Honestly, I find the early too early and the late too late. I wish there was one in between...

I guess that's what Cabanas is for, lol! I agree though, something in between would be better.

That would be difficult to do. Having a dinner seating with a start time of 6:45-7:00 would push early dining to a start time of 4:00-4:30 or late dining to start time of 9:30-10:00.

They need about 45 minutes to do the turnover between services. And then you'd have a ton more people trying for that "perfect" dinner time, and far fewer people interested in the "other" dininner time.

We liked 2nd seating but we were adults-only and didn't have to worry about kids' bedtimes. It gave us time to get cleaned up when we got back from shore excursions and we enjoyed seeing the show before dinner.

second.

don’t have little ones, but would most likely still choose this even if we did. there are plenty of daytime food options and our priority is more of the excursions and such. i agree i don’t see how they could change the times really, but the early is definitely too early to make what with all the stuff to do in the day!

however, i should probably vote for early so people keep thinking that one is “the best”

We like late dining. We like not having to be on an excursion and have to hurry back and get ready for dinner.

When the ship goes to the islands....how soon can you get off and when do you have to be back? Does it vary?

I was thinking second seating for the same reason.

The first time we cruised with Disney we had the late seating. I didn't know any thing about the dine and play. DD5 at the time would be asleep at the table by 10pm before dessert would arrive.

After that it was always early seating. I found that we were constantly rushing to get ready for dinner and could barely make it in time. Also having a late lunch upon embarkation we never felt hungry the first night.
Show times were always crowded. For the Brave showing in June, you couldn't even see your feet while waiting to get inside the theater and that was 40 minutes before show time!!

We eat late in our house.

Our last cruise on the 2 night out of NYC, was booked last minute so we had no choice but the late seating. DD now 15 loved it.
She stated that time is more compatible for her to hang out in Vibes in the evenings.
I found that I was able to enjoy the ship more. No need to be rushing to get dressed early. Saw the 5.30pm show in our regular clothes, then had plenty of time to get dressed then go for dinner. No need to return to cabin after dinner, we went straight to the clubs- we had fast servers and were done by 9.45pm the latest.
Over all, I felt I had more time to do and see more, relax plus sample more food (fruits, ice cream, sandwiches etc), during late seating.

I liked it so much that I changed my next 8 night cruise from early to late seating.

Us too! even in the Med with later port ones, we'd walk onto ship and straight to dinner with no issues.

Late dinner starts late and ends even later

And what I don't understand is why main dining is always wait listed when everyone seems to prefer late seating.

I also prefer the early seating. We eat dinner early at home every night, so the late seating just feels too late for us.

We prefer late for cruising. Primarily because we want time to enjoy the ports and/or ship. We found DCL to be difficult with late seating. Late seating means early shows which means almost no benefit to late dining. Other lines do a mix of shows with some being after late dinner, which we love.

We are still doing late dining on our next DCL cruise but will probably skip the MDR on pirate night and maybe other nights too. We will see.

Big thing about dining time is learning when the animators palate show night is and being sure to be there for that.

LATE seating:

I don't like to be rushed. Gives more fexibility. Stay later in the pool...later laying out...relaxing while getting ready for dinner.

I loved how the kids club would come to pick up the kids during dinner. Awesome!

Gives young ones who need a nap to be able to do so.

After 5 DCL cruises the only show we make sure to see is Dreams. It still brings me and DD to tears.

I love sunsets. I would have missed many being in the dining room.

I loved watching us sail slowly out of ports.

I love being almost the last person off Castaway Cay.

I loved late breakfast.
