Lots of great updates. I'm glad you were able to get in for your Anniversary dinner even though the ADR was for the next night.

Cars Land at night looks so neat! Love all the neon. Looks like they really did an amazing job and took care of all the little details.

Glad you were able to get on the red trolley!

And, glad you were able to see WOC several times over the course of the trip.

More beautiful pictures. Can I borrow your DH for a night time / dark ride photography lesson? I'm getting better, but I'm not that good for sure.

I do not do well in the last car of any ride and I often find myself asking not to be put there. Too much bouncy and jerking is no fun.

I will definitely be using your TR as a guide when/if I ever plan to DL. It is really informative.

I'm back and caught up! I'm so jealous that you've seen WoC three times, I'm just dying to see that show!

I'm also sorry you felt sick during the day, but awesome that a nap was all you needed to feel better, I'm glad you still got on Grizzly River run. I pretty much hate rides like that, so you wouldn't catch me dead on that ride without a full change of clothes!

Looking forward to your last day!

I started this year taking Dramamine/Bonine as a preventative to getting sick. I generally am not bothered by roller coasters, but I've noticed the older I get, the most sensative I get to motion sickness. Now as I approach middle-age, I am willing to take the drugs needed to keep riding my favorite rides!

At least a little rest allowed you to fully recover.

I agree that Mater's JJ is an awesome little C-ticket ride. The combination of the tea-cup with the less-traditional "Whip" ride was well made. Certainly WAY more fun than Luigi's...I hope if they bring Carsland to DHS they leave Luigi's behind and put something more "fun" in it's place!

I can't believe your TR is almost over. So short, but still must have been a wonderful getaway.

SP
I'm not sure what the deal was with getting sick on the rides! I have always taken the less drowsy Dramamine on vacation and never really had a problem, but this time it was just getting to me. Too much at once, I guess.

I agree, I would not mind seeing MJJ or something similar if Cars Land came to WDW, but Luigi's can stay behind in California!!

I know, it does seem so short. The last day can be finished in a post or two. It was a really short trip, but such a fun weekend and a nice getaway just the two of us.

I was so relieved they were able to seat us that night despite the mix up with the reservation times! I guess it helps that we are early eaters so we were there fairly early in the evening.

Cars Land was so cool at night! You think it looks amazing in the morning, but then when you see it all lit up at night, it's ten times better. It all felt so real, like Radiator Springs had jumped out of the movie and into the theme park.

Riding the trolley and seeing WoC twice were two of the highlights of this trip, for sure.

I'm sure he would be thrilled!! He loves playing around with that camera until he gets the setting juuuuust right, especially in the dark.

Yeah, the last car twice in a row was a baaaad idea! If we are ever in DL again, I will make SURE to ask not to be put in the last row of Matterhorn. It was actually painful in that seat!

Thanks for the compliment. I know most people reading are people who mostly visit WDW, so I figure it's a good idea to include as much information as possible when writing these DL TRs.

Hopefully you will get to see it one day soon. Every Disney fan needs to see it! Being able to view it twice in one trip was so amazing, I only wish we could have been able to see it just ONE MORE TIME!

That has always been our attitude towards those kind of rapids rides that leave you soaked to the bone, but we really wanted to give it a try. The dress I was wearing dried quickly, but I sure wish I would have brought a dry pair of undies for afterwards!!

Day 4 Part 1: Early EARLY Start!

This is all going to be one huge update because we are leaving for our WDW trip on Saturday & I really need to finish this up before we go and my week is super busy from here on out. So get ready, here is ALL of Day 4!

DAY 4: Monday August 27th

It was already here, our last day in California! How quickly a long weekend goes by, am I right? We started off bright and early, getting up at 6 am so we could finish packing and check out at 6:30. We had one more AP Early Entry morning to make! By the time we got to the car, we were rushing a bit because we were running behind schedule. We got to the parking garage hoping we would make it into the park on time for opening only to find, the parking garage was not open yet. WHAT?! I was getting a little panicked, wondering why the garage was not opening until 7 am when we were supposed to be getting into DL at 7 am for EE! But then...I pulled up my email confirmation on my phone and realized EE wasn't until 8 am. Doh! Yet another instance of my incorrect timing, but thankfully, it was also the last!

So we took our time getting over to the park, all the while worrying a little about Tropical Storm Isaac brewing in the Gulf. We had been paying attention to it all weekend, but now it was starting to get worrisome. I talked to my mom about what they were going to do, because there were discussions about them evacuating and taking Paxton with them, but since it was moving slow and not expected to make landfall before we got back and were able to pick him up, they decided to stay put.

