The 'We-Are-Not-Supposed-To-Be-Going-To-WDW-In-2012 PTR

Hello to all my fellow WDW fans. I have spent the last two years reading all your PTR and TR - plus alooooot of Dining Reviews so I really thought I ought to return the hours of fun and make an effort to write my first PTR and (hopefully) TR!

Cast:

Laura (me!) - 42 year old Disney lover. First went to WDW in 1987 when my Dad won a sales competition with the brewery he worked for at the time. My parents, sister and I went to WDW for a week in February staying at Fantasy World Club Villas. I was 17 and, at that point, it was the best week of my life!

Dave - DH - about to hit the big 5-0!

Charlie - 6 (and a half as he would say) - long awaited only child and pride and joy

Disney History:
When I was a student and met my future husband (who had never been anywhere other than France on a ferry), I spent most of my final year working two jobs while we saved up to go on a budget trip staying at what was then The Catalina Inn. He was hooked - thankfully. I often look back on that holiday with its tiny budget and cheap hotel and think it was our happiest trip ever - even compared to the big budget ones we have been lucky enough to have since. Nothing like that first trip. Once we got engaged and I embarked on military style wedding planning, my husband's only request amongst all the organisation was that we go to Disneyworld for our honeymoon. So we went for three weeks at the Port Orleans (French Quarter as it is now) which was just wonderful. Since then we have had many trips!

I am a deputy head in a primary school and a number of years ago, I wasn't sure that I wanted to go the leadership route. An opportunity came up to teach in the US and, of course, I chose Florida! We went out in 2003 moving to a suburb just outside Fort Lauderdale. To cut a very long story short, we both loved it - and didn't love it. It was great weather, we had wonderful weekends nipping to the Keys or over to Naples (and even a long weekend to stay at the Atlantis in the Bahamas once!), we took a lot of WDW and US trips and we had a lot of family and friends visiting. But there were things we didn't love - I was very homesick and I really didn't enjoy teaching over there (felt like a different job to over here) and the US is not the same country just because it speaks the same language and we found it harder than we had realised to find anything out or organise anything we needed to. Also, we still had to work out there and, believe it or not, driving past the end of the Turnpike with its sign saying North to Orlando every day when you are on your way to work is not easy! In a way it's torture as you are so near and yet so far! So after a year we came home. Not an easy decision but the right one I think.

Not to go into too many personal details but we had spent a long time trying to have a baby before we went to Florida and we had never been successful. We came home in August 2004, moved into a new house in March 2005 and by May 2005 I was pregnant!! We were over the moon and in Feb 2006 Charlie was born. Of course this all meant we had a break of almost five years (I never thought I could do that!) from WDW. We took Charlie when he was just three in 2009 and it was the perfect trip - everything we could possibly have wanted and more. Since then we went back in 2010 and 2011 so he is quite the little disney veteran at 6 (and a half)!

How this trip came about:
After three consecutive years of WDW holidays, we decided we would have a year off in 2012. We had a lovely trip to Malta in February which was great and we are going to London for a week at the end of August which is, of course, costing an arm and a leg. That was supposed to be it for this year. We have already booked for next Summer staying back at the POFQ and we talk about that trip quite a lot. After we got back from Malta, I started to think about Dave's birthday. My initial idea was to go to a certain well known 'tropical' themed activity village that rhymes with Menter Marks (!). We have done this before with friends. But the cost for October HT was astronomical based on what you get for your money. One day driving home from work, I thought 'Wouldn't it be great to do a surprise trip to WDW instead?'. That was it - the idea was in my head and immoveable! I researched and booked flights in March and have been keeping the secret ever since. Neither Dave nor Charlie know! This is very hard. I only realised how much WDW comes up in our everyday conversations after I had booked the secret trip making it very hard not to say anything. Of course I can't tell Charlie either as a six year old can't keep a secret this big. A few people know so I can talk about it a bit but it is tough!!

The Plans:
Oct 27th - Nov 3rd - I know it's a long way to go for a week but I am a teacher so have no choice. The next time we can have a two week trip is Christmas which is mad busy and expensive. Dave's birthday is Oct 6th so Oct HT is the closest school holiday.

Flights - Man to Atlanta to Orlando with Delta. Again I would have loved to fly direct but Virgin are just exhorbitant in the school hols and this trip is not supposed to be happening anyway! Not flown Delta before so that will be interesting.

Hotel - I thought about this one for a long time. To begin with I thought I'd wait it out to see if free dining came up and book into POFQ. Meanwhile I was browsing around and came across a great deal at the Fairfield Inn LBV. I have seen this hotel in its little cluster of Marriott hotels before and thought what a good location for an offsite hotel. We love Bahama Breeze and it's right next door. I priced this up against staying at POFQ. Even factoring in free dining as opposed to paying OOP offsite, the Fairfield came out a couple of hundred pounds cheaper overall. Again, as there is supposed to be no trip this year I went for the sensible option and booked the Fairfield. Since read some great reviews and know it has some fans on here. The other thing for us was that, last year when we were are the POFQ for the whole holiday, we missed getting out and about in Florida. Because we have lived there, we enjoy a lot of things about Florida outside of WDW.

