A question about naps...

DS has recently dropped naps at home but still falls asleep in the car if we're out around his previous naptime (1ish). He hasn't slept in the stroller in a while, but he did on last year's Disney vacation, which worked out nicely.

I NEED him to take a nap one of the days of our trip (when we'll be at AK in the morning and MNSSHP at night). Any ideas for keeping him awake in the car but getting him to sleep in the room?? We'll be at RD that morning and we'd like to be able to stay as late as possible at the party, though we might not make it. DH and I are old fogies who often go to bed at 8 or 9 just because we can, when we can. And even when we know we'll get to sleep in or rest the next day, we are usually in bed no later than 10:30... so WE need naps before that party!

We tried to go back to the room once for naps. It didn't work out so well. From that point on, we'd find a quiet spot in the park and walk DD around in the stroller until she dozed off. We have a Rayshade canopy cover which can be pulled down all the way over the stroller and that helped block out the light & some noise. Our favorite quiet spot in AK is just outside of the baby care center.

My daughter gave up naps other than the car too, but there is no way I'd get to her nap in a hotel room now. Just wouldn't happen. If you can't do it at home, I wouldn't expect it to happen that day on the trip. If the car works, I'd drive him around till he falls asleep, then chill in the car. Or try the stroller. My youngest will nap in the stroller in WDW, or the car, but wants nothing to do with it in the room.

But then *I* don't get a nap.

We aren't going to be a regular hotel, we'll be in a 2 bedroom condo... Maybe one of us can lay down with him and "watch a movie" while the other sleeps in the other room.. which should result in EVERYONE getting a nap... Maybe??

in similar sitution, we'd go for a drive, when he'd fall asleep we'd pull into a park somewher in the shade and we'd all snooze...it was awesome!!

I wouldn't bank on it unless that happens at home. I'd follow the above advice and all sleep in the car if you need to.

I bet you can make it work if you can keep him awake to you get back to the resort. When we need to nap on vacation, we ALL nap. TV off, lights off, air cranked up if its summer....do not disturb sign out! He will be so tired from a am in the parks he will fall asleep. I mostly nap too but after our DS5 is asleep, DS20 and DH will get up and go on the computer or leave the room. Maybe when you leave AK, buy his a simple fun new toy that will keep him busy on the way back or a snack to eat in the car.

Our DD is 2.5 and sometimes refuses naps. But when in Disney, she is so worn out, she will just fall asleep in the stroller. If you know your little one won't nap in the room - I wouldn't push it. Just try and find a nice, quiet cool place to nap in the stroller. Usually when DD is tired, we will just push her around and then she will pass right out and we will grab a drink/coffee and just go sit somewhere and enjoy. Usually she will get a good 1-2 hour nap and we are good to go!

I am thinking about this too. We thought about trying to go back to the room but I am worried it will be too much "work". Our 4 year old only falls asleep late in the day when we are in the car or something when he gets wore out. The only day I am worried about is the Saturday we are going to MK. We will be out late bc of the parades and wishes and things and I dont want to have a bad time bc of tired kids. I think our youngest can just sleep in stroller.

been there, done that many times. We would take a drive around the WDW area, maybe run to Target and one of us would run in while the other stayed with a sleeping baby.

I would just drive, you will drive yourself crazy in the room.

My son is 6 but on our last years trip to disney he knew that naps were in the "no option" catagory for him when we were going to be out late (meaning he had no option but to nap). He knew that when we got back to our room around 1:00 that we were closing the blinds and he had to lay down for 45 min. No tv or ipod. I turn on the "rain" white noise ap on my phone and set it for 45 min. and he lays down with me. Within 10 min. he is asleep (and so am I). I taught school for many years and even when parents would tell me that their child would never nap at home they always napped for me at nap time. I would just say "you must lay down and be still and quiet for 30 min. You don't have to sleep but you must lay down". Within 10 min. all the kids would always be asleep. Good luck, kids get so tired at the parks they usually fall asleep easily. Have a great trip

My kids cannot nap, not even at Disney whether back in the rooms or in a stroller. They dropped their naps by 2 and it was impossible. Even with me lying with them. Even if I lied down with them for a full hour! So, we made our plans accordingly. However, they weren't capable of falling asleep in the car either. So, I'd go with the plan for a car nap if you need your child to nap. If YOU need to nap and think you can get your child to nap at the hotel, then I'd sit next to him in the car and play with him. If you need your nap and you don't think your child will nap, perhaps you and your hubby can split the time with the child while the other gets half the time for a nap in the room.

*As a young child, I remember having to nap in preschool and it wasn't physically possible. I'd have to do fake sleeping or I would get into trouble. I absolutely hated fake sleeping but I didn't want to get into trouble. So, I suppose it's payback!

i got DD (at age 7) and DS (at almost 5) to take a nap one year by doing this. we went back to the room and we all lay down (including me). i didn't let them talk or play. i told them they didn't have to sleep, but they did need to rest. we all fell asleep.

I have been thinking about this too. Both kids will still nap if they are tired enough. We will have our car with us and I think that is where will wind up. Some great tips on how to keep them awake if we decide to go back to the room.

Drive around in the car like PP's said. Once asleep, pull over and park and let everyone rest
