7/7 - A Birthday Song

7/7 - A Birthday Song

So now that Steve and Zoe were on their way back to DL to meet us for dinner, we needed to come up with a meeting place. Since we had yet to see Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, it seemed a great place.

Sorry, I have no pictures of my own. For the sake of my WDW readers, I will snag some from the internet just so you can see how awesome this attraction is.

Taken from the interent

I think the animatronic Lincoln is amazing... sitting..standing... waving. He is so real looking it is eerie. I like this much more than either of the other patriotic attractions in WDW. President Lincoln is one of my favorite presidents in history. I think to be president at such a time would have been quite challenging.

After this, it was time for dinner. I had made an reservation (outside of Disney) for a place in DTD. A little more back story is that I had read you can sign up for the Patina group's member..something... and for your birthday they send you quite the nice little gift. (Did I forget to mention somewhere along the line that July is Steve's birth month? ) The gift? Well, if we wanted to go to the Disney concert Hall and eat in LA it was worth $50. If in DTD, it was worth $30. There are several DTD restaurants in the Patina group. Our decision was based on a. where Steve would like to eat and if there would be anything on the menu for the rest of us. and b. where we would get the most bang for the $30. We chose Tortilla Jo's.

This was such an awesome meal. We started with the table side guacamole. (simply a MUST if you go here) It is not anything like what they serve on their dishes. So fresh! YUM... and the fact it was CA avocado month didn't hurt. They come round with a cart with all the fixings and ask you how you want it made. She prepares it right there. Again, YUM! I could have had that and chips and I would have been happy.

I didn't take many pictures. I am not sure why. Maybe because so much was going on around us. Or maybe it was because the food was sooo darn yummy. After a day of pretty gross food, it was so nice to have a good meal.

I got a few pictures though of everyone looking over the menu.

Sadly, I can't remember what we ate. It was all good though and we were all stuffed by the end.

However, the food was not the only thing to celebrate there. I did mention a lot was going on, right? Well remember it is Steve's birthday meal. So what happens at mexican restaurants when it is someones birthday? Yes, a song... or in our case.. many songs. All sung to Steve.

I didnt take a picture of all the gals, but they wrapped around the table behind me and sang and sang.. and honestly we didn't quite know what to do. They were very good... loud, but with beautiful voices and they played their instruments wonderfully. However, after several songs we began to fell a bit uncomfortable. Were we suppose to tip? I wasn't sure. In any case it was fun and we did enjoy it.

In the end though, for such an awesome meal it really was really affordable (one of our cheaper meals) due to that gift certificate.

What a fun birthday dinner! And it sounds really yummy, too!

But, I would've been uncomfortable as well with so many songs. I don't think I've seen anywhere that does more than 1 song.

So I mentioned that I decided to just stay up at 3am. Our shuttle to the airport was scheduled for 4:30am for our 6:55am flight. I am glad that I decided to just stay up. I was super tired, but even though we had only been there about 12 hours, it took us a bit to pack up and get ready. As we ran out of time (after I got everyone else up and ready) I ran out of time to do my hair. I decided we would have plenty of time at the airport and to just do it then.

We had a super nice driver. He got us to the airport in no time. My only complaint was (and this is on me...I forgot this is how it worked) that we were not dropped off right at departures and ended up needing to cross a roadway of sorts in order to get to the airport. We all had a piece of luggage so it was a bit tricky to navigate since we were all tired and didn't quite know where we were going.

Once we got inside the airport we went to a kiosk and began our check in process. This was a bit new to us since we had a person in the military to check bags. I was confused at first so I didn't check Zach in and went to an agent who then told me that I needed to go back and check him in at the kiosk but put that he has 0 bags. Then I would need to go back to see her. Zach as an active service member gets up to 5 free checked bags. Guess what? We checked one for each of us.. under his name. That was quite the savings!!!

After we sent our bags on we went to find our gate. Unlike our nice gate that was near a bunch of restaurants in Decembe, it was a small gate in an area with barely anything near it. However this remoteness made it so that using the bathroom to do my hair was not so embarrassing since few people were coming in. Course, then again maybe it was because no one else was up that early.

