Rocky Mount NC
We found this place, a Country Inn, to be clean and safe, and just far enough off I95 as to not be 'highway seedy'. Rocky Mount is still a good hike from Orlando, but a good midway point to recharge and refresh.

A few miles off the Interstate but well worth the drive was the Residence Inn at Amelia Island. We stopped there overnight on our way home from Vero Beach. Nice hotel within walking distance of the beach, plenty of free beach parking if you want to drive there, and a nice seafood restaurant between the two.
