That's the crux of the matter here. His office recording referred us to his cell phone number. That's the number we tried repeatedly and left several messages on. That's why I'm so upset. If he had his cell phone with him, he was deliberately ignoring our calls. If he didn't have his cell phone with him, he was leaving his patients stranded if an emergency came up, which it did.

Since you like him and like his work, I would give him another chance. Also, it would be a pain to swith orthodontists after you've already paid the bill!
But...I would definately expect him to pay the bill for the emergency visit.

Around here, you sign a contract for the entire treatment amount with the orthodontist before they begin your work. I would assume one would be on the line for the contracted amount. In this case, I would be afraid they would have me over a barrel. Interested to see how this turns out. Crappy service, IMHO.

Glad it worked out.

If you like the ortho - I would ask for an explanation on what to do if there is an emergency in the future. I think you handled it perfectly - with the emergency dentist.

DD had a quad-helix when she was 3 - and we had issues beyond issues with that staying cemented on. The dental practice was tied to a Children's Hospital, and there was always someone on call - and we used that often!

When DD got braces (two phases of treatment) the only issues we had were the occasional loose bracket - which are not emergencies.

Update: We spoke to the Orthodontist today. He was apologetic and embarrassed how this turned out. He said he did have someone on call over the weekend while he went camping. Unfortunately his receptionist gave the wrong number to contact in case of emergency. So I guess we'll stay with him.

Thanks for all the advice here.