After I was ready, I didn't have too much time to take many pictures. I was able to get this of the boys though.

Soon it was time to board and we were on our way to Orange County. The seats were comfy and roomier than the ones we had on our United flight back in December.

We flew over this

Mt. Rainier is not too far from where we live. I am not sure what side of the mountain we are passing over, but I assume we passed right over our house.

Steve slept almost the entire flight as did Zach. The rest of us snoozed a bit here and there.

Our seating was Steve, myself and then Zoe at the window with Alex directly behind her and then Zach behind me. (oh what fun that is to have a nearly 200 pound male using their table as a head rest to sleep on.)

In front of us were two children. (I suspect twins - boy and girl) They were about Zoe's age and their mother was in front of them. Now, I try not to judge. My kids can be grumpy and snippy and even entitled. They are by no means perfect nor am I a perfect mom. However... these kids and their mother. I have a feeling they do not fly often. Zoe may have bumped their seat a time or two. The seats were kinda bumpy for a while (yes, turbulence can make your seat jostle who knew?) and ultimately when I retrieved my bag from under their seat, they started complaining. Now, a simple could you not touch my seat would have sufficed. (and even then really?) However, they wouldn't let it go. I said ok and they kept up with "really, don't don't my sisters seat again". I wanted to say "or what?" and just when I was about to get a bit snippy they flipped up the seat divider as if slamming a door in my face. Meanwhile mom was catering to them in weird ways. When they had to use the rest room she instructed them to climb over the stranger in the seat next to them (who was asleep) Then when snacks came round, she all but told the flight attendant to give her monsters the sleeping person's portion because she wanted to make her kids feel like they had a lot. Even the flight attendant gave her a funny look like "are you kidding me?" At another point in the flight, they were unhappy with how Zoe had her table down and it was bothering them again. Mom told them to climb up to be with her if they wanted personal space. The persons next to her put a stop to that though...they didn't want to have one of those kids climb over the back of their seats to get to the mom. (how rude of them to not allow it ) Another point in the flight Zoe began to sing to herself. Now, I love my dd but she isn't the best vocalist. Not bad for a 7 year old, but not a disney star. The two children started pointing back at her and laughing and huddling in close together. I assumed that it was because of the singing and the huddling was to whisper to each other. Shortly after we landed. All of a sudden Zoe could not find her head band (which apparently was special to her ) I suspect that is what the children were laughing at. By the end of the trip we would learn something else that was very important was not longer with us...and it very well may have been on this flight that the item was lost...but then again maybe not. In any case, these kids were overly entitled and little brats!!!

We deplaned (not fast enough to get away from the monsters) and Zoe and I headed to a restroom while the boys waited for us. It took Zoe a bit of time to cath. Once out, we went to baggage claim. Wouldn't you know it? In the half hour we took the bags had not only arrived, but ours had lingered too long and were not locked in an office. Not sure why these things happen when we are tired..but they do. We paged someone from the airline to come and open the office for us (I knew they were in the office because I could seen them behind the glass)

Once we had our luggage in hand it was time to go to.

Now, we made the mistake of crossing the road to where all the other shuttles were. We then had to back track and find this odd little space under an over pass of some kind...and when we got there, we found we JUST missed the last bus and we would have to wait nearly an hour for the next one.

So after checking in and getting our "return ticket" we waited. We used the restroom again. Zach bought some snacks and we waited and waited.

Finally, this showed up.

For those of you curious, this bus ride was quite nice and really comfy. The cost was about the same as taking any other mode of transport. I was able to pre purchase a family ticket (that is good for up to 5 people) There is only one that comes to collect passengers and we all rode to each resort until we came to ours. You would think this would make for a long ride, but I think we only stopped at two other hotels before stopping at ours.

Next Chapter: 7/6 - With Our Room Not Ready, What do we do?

We are coming aug 30 for the half marathon and haven't lined up a shuttle to our hotel. Can you give me the info on this shuttle?? I am lost at DL. A WDW regular but I have no idea what I'm doing at DL!

