Major/serious garage sale help needed
We are finally making the big move to FLA. cannt wait. We are selling all and I need any and all help. My biggest problem is our first day was great, but how do you get more customers in? repeats or new one.
We have about 6 wks. should we have moving sales daily or weekly? We are bringing out what we can as we no longer need it or what we feel we can live with out. I need to make as much as we can please any and all is so very much needed, Asap would be great.

DH and I go to Auctions and resale quite a bit of stuff. We have hard sales on Saturdays and I take stuff to the flea market. You can run an ad in the newspaper and Craigslist.

Start listing bigger ticket items on craigslist and you can bundle a bunch of smaller items. Take CLEAR photos and list a general section of town you live in. I live in Houston, TX and I loathe when people just list "Houston" as their location. Houston is nearly 40 miles across! If I am shopping on CL then I am going to have to go phsyically pick up the item and want to know whether you are 5 miles or 50.
I usually list a few landmarks etc: In the ad I might state: NW Houston, near Willowbrook, near intersection of Hwy 249 & Louetta, Champion Forest Subdivision and Spring/Tomball. By listing key areas near me people know if it is an area they want to travel. Also if you have many things for sale, list each item with a clear distinct title. Very annoying when someone just list "Apartment contents for sale" and then it is a general picture of their living room with the hubby sprawled on the couch. If selling several living room items, list each separately, but also at the end of your ad say something like "Also selling 2 lamps, 1 coffee table and 8x10 oriental area rug." Be realistic with your prices. You say you have 6 weeks to get rid of stuff. We don't care that the oak dining set cost you $800 in 1989. It is now used, scuffed and probably not in style, so price accordingly. Purge, purge, purge! Moving across the country is expensive, especially if you will be hiring movers to transport the boxes. I packed all my own boxes and hired movers and a good estimate that the estimator gave me was it is about $30 per box to move, so everytime I packed a box I thought about whether contents were worth that and whether I wanted/needed it at my old place. If you are looking to make the most money then having a garage sale isn't probably the best option since garage sale shoppers are looking for dirt cheap bargains. |

Our town has a 2 a year limit. Thursdays are the big garage sale day here, a little on Friday and Sat not much at all. Furniture and larger items you could try on Craigslist, before your sale to see if it sells that way, you may get more for it.

1) It is too late, but you should have done an auction.
2) We did one, and made more than $11,000. 3) MUCH. MUCH more than trying to do a garage sale. 4) I would call and auctioneer and see if he wants the rest. 5) He might be able to set it up in time. |

Start taking your good stuff to consignment stores in the area! Drop it off, ask them to send you a check at your new address, and focus on more important things - like many trips to wdw you'll take next year :D

Have your sale at the first of the month, right after pay day.
After noon on Sat. mark everything half off, tell your early birds you will be doing that and they may come back. If you have already had one at your house, ask a friend who has a better location to have it at their house. Good Luck!

Post a new ad on Craigslist for every day you have a sale. List what you are selling. ie: Kids toys, baby furniture, kitchen dishes....
Make a seperate listing for any big ticket items you are selling: bedroom set, kitchen table, swing set... Put these ads on Craigs list so they run the same time as your garage sale. This is a great way to bring in extra customers to your sale.

On facebook, a lot of people are selling under their county wide "online garage sale"....
They post a pic, post a price... Is there something like that in your area? I would spread the garage sale word via facebook too.... |