Anyway, now we were faced with lots of time to kill before the park opened. We contemplated getting breakfast at La Brea Express, but after going in and looking over the menu, we just weren't thrilled with the options. I wanted a hot breakfast, not a muffin.

We went to get in line at the turnstiles and were the second group at one of the turnstiles to the far right. This worked to our advantage because even before the gates officially opened, the CM's started scanning the tickets of the first few guests so that we could go right through when they opened!

Finally, at 8 am exactly, they let us into the park.

Our first destination of the day was, where else, Space Mountain!

I made DH take a picture of the empty loading dock to remember that we were on the very first ride of the day! It was pretty cool walking right up to a car without a wait. We haven't been able to walk right up to the big kid rides first thing in the morning in a long time it seems like!!

Next up, we decided to stick around Tomorrowland and check out Star Tours again.

It was fun, yet again, and I even got a new-for-me scene when we went to Coruscant. But by now, I think I have seen every scene, so the only difference in the rides now will be what combination I get. Still pretty fun not know what you're going to get though!

Since we were not worried about rushing around this morning, we stopped for breakfast after that at Tomorrowland Terrace. We got the breakfast platter that came with a biscuit, eggs, bacon, and potatoes, and we also got a French toast plate with bacon and fruit and split everything. It was good, especially considering we never really do that on our Disney trips. We either eat stuff in the room or we have a TS breakfast planned.

Next, we decided to walk over to Matterhorn, despite our less than ideal experience the day before.

I guess DH liked this sign?

The ride was still walk on, so we went to the left track. We took pictures of each other on the ride while waiting to take off.

Since the ride still didn't have a line, we walked through the queue again and rode the right track. This time we had the CM take a picture of both of us. What, you don't do random photo shoots on the Matterhorn??

Our conclusion after riding both sides back to back? The left side was super rough and the right side was slightly less rough. lol

Just before leaving for our trip, we had sat down with Paxton to watch Pinocchio. Of course, by the end, DH and I were the only ones watching, but anyway, it made me want to ride the Pinocchio ride since it does not exist at WDW. Of course, if there was no wait anywhere else, there DEFINITELY wasn't one here!

I tried to get DH to bite and wait for this with me, but he refused. lol

I guess I will just have to wait to meet Rapunzel in WDW!

Now if you remember from the day before, we had plans to hit the two big water rides in each park, Grizzly River Run in DCA and Splash Mountain in DL, back to back before heading back to the park for our break in case we were sopping wet. But then I started feeling bad, and we only ended up being able to ride GRR that evening. We discussed it and decided to take the plunge (literally) and ride Splash Mountain!

A few pictures on the way over to Critter Country...

Big Thunder Mountain

Pirate band outside POTC

Haunted Mansion closed that morning to get their Holiday overlay. Really hope to see that in person someday!

Finally, we made it over to our destination.

Splash Mountain!

Now, this is my all time favorite attraction in WDW, hands down, no questions about it. So I was eager to compare the two, since I had read before they were different. We boarded our log (which I already was not crazy about the seats being single seats instead of double!) and the differences were apparent almost immediately. A LOT of the scenes were different, the most disturbing of which was the final scene before the big plunge when there is a bunny singing about how B'rer Rabbit is going to die. It was a little freaky! Overall, I wasn't too impressed with DL's version of Splash Mountain. I will happily take my WDW version any day of the week! It's longer, I like the scenes there better, and I think the one in DL is missing one of the little drops, but I could be wrong.

Luckily, we did not get very wet since we really wouldn't be able to change clothes easily if we got soaked.

We decided to try out Indiana Jones before the lines started picking up, and we took the way through New Orleans Square, one of my favorite parts of DL.

Day 4 Part 2: Official Wait Timer

DAY 4 Continued: Monday August 27th

We made it over to Adventureland and found a 10 minute wait posted for Indiana Jones, so we hopped in line.

I was really excited when the CM handed me one of the red wait time tags! No clue why, I just think it's fun! lol We were able to take our time going through the queue and taking pictures because there was no one behind us.

Official Wait Timer in action!

We were able to ride in the first row because there was hardly anyone getting on and DH was very excited to get the "driver's seat." I tried in vain to get a picture of him holding the steering wheel, but I was too close and it was too dark.

After zooming through Indiana Jones, we decided to go ride Pirates of the Caribbean one more time. No wait again there, so we went over to Big Thunder Mountain next and again, no wait! I don't know if it was a slow day or the Early Entry was really that beneficial, but we did all of the headliners plus a few other attractions all before 10:30 am!

