I didn't mean to disappear either. I spent last Wednesday-Sunday on a last minute trip to La Habra (about 15 minutes from Disneyland) with some wonderful friends. They are my two favorite roommates from college, and we haven't seen much of each other the last 3 years. (We were pretty good about the 5 years post-grad before that!) It was a wonderful trip, (even if we never even made it to downtown Disney - one friend was days away from having her 2nd baby and the other had a needy 7-week old baby!) but I ate way too much chocolate. I was up about 3-4 lbs when I got back! But I have kicked into high gear and have bee (almost) religiously planning my entire menu before I eat it each day, staying quite low-carb, lower-fat, and high protein, and I have already lost it all! I am sticking with this during most of the next two months (with like a day "off" for Thanksgiving and Christmas) because I need some fast results. I seem to be quite marvelous at -maintaining- a weight, but I haven't actually lost any in about 6 months now. Time for a crack down to see some progress! I also jogged 3.5 miles with my sister yestrday morning (with very little walking!) and though it wiped me out, I already feel a little more confident about the Turkey Trot (5k on Thanksgiving)! I promise to be move present here. I need the motivation!

Commandment #2:

"Think Historically, Not Just Calorically"

This chapter is talking about our history with certain foods.... specially things that we call "triggers". "Two people may have very different history or response to a single 100 calorie cookie. For one person, the cookie may be satisfying - so much so that the person has never abused cookies in his life. For someone else, that one cookie may trigger them to want more and more and even binge on a whole box. Knowing which is true for you may ultimately prove more important to your long term success at weight control than knowing that the cookie has 100 calories."

This chapter mentions more than just trigger foods... they also mention "trigger situations", "trigger behaviors", and "trigger times". I know for myself, late night + hungry + tired = bad new in the kitchen!

So what are your triggers and what strategies have you developed (or are you developing) to deal with these??
Anything with sugar is a trigger for me! It sounds bad, but anything sweet is huge for me. It's like it opens a dam and then I can't stop eating sweets! Today my mom and I went to this little place to have brunch after weigh-in, and they have the yummiest coffee cake. I had way too many pieces! But I definitely am back on track today. The way I deal with it to just start back on plan right after that meal!

Glad to have you back with us. Sounds like fun with the friends...I'm envious !

I think you are right on track for some good losses for the next few weeks. I find when I really watch my carbs it helps a lot. Just don't deprive yourself too much!

Glad you enjoyed your brunch with Mom and are getting right back on track!

Lunch is done and cleaned up, DS is off to school for the final performance, and DD and I watched last night's ANTM. The sun is finally out so the laundry should be drying. Time to sit at the scrapping table for a bit!.............P

QOTD for Friday, November 1, 2012

Commandment #1:

Strategy is Stronger than Willpower. ".... those who succeed at weight control do not have greater willpower than those who fail - they just have better strategies."

When I read this statement in this book, it was a definite lightbulb moment for me. Folks have been asking me for a few years "how did you finally do it?" and "how are you keeping it off?" And I kept telling them that if I could answer that question intelligently (other than my pat answer of WW and exercise), I would write a book! Well... this statement is my answer. I developed new and better strategies.

What are YOUR best strategies... for any food/exercise related situation?? (If you have trouble thinking of something, think about this week's Halloween temptations... how did you handle that?).
My strategies have a way of changing depending on the situation. Halloween candy: got stuff we didn't like at the last minute and gave it all away. Exercising: race training helps with that. Also having an extra set of workout clothes in the car. No excuse not to go.

Not fun, and today I didn't do it (thanks 11 PM phone call and 3:30 AM dog). DH is an exercise fiend in the evening, but I just can't do that cuz I think it takes away "family time." Even if we're all looking at different screens, at least we're in the same room!

So today I didn't get my 5:30 AM 3 mile walk in, but I was able to meet my girlfriends midway through their walk so got in 2.1 miles! It was so wonderful to walk with my buddies again!!! Gosh I miss them, and the fast pace!
Great strategies, Linda! Have a magical time on your DLR trip. I will be thinking of your when I am in WDW. I hope you get to ride Radiator Springs Racers -- do the single rider line if you have to.

I think I'll be coming back a few lbs lighter too, although not for the greatest reasons... You'll be reading all about it soon enough.

But we're all doing ok and resting up for Hollywood Studios tomorrow! Beauty and the Beast: Live on Stage tomorrow! YAY! I'll try to update again if I can!
Sorry you had a touch of the bug, Ashley. Hope you are having a magical time!

