trip for Thanksgiving with a side trip to Charleston on the way.

Outer Banks (specifically, Corolla, NC).

The Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence River.

Camp at a local state park.

Beaches on the Atlantic coast.

We're planning a cross country road trip next year.