Last trip, we had decided to skip Snow White's Scary Adventure even though it was going away at WDW. We decided to ride it this time, although I expected it to be just like the one in WDW. However, a few of the scenes were different, so that made it even more enjoyable than I had expected it to be. The ride building and queue is much cooler looking that its old WDW counterpart too.

And just because it no longer exists at WDW, not because I especially enjoyed it our last DL trip, we decided to ride Mr. Toad's Wild Ride with no wait as well.

We contemplated riding Peter Pan's Flight, but the wait time was already up to 30 minutes and we hadn't waited that long for any of the headliners yet, so a 30 minute line might as well have been 3 hours! Instead, we went over to It's a Small World for one last trip around the world.

Day 4 Part 3: A Not So Perfect Ending

DAY 4 Continued: Monday August 27th

We hadn't planned on visiting Toontown without DS, but we were right there and looking for something short to do before lunch, so we stopped over to ride Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin.

My cousin & I used to watch this movie alllllll the time when we were kids, so even though the ride itself is pretty cheesy, it conjures up good memories. I especially love the queue with all the references to the movie! Again, no one in line behind us so we took some silly pictures along the way.

Oh, no! Not the Dip!

After spinning around Roger Rabbit's Toontown, we wanted around Mickey's Toontown and stopped in a shop to look around. I tried this hat on for DS.

If you read my last DL TR, you know what this little guy is! He missed him last trip in May and was practically devastated to find out there had been one in Toontown that he didn't see.

By now, we were ready for some lunch, so we crossed the hub over to Frontierland in search of food.

What would unknowingly be our last picture of the Castle

Construction walls, although I'm not sure what Fantasy Faire is going to be. Anyone know?

We ended up at the Golden Horseshoe Saloon for lunch, somewhere we had eaten last trip so we knew we'd find something we liked there.

One of us got the fish basket and the other got the chicken nuggets and we shared. It was line getting the fish & chicken basket at Columbia Harbour House again! We were so disappointed when it was not available last WDW trip...

We got our food and decided to go sit upstairs. Although it was not really busy inside the restaurant at all, it was nice to sit up in relative quiet since there were not many tables up there and only a couple of them had people. While we were eating our lunch, DH got a phone call from a 1-800 number but he ignored it and we continued eating and discussing what we wanted to do after lunch.

After we finished eating, I ran across the way to use the restroom and snapped a picture of this neat looking fountain.

And that was our last photo of the trip before everything spiraled out of control!

When I came out of the bathroom, DH was on the phone with an intense look on his face. I asked him if it was work, but he said it was Delta that had called while we were eating and left him a voicemail saying our flight out that night at 6:40 pm had been cancelled because of the storm coming! I immediately wanted to go into panic mode, but I held myself together. While DH used the app to see if there was an earlier flight, I started calling Delta and sat on hold for what felt like forever. While I was on hold, DH saw the only earlier flight was at 2:45 pm. Of course it was after 12 at that point, so we really didn't think that was possible.

Since I was still on hold, I suggested we just start walking to the exit in case we could somehow make it to that flight. An agent finally picked up as we were walking out towards the trams. He told me we had been automatically rebooked on a flight leaving LA that night at 11:55 pm that would send us through Atlanta with an 8 am flight from there the next morning getting us in at 9:15 am Tuesday. I told DH this and we wondered if we should just stick with that since we were already confirmed. It was kind of funny because by that time we were on the tram and the started making their usual announcements. The agent asked if we were at the airport and I had to explain that no, we were on a Disneyland tram because we had been in the park when we found out the flight was cancelled. We were trying to be positive and telling each other, well at least that gives us more time in the parks.

But then I decided to ask just to see if there were spots on the 2:45 pm flight, and he said there were. He was able to get us confirmed on that flight, but we were really going to have to book it to make it there. I thanked him profusely, and then the race was really on. I don't even want to know how fast DH was going on the Interstate to LA, but thankfully the Lord was on our side and we didn't hit any traffic. Don't tell, but DH was definitely passing people in the carpool lane!! While we were driving, we got an alert on the phone of another flight cancellation. I almost freaked, but it was telling me that the connecting flight the next morning from ATL had been cancelled. I guess since we had originally been rebooked for that flight, it was still sending us alerts. So than we were both really happy we had decided to chance hurrying to the airport for the earlier flight.

Somehow, we made it to LA, drove around for a gas station, returned the rental car, caught the shuttle to LAX, and made it there for 1:45 pm. This is one of the ONLY times I am thankful for my cheap husband! I had been so worried about only packing a carry on each to avoid baggage fees, but if we had needed to check luggage, we might not have made it.