I think a trigger behavior is more of a problem for me. The time between when I come home from work and dinner is dangerous for me -- we always had cocktails and nibbles at my house and then ate a full dinner -- not a recipe for weightloss success. I try to eat earlier and have healthy snacks available to satisfy that need for munching.

Great strategy, Kaiti!

I think it was Cam who used to always say "Your next bite is a chance to get it right."

T-minus four days and counting for me. A week from tonight Rose and I will be running the W&D along with about 15,000 of our closest friends. Anyone else doing this race that I am forgetting? I'm so excited and really looking forward to getting my Coast-to-Coast medal.

Don't forget to "fall back" tonight!

Looks like we are doing a trip to Disney next month that was totally unplanned and I do NOT want to go feeling like this ! Ugh! Gym bag is packed and I *WILL* get my cr@p together this week!

I have an appt with my trainer tomorrow and will be starting the Advocare 24 day Challenge on Monday so my dear fat cells....get off my butt!

QOTD: I'm a stress/emotional eater, but exercise helps. Lately I've been having a problem with after work/before dinner. My strategy for that has been to chew the heck out of a piece of gum!

Last night at 10:30 our doorbell rang and DS1 was at the door. surprise! Apparently it was father's weekend at college, but tickets to all the events were gone, so he decided to hitch a ride home. But then the crazy kid decided to spend the night at a friend's house. go figure Whatever, we had a nice little visit, then he came home today. He and DH are at Buffalo Wild Wings now eating and watching some football game. Think his ride back to college will be around before too long so he can make it back before his team's game. He's said tomorrow is a big study session for his math class. His TA for one class is trapped back east, and he says she's fine but it's aggravating because she hasn't input grades. Leave it to a teenager to have the world revolve him.

I'm "thinking" about packing and the trip. 5 more days

I'm Here! I'm Here! I'm Here!!!

This is our busiest time of year, even busier than December Holidays. We make a big "to-do" out of halloween and then our DD's birthday is the following week so I am always slammed with party prep, school party prep, fundraiser prep and halloween!

But....I'm still losing!

I managed to only steal THREE mini-york peppermint patties out of DD6's treat bag. They are my all time favorite...plus they are gluten free! What a major treat! I'm still trying hard to break back down into the 170's, but I felt like splurging a bit this week. It was a very nice pick me up!

So glad to see so many of our east-coaster friends faired the storm well. Been thinking of y'all lots!

Better run. My folks are here visiting this weekend...gotta get them fed!

I've been better about leaving a set of workout gear in the car as well.

Hang in there Michelle! It's amazing how many people I know her and on MFP who are having to do a reboot right now. We can do it!

I can see that it could be a tough time for folks.... the motivation of bikini season is behind us, we want to do some comfort eating when it is cold and dark, life is crazy busy again with kids activities... and holiday stress is starting to creep in. But as I mentioned a few days ago, now is a GREAT TIME to get remotivated and start 2013 off on a high note!

WOOHOO! Can't wait to see your medals! I'm so impressed!

Thanks for the clock change reminder.... I didn't need it this year, but I have at times in years past!

Sounds like you are ready to get back on track! You've got a few weeks to get yourself feeling better about next month's trip. What a great motivator!

WOW! Finally some friends to talk to!!

Sorry I didn't make it on this morning before church to post the QOTD. But with the light crowds here lately, I figured people weren't exactly lined up at their computers waiting!

We went to church and a quick stop at the grocery. Then home for me to make nice homemade pizzas for lunch and we FINALLY got to watch this past week's Survivor together. Dinner will be leftovers and whatever and we will watch Amazing Race before bed.

I made a new recipe last night and it was SO YUMMY! It is supposed to be a breakfast recipe, but I made it for DD and I for dessert last night. I can't WAIT to have it for breakfast some day! I'll share the recipe after I get the QOTD posted! ..............................P

QOTD for Sunday, November 4, 2012:

Commandment #3:

The Problem May Be in the Food, Not in You. "... research is exploring how the foods you eat today may change the chemistry of your brain in such a way as to increase your appetite and cravings for these and other foods - even without you being aware that this process is taking place."

"... overconsumption of fructose seems to alter appetite-regulating hormones in a way that stimulates overeating."

"Stress also depletes your body's glycogen fuel reserves. And the longer and more intense the stress, the lower your blood sugar will dip, which often leads to carbohydrate cravings."

