Rumors are that the iPad Mini (a 7" screen version) will be announced in mid-October, at a $250-300 price point. You may want to hold off buying anything for a few weeks to see if that happens.

I work with iTunes. So I always make sure that people realize how iTunes works and helps to save space on your device.
You can uninstall any games or music or movies you are not into at this moment, but they are saved on iTunes and can be added back whenever you want. You do not need to spend the money on tons of memory. Just check and uncheck the items you want. It is so simple. The iPad 2 is great. I agree to avoid the iPad 1 as it will not update with the new IOS coming out. As for new iPad coming out in October, don't hold your breath. I am not seeing signs of that one. I do think we will see an upgrade of some sort next spring. Best of luck. |

Both my DS13 and DD11 have the I-pad 2 - 32GB. I have the same one as well. I basically use mine for internet/email. Kids use theirs for a lot more. They are great for vacations - we would rent movies for plane rides. Only problem was that DH wanted to watch movies too, so we all shared. I have been looking at the Apple website for a good deal so I can get a refurbished one for DH for Christmas. The items they have change constantly. Today I was able to get the I-pad 2 with 16 GB (don't think DH will download music or lots of apps on there) for $319 plus tax. Shipping is free and it comes with 1 year warranty. I saw this on there a week or so ago and when I went to order it was "out of stock'. So, I kept stalking the Apple Website until it came back. Very excited. Think this is a great deal.

I suggest going with 64g. It'll last longer and he won't have to fiddle with itunes as much (why I quoted the below post - it is an option if you're really trying to save $$, but it's annoying).
I have 16g and I find myself OFTEN having to delete/re-add certain apps/songs/whatever and it's a pain. And there's NO WAY I could fit a movie on there now. Quote:

I also recommend going with an iPad 2. Someone recommended the new Kindle Fire. It isn't close to an iPad. I also wouldn't be interested in the iPad Mini, which is supposed to be announced in October.
You don't need 64 GB memory. I have 32 GB and that's plenty of room for apps, lots of music as well as a number of movies. Remember, lots of things can be stored in the cloud and it's easy to remove and reload stuff on your iPad. Don't waste money buying memory you don't need. |

My DS also saved his own money to purchase his iPad. He bought a brand new one last summer. He bought the iPad 2 (whichever the cheapest model was). He uses it for all the things you posted. I made a deal with him that if he saved the money and purchased it himself, then we would buy the protective cover (we bought the otterbox, but my nephew has a trident cover which I think I'd prefer).

We got our grandson the Griffin Survivor case for his iPad 2. Wanted the otterbox but at that time(last Christmas) it didn't cover the screen like the iPhone cases do. I knew with a 4 year old we had to have that. Believe me it has been through a lot and still going strong.

We have an ipad2 and ipad3...we got the ipad 3 for the camera upgrade...it is noticably hotter and the screen improvements dont seem to matter for most things we do.
I would recommend the ipad2 32g refurb model from apple...but you might want to wait until the ipod mini announcement to see if the price drops! |

The release of an iPad mini will not affect the price of an iPad 2 or the new iPad. The mini is targeting a different set of customers.

I am actually really surprised with how much I like the new Kindle Fire HD. I own an iPad and the original Kindle Fire and I have to say that out of all 3 I think this new Fire is going to be my favorite.
The size is perfect for me (the iPad gets a bit heavy after a while) and the new design is really nice IMO (not a clunky as the original Fire and much closer to the lines of an iPad). The new screen is really nice and I like that I can watch HD movies now. I also like that you can stream movies from the cloud so I don't need as much storage as I did with my iPad. I just download 1 to 2 movies to watch while out of wifi range and the rest of the storage can be used for apps and games. A SD movie on the iPad takes up 1-2GB and an HD movie takes around 4GB, so it is nice to watch an HD movie without having to take up all the room. I'm looking forward to next month and checking out how well the new Kindle FreeTime thing works. The original Kindle Fire's parental controls were useless at best but it sounds like this new application will fix that. It is very Amazon centered, so if you and your child do not want to be purchasing Amazon content it probably isn't for you but as a person who already had a lot of Amazon content, it works great. |

if an iPod is 299 for 32gb and an iPad is 600$ for 32gb, I would think that the mini is aiming to be in e 400$ range...it will surprise me if the price below 300$.......the current price for an iPod2 refurb is also 400$....hard to imagine that it's really a different set of customers since most of them shop by price... |