Again, luck on our side, the wait for security was very short, so we had a little time to spare before boarding. I felt really relieved that we had called when we did because there were a LOT of people on the standby list and only a couple made it onto the flight.

DH and I had to sit separately, but it wasn't bad considering we were in Economy Comfort seats, which were a little larger than the regular coach seats. At first, I thought we must be in the wrong section of the plane! I was so nervous the whole flight that we would land in Atlanta and find out our connection had been cancelled and we would be stuck there. I was especially nervous that was the case when we landed and DH immediately checked his phone and made a face, but so far so good. I had a message from the parking lot people asking when we were coming in, so I called them back and let them know the change in plans. They let us know to call as soon as we landed in NOLA and someone would be able to come pick us up.

We landed in Atlanta somewhere around 10, and we didn't have much time between landing and our connection. But we landed a little early, so we actually had time to grab some dinner at Checker's before heading to our gate where they were running behind too. We found out there that we were on the absolute LAST flight getting into New Orleans, the rest had been cancelled due to the storm.

Our second flight, we were also in Economy Comfort, but the plane was smaller so it was only 2 seats on each side and we were able to sit together this time. It was a short, uneventful flight, and we landed in New Orleans at 11:35 pm.

Our last adventure was getting our car back! I called the company's number and a lady just answers, "Hello?" So immediately I'm thinking I called the wrong number but I asked if it was NOLA Airport Parking and she said yes. I told her we had landed and would need a shuttle to get our car. She told me that their shuttle was locked up and that we should look for a beige Camry to pick us up. Turns out it was the owner's wife who had forwarded all the company calls to her cell phone, hence the weird phone answering, and her and her husband were picking us up in their personal vehicle. When they got there, it was the most awkward car ride EVER.

First, the husband was basically telling us how they can never evacuate for a storm because they have to stay with the business if there are any cars parked there. And then he went on about how their night guy had called in for the night so they had needed to leave their kids sleeping at home to come get us. Basically we felt like they were blaming us for having to come get us so we could get our car! Then he asked how we found out about them and I answered that we had a Groupon. No lie, he asked, "Do you have $3.48 for tax?" So DH kind of chuckles and says yes, and he says sternly, "I'm serious, you need to pay the tax it's $3.48." Wow, really?! We have $5, it's okay! Then as we were finally pulling up to the place (seriously, the ride was less than 10 minutes but it was the most uncomfortable ride EVER), he actually asked us if we were SURE this was the place we had parked our car, like he couldn't believe people really used his business.

We paid our tax and a little extra for them coming out late at night to get us (he tried to give DH change ) and we booked it out of there. We got to my parent's house after midnight and went right to bed. I was never so happy to see my sweet DS's face as I was the next morning! Although it was not the way we would have liked the trip to end, we were so thankful we had not gotten stranded somewhere unable to get into NOLA with a storm coming and our DS not with us. We drove home well ahead of the storm.

I know that was wordy, but our trip home was just so ridiculous, it really begs to be shared! At least in my mind.

To wrap this up, I'll say that one thing occurred to me as we were driving to our house the next morning. I looked at DH and said, "Do you realize the worst part of this whole thing? Our last ride on our anniversary weekend in Disneyland was ROGER RABBIT!"

THE END

Souvenirs & TR Wrap Up

SOUVENIRS

Because I was a slacker, I didn't take pictures of all our souvenirs until recently so here they all are, or at least, all the ones I remembered to take a picture of! DH also bought quite a few Vinylmations, but unfortunately I didn't note which ones he ended up with and he doesn't remember, so I don't have pictures of those.

Shirt for DS in Hollywood

The shirt we got for him at the Soda Fountain

Kept up our tradition of a magnet for every trip. Last time we got a DL one, so this time we got one from the Soda Fountain

DH and I both got this shirt, but his a t-shirt while mine is a fitted women's shirt

A train for DS that he got for his birthday party

Found this adorable shirt in the shop outside of TSM and had to get it!

My coveted Red Car Trolley shirt!

DH's RSR shirt. I was really disappointed they didn't have more RSR shirts for women, and I didn't end up getting anything Cars Land for myself.

TR WRAP UP

1. CROWDS
Again, I found the parks a little more crowded than I had anticipated. However, it was a weekend at the end of summer, so I can't be too surprised about it. The one thing that probably worked to our advantage was that a lot of the APs were still blacked out that weekend, so that eliminated a large number of people from being in the parks. I guess if I lived in Southern California, I'd like to spend my weekend at Disneyland too! Although it was more crowded, with a good touring plan, getting to the parks early, and using FP, we didn't experience ANY long waits all weekend.