"If the body has been deprived of sufficient calories during the day, the levels of metabolic regulator neuropeptide Y will rise once one starts eating. This leads to greater cravings for food, especially carbohydrates... At that point, it's hard to resist the body's chemical signals to consume. You turn into an eating automaton, without being aware of it. If you think you're an intelligent, responsible person, it's spooky how little control you have over this."

"Sleep deprivation is known to jump-start your appetite, particularly carbohydrate cravings."

So many of these are things that we need to be aware of so that we can plan for them (and plan to AVOID them) and keep in control. Things like stress, over-eating sugar, under-eating or meal skipping, and lack of sleep have HUGE consequences in regards to our appetite, hunger, and food control.

Are you guilty of letting some of these things control your appetite? Do you skip breakfast (or breakfast AND lunch), thinking that you are skipping calories so you can lose weight? Or you're just too busy? Do you get enough sleep? If not, what is your excuse? Could you make changes to your schedule to allow more sleep?

Are you doing things to help alleviate stress? Yoga, meditation, prayer?

What POSITIVE changes can you make (other than food changes) in your life to help you and your body and your brain start making better food choices???

Pumpkin Pie Quinoa breakfast casserole

Pumpkin Pie Quinoa Breakfast Casserole

by Leanne Vogel
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients (2 servings)
Bake
2/3 cup almond milk
1/4 cup pumpkin puree
1/4 cup quinoa red or white would work
1 tbsp maple syrup
1 tsp coconut oil
1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
pinch ground nutmeg
pinch ground ginger
Topping
1 tbsp coconut oil, melted
1 tbsp maple syrup
1.5 tbsp finely ground almond flour
1/4 cup pecans, chopped

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350F and lightly oil a 4 cup casserole dish. [I used a small dab of coconut oil]
In a small bowl combine all ingredients, minus the topping. Stir until fully mixed, then pour into prepared casserole dish.
Cover and cook for 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, combine all topping ingredients. After the 30 minutes are up, remove casserole from oven and sprinkle topping over top of the casserole.
Return to the oven and cook uncovered for another 10-15 minutes, or until golden. [Mine was ready in 12 minutes]

Here is a link to the website where I found the recipe. She had some other interesting ones you might want to check out!

I made a slightly different crumb topping. I substituted quick cook oats for the 1/4 C of pecans. I also used just 1/2 Tb of maple syrup in the topping and only 1 tsp. of the coconut oil. That said, when I was eating it for dessert I felt it wasn't quite sweet enough so I topped my serving with another Tb. of the syrup. It would probably be sweet enough for breakfast though. I tried it both room temp and warm and WARM was definitely better.

ENJOY!..................P

I ran the 5K at the zoo yesterday and then went back today with my 2 godchildren and their brother (6,6 and 8) ....

A 2 year old was killed right where we took break to have a snack. People were yelling and screaming. At first I thought an animal got out and quickly took the children into the eatery in front of the wild dog exhibit. As I kept distracting the children so that they weren't listening or watching the adults crying, I found out a child fell into the exhibit. We were kept in the eatery, however, everything was happening right outside. I could detail more, but, I really don't want to upset anyone.

Please keep these people in your prayers. I am still so shook up over the incident. I took the children home and they kept asking what happened. They heard that someone fell into the exhibit and I told them that the ambulance was there and would take them to the hospital and make them better. We were evacuated from the zoo and when I came home I found out the child died.

Thanks for reading/listening everyone. I will catch up of the boards tomorrow. And give your loved ones a hug tonight.

Oh, I'm so sorry that you and children witnessed that and I'm really sorry for the family. You and all involved will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Well it has been an interesting week...my DH was diagnosed with diabetes last week and we have been struggling to figure out what to do ever since we have not been provided with education or diet guidelines so we have been trying to research online to try and figure it out....needless to say my diet has went to hell as I have been so stressed that I have been binge eating junk food when he is not around
So need to get a grip....my weight has been up and down the same 3 lbs for the past couple weeks as well so that is not helping my motivation. GGGRRRRRRR

so now to get that grip!! Diabetes fair is at hospital on Wednesday so we will be attending that. we need o get exercising however he will be hitting the gym during the day and I want to try and comity to at least 2 nights after work...
Hate to step on the scale in the morning but am going to see what type of damage I have done over the weekend....

Hope all is well with everyone...and everyone is safe!!!!

What s horrible tragedy at the zoo I can't even imagine...
Sounds like everyone is having a great time at Disney (jealous) and have had some amazing races...I had hoped to find one around thanksgiving but may have to wait till the jingle bell run...

Will try to get more focused and check in more often....j