Car - didn't have one last year as we never do staying onsite. So I started shopping around. Someone posted a link to SIXT on here for an offer for a luxury car. I found out they were just off airport property but the deal was so amazing (approx £60 for a week's rental of a Mercedes E-Class or similar inc insurances) that I decided an extra half an hour or so was worth it. Hope I'm right!

Tickets - only thing left to get. Think I am going to go for 5 day basic passes as I want to do a couple of days at the beach or doing other things.

After I booked we did have two disney disasters. The first one was when they extended Test Track's closing from end of Sept to end of Nov. This has always been Charlie's absolute favourite ride - I am still living in hope they may get ahead and open at the end of Oct instead! The other one is that I found out the TL closes on the day we arrive. This is my favourite park - I know; weird. I was gutted. The day we arrive!! We just don't get on with BB. Hence the trips off to the gulf coast. Not an adequate substitution but what can I do? I honestly (fleetingly) felt like writing to disney and asking them to shut BB first and then do TL after but decided they are unlikely to change their refurb schedule based on my husband's surprise trip!

The reveal:
So, Dave's birthday is Oct 6th. The plan is for he and Charlie to find out then which is exactly three weeks to go. I haven't completely decided yet but I think I will do something along the lines of a box within a box within a box etc. In each box will be part of the message until we get to the smallest box which will have the destination of his surprise trip and some WDW stuff - new t-shirt/hat/guidebook etc. To be honest, even though the trip is for Dave's birthday, I can't wait to tell Charlie the most. He will be over the moon! Since his 6th birthday he has really got into Star Wars. When we went last year he rode Star Tours but didn't know anything about it really. He is now a walking encyclopaedia on the subject and spends time every day talking about seeing the AT-AT, making his own lightsaber and being in the Jedi Training Academy. He thinks it will be next summer which he says is ages and I sometimes say 'It will probably pass faster than you think!'.

So, will keep you updated. I need to learn how to add photos as I tried but couldn't work it out. Hope to write something of interest for some of you out there after having such a good time reading about all your wonderful trips!

how totally fab..

Looking forward to hearing about 'Surprise Day'. I know what you mean though about once something enters into your head as a 'Good Idea' then its so difficult to get it out of your mind that you might as well just 'go for it'

It would be killing me to try and keep it secret and I really think I would have told all by now..so very well done

It has not been easy! I almost cracked and told them today. We were transfering some films onto SD cards and came across Song of the South which my husband put on to listen to the Splash Mountain songs. This started a conversation about WDW and how wonderful it was between my husband and son. The urge to say 'Well, actually what would you say if I told you we don't have a year to wait; we only have 11 weeks!!!' was huge. I went into the bathroom and took deep breaths. The moment had passed by the time I came out!

Well, I didn't quite make it. Turns out I leave a little to be desired in the secret keeping department - I caved and told my husband and son last night!! We have just come back from a holiday in London and have had a great week. They were both feeling sad the holiday was over and I started thinking of telling them. I thought that it made (a little) sense to tell them on the day we came home from holiday and decided I just couldn't keep the secret any longer.

I disappeared upstairs and printed off the sheets of paper I had already made that I was going to put in boxes and I also printed out my son's countdown chart after changing it from 21 boxes to 63! I put them all in an envelope and sat them down on the sofa. I told my son (who is a very good reader for his age) he was to read each page I showed him out loud to Daddy (it was a bit like the Andrew Lincoln/Kiera Knightley seen in Love Actually for those of you who know what I mean!). He read each page which went:

*It's always sad to come home from a holiday...
*So I thought I would give you some good news to make it easier...
*This is a surprise for Daddy's Birthday...
*I wasn't supposed to tell you yet but I can't wait any longer...
*So nine weeks today we are going to...
*DISNEYWORLD!!!

It was lovely.Charlie jumped around the room and Dave...cried! My husband is a quite tough but is a softy at heart and he was overcome! Needless to say, they were both chuffed to bits. I then had all the fun of telling them all the details today and yesterday and it is a lovely to see a countdown chart on the wall again!

So, although I am a little disappointed I didn't manage to keep the secret for another six weeks, I am glad it is out of the bag and I can talk about it openly at last. It explains to Dave why I have been tight with money too - he said things made a lot more sense now! Also means we can both do a nine week health drive to be fitter and thinner (again!). Dave can be involved in the last few decisions too so that's good.

Thank you for showing an interest and all your kind comments. Daily discussions are being had in our household about our plans now which is great - as you all know! We have decided to go for a 6 day WDW pass instead of a 5 and just have one beach day. This is mostly because of the difficulties I am having avoiding the MNSSHP and early magic hours. I really don't want to pay extra for park hopping so this makes it tricky.

Even when we stay onsite we never do the early magic hours. We did it once and the park that opened early was so terribly busy it put us off ever trying it again. And of course, this time we are not onsite so I want to stay well clear. But it has been really difficult to avoid with the addition of the MNSSHP event at the Magic Kingdom. Charlie is really spooked by Halloween - or has been up to now anyway. He really wouldn't enjoy the costumes - only just got him to dress up himself in the last year (and only as a police officer!) and he has never had his face painted. So going to the party was never an option for us.