2. WEATHER
Well, it was definitely hotter in August than it was in May, and I got a decent sunburn. But without humidity, it was still a lot more comfortable than the weather back home or in WDW for that matter (since that's where we were considering taking our anniversary trip originally). Plus, it was so comfortable in the mornings and in the evenings when the sun went down, which is not something that can be said for Louisiana or Florida in August as well. I was definitely glad I had decided to bring a jacket with me, because I needed it quite a few times!

3. ACCOMMODATIONS
This was the first time in a LONG time we have stayed at a hotel instead of a Wyndham resort for more than 1 night. I was a little nervous about that at first, but it turns out I didn't need to be. The Peacock Suites suited our needs just fine! The breakfast left a little to be desired, but what can you expect when it's free? Besides, we didn't utilize it more than one morning anyway. The room was spacious and I loved the way it was decorated. The hallways were not especially loud, and the staff was always very friendly and helpful, from the front desk, to housekeeping, to the valet workers. We never encountered a rude employee during our stay and our one request (more towels) was met promptly. The price was also great, as was the proximity to the parking garage by car.

4. CARS LAND
In my opinion...WORTH THE HYPE!! I am not even that big of a fan of the movie Cars but they did a phenomenal job with themeing the area. It felt like you had stepped directly into the movie and into a "real" Radiator Springs. Seeing it lit up at night was also amazing and gave it a really authentic feel with all of the neon everywhere. The only disappointment for me was the merchandise (nothing really great for kids or women, we didn't even find anything good for DS) and Luigi's Flying Tires. RSR and Mater's were two big hits and we loved those attractions!

So, in the end, were we happy with our decision to go back to Disneyland for our anniversary weekend? Absolutely! We have been to WDW many times over just adults, but our only previous experience in DL had been with Paxton along. So it was nice to have a chance to enjoy some of the attractions together that we had only ever experienced solo before and to see some things like Cars Land and Buena Vista Street that were not completed on our last trip. And we got to spend more time enjoying the parks at night and seeing nighttime shows (Magical, MM&Y) we had missed out on last time, and allowed us more opportunities to stay late and see our favorite show, World of Color, twice without worrying about being back for bedtimes. After having just been there, 3.5 days was more than enough to do what we wanted to do in the parks. As we were making our way home, we actually discussed the fact that after lunch (had our trip not been cut so short), we weren't really sure if there was anything else we wanted to ride in DL and we were going to suggest to each other heading back over to DCA for a few attractions even though the plan had been to spend our last day entirely in DL.

It was wonderful to really put that Premier AP to use and squeeze in not one but two DL trips in the span of 4 months! When we bought the tickets planning the May trip, that in itself seemed like a dream come true. But being able to experience such a magical place in a totally different way a second time in less than a year was just simply amazing, and I feel we have been so blessed. And as I wrap this up, we are exactly 5 days away from our big birthday WDW trip! If you are not already, feel free to check out my PTR for that trip (link in my signature) so you can join in on the TR soon!

Thanks for reading!

But then...I pulled up my email confirmation on my phone and realized EE wasn't until 8 am. Doh! Yet another instance of my incorrect timing, but thankfully, it was also the last!
Wow, that time zone change really messed with you that weekend, didn't it?

I'd attribute it to the fact that not only did you make Early Entry, but you were the first ones there by an hour.

Truthfully though, that's a great morning. You really got a lot done there. It probably helped a little bit that it was just the 2 of you too.

I was thinking about your trip that weekend. I wondered how the timing worked out on that storm and your travels.

You probably could have made it... your luggage might not have been so lucky though.

So, can I take this to mean that you won't be taking advantage of cheap parking rates from Groupon again anytime soon?

That's actually really creepy. I'm not sure I'd just want to get in a car with somebody like that. And then to be treated that way... awkward...

Apparently they aren't interested in having your business again. They obviously weren't 100% sure they had your business the first time.

I'm glad you did. I really wondered how that worked out for you. I wasn't sure if you got in before or after the storm and I wondered what happened with Paxton when you got back and said your parents had some damage.

Hey, if that's the worst thing you can say, I'd say it was a great trip!

Thanks for the Trip Report. I loved seeing Carsland and seeing your take on Disneyland from a more adult perspective.

Have a great time on your upcoming trip and I look forward to seeing what you have to say about that one as well!