So basically, the daily plans we have to follow give us very little choice and so we decided to throw in an extra day to give us a bit more flexibility. There are only two nights while we are there that MK does not have MNSSHP so both those days have to be MK days. While Charlie has been young, we have not been at the parks at night as we slavishly stuck to bedtime routines - even on holiday! But on our final night last summer, we were at the MK until around 8pm and came out of somewhere to find everywhere lit up. Charlie just stopped and said 'It's so beautiful!' Which of course it is! It brought tears to my ears. I had forgotten how wonderful WDW is at night in the parks. So we think Charlie can cope with been there later now so we want to take advantage of that. Really looking forward to been at MK or Epcot at night - love the sparkly pavements!

Had a minor disaster last weekend. Decided to do the ESTAs as our last ones have just run out and I still haven't done the Delta API online. Went to get the passports out of the holiday file and mine WASN'T THERE!!! In my job I get asked to sign other people's forms quite a bit and I last had it to sign one of Dave's friend's passport application about two months ago. Obviously I didn't put it back in the right place and now it has gone missing. We turned the house upside down but can't find it anywhere. I would only have got one more trip out of it anyway as it was up next summer but still...7 weeks to go and I need a passport! I was so glad I am obsessively organised and had not left the ESTAs or API until the last minute as I really would have been up the creek then. So I had to go through the faff of getting the passport form, filling it out, downloading the lost passport form and filling that out, getting passport photos done, getting the photos and form countersigned and getting it sent from the post office. So it went Tuesday. The man gave me a number to call if I haven't heard anything in four weeks but said it should be fine as it is a quiet time of the year for passports. Still I will worry until I have it back. Of course, the next time I am looking for something else in the house you just know what I will find don't you?!

So apart from the ESTAs/API I still have a few things to do - need to sort out the car parking and buy a few last bits of clothes and I need sun cream. Also need to buy Dave something for his birthday although I have told him it will be small given the real present is a trip to his favourite place in the world!

Have had some holiday trauma this week which some of you will know from the planning boards.

Basically we got an email from Netflights on Monday night to tell us there was a 'minor' change to our return flight. Instead of flying MCO-ATL-MAN and getting into Manchester in the early morning, they were rerouting us to go MCO-ATL-CDG (Paris)-MAN with us now getting into Manchester in the afternoon!!! An extra connection and several extra hours is not what I call a minor change. After hitting the roof, I rang the next day and was told that Delta have decided to only run that route every other day and so the flight I booked in April (!) was no longer available. I was not happy as I'm sure you can imagine. Of course, if we wanted we could have a full refund. There was the minor issue of us having paid for hotel/tickets/car hire etc but at least we could get our flight money back!! Needless to say I was not happy with that solution. We could also move the flight back a day or forward a day. No-one wants to lose a day from a week long holiday so that was out. Coming back a day later was a big problem as, of course, I don't have a job where I can just book an extra day off. I felt very unhappy.

So after a lot of thinking and a quick discussion with my boss, we moved the return date back a day. We get in at 8am, will drive home and I will then go to work - probably arriving an hour or so after the start of school. Dave has the day off anyway and we will keep Charlie at home. This is far from ideal but at least I don't teach on Mondays and quite frankly, the idea of leaving Dave with the unpacking, washing and supermarket shopping is appealing. I just have to make sure I get a few hours sleep on the plane so will have a couple of alcoholic drinks (which I never normally do) and take some travel tablets that make me drowsy! At least being at school will keep me awake.

It just makes me so cross that when you carefully select, book and pay for a service in April that the airlines can just decide to cancel it six weeks before you go

Anyway, having sorted out the change of flight, we had to find a hotel for the night. Now we probably could have extended our stay at the Fairfield Inn but decided instead to go to the Port Orleans French Quarter for one night! So we have booked that which will be lovely.

I'm just hoping there is no more drama now

Hi, just come across your PTR.

Think you made the right decision with the flights. We were booked on the MAN - ATL - MCO route with Delta but opted for the refund and booked with US airways as they had gone cheaper for our dates.

We will be there same time as you.

My DD is same age as your son (lJan 2006) and is also an only child and a disney veteran (this will be her 6th florida trip age 6)

Looking forward to your updates

Well, we now have only six days to go! This time next week we will be in Hollywood Studios (touch wood!) on TSM or doing the Jedi Academy maybe?!

We are all at work or school right up until Friday so I have been finishing the majority of the packing today. Just a few more things to go in at the end of the week.

Dave and I have both said it doesn't feel real - we never normally go this time of year and we are both so busy at work. I think we will only feel it's real when we are on the way to Manchester Airport at 5.15pm next Sat am!

Lots of excitement from Charlie as you can imagine. He's been saving up money so it is already burning a hole in his pocket - just have to stop him spending it on the first thing he sees! I think he may be building his own R2 unit next Sun!

Probably won't have time to post again before we go. So, to all those going in the near future, have a wonderful time -maybe see you there!!