What a fun birthday celebration, and so glad you had a good meal after the preivous day. I think I would have been a little embarrassed too after a few songs.

Yes, the songs were a bit on the embarrassing side.

You want to take the same bus we did? First, are you flying into SNA? SNA is the only one to currently still have the wrapped busses. If you want a "disney" bus then you will only get one if you fly into SNA. Second, how many people? For groups of up to 5 you can prepay/book a family pass and it is cheaper. There are other options... super shuttle.. limo...etc. I just chose this one cause I wanted the "disney feel" I am not sure it was necessarily the cheapest.

HEREis a link to some information. Just click on the disneyland link and it will bump you down in the page to the info that is specific to DLR

Just let me know if you have any other questions!

The food was good.. and.. believe it or not.. this is all the same day! Odd, eh? That is one thing I did notice about this trip. Without all the transportation issues... and being able to walk maybe 5 minutes from our room to the bag check made it so that we fit in so much. I look at all we did (even with the long lines and crowds) and feel like it is comparable to what a full weeks vacay in WDW would allow.

Sorry for interrupting your great TR with more questions. We are flying into LAX and staying at a nearby hotel. I had heard the Disney bus will only pick up if you stay at their resorts, like at WDW. We are a group of four runners. What would you best recommend? I'd read some on prepaying for the Super Shuttle but....is that the cheapest/most reputable since we won't get the cool Disney feel coming into LAX? LOVING your report!

No apologies needed. I think my TR is a success if someone can learn something from my experience.

So...I assume by nearby hotel, you mean nearby to DL...not LAX.

Technically, the Disneyland Express is not Disney owned or operated. So yes... it will take you to non disney hotels. DME at WDW is Disney operated...and it is my understanding even when one gets a MEARS bus... they are still contracted with WDW...not independent.

I have only flown into LAX once... and from there we did take a super shuttle. It was kinda scary in that the driver drove like we were in some sort of movie chase scene. Sadly, from what I have read. (and also what I saw a bit of) the Disneyland Express is no longer allowed the disney wraps on buses that service LAX. (so you will not get the disney feel... but the bus will remind you of a really clean DME bus inside) I am not sure why the buses from LAX can't have them. We flew into SNA...so the wraps are still on those buses. I am jumping to the end of my report a bit here... but when we were picked up at our hotel to go to the airport. The only bus coming to the non disney hotels that day at that time was one going to LAX. Just as I had read about (and noted here) it did not have the wrap. When we were then dropped off at DLH to transfer to a bus going to SNA, the wrap was on the bus.

All of this being sad though, I would probably take the Disneyland Express from LAX just because for the 4 of you it would be cheaper.

Quote:
“Family Pass” for up to 5 people roundtrip from/to LAX costs $99.99. It must be purchased in advance online.
The link to book that is HERE

There is other ways too...rent a car... rent a limo..etc. Good luck and have fun!

7/7 - Together - Apart - Together - Apart, a Pattern for the night

7/7 - Together - Apart - Together - Apart, a Pattern for the night

Once we were done with dinner, we decided that Zach and I (cause we are more in shape maybe? ) would run the leftovers back to the hotel. (yay for a refrigerator)

Steve took Zoe and Alex back into DL. In the time it took for Zach and I to get back to the hotel, Zach to change and us to return to DL, they had managed to ride IASM and HM. We were suppose to meet at IASM. The crowds were super heavy, so Zach and I opted not to ride the ride. I did however, take some pics since I very much so love the exterior of it here.

As evident by the clock on IASM, it was now 8pm. Zach and I meandered across the park to HM where we rode the ride.

I LOVE the outside of this ride too. Apparently I failed to get any good pictures.

Well, for those who have not seen this version I will snag an internet pic to share.

Once Zach and I were off of the ride, we found Steve and the other two kids had just made it to the outside and were waiting for us.

Together again, we made the short little trek from HM to Winnie the Pooh.

I think it was at this point that we decided to get a dole whip from this stand.

very small compared to the ones you get in WDW

We sat a bit at a table in front of Jolly Holiday Bakery. There we were able to see a bit of the parade that was going down mainstreet at that time. (although, honestly not very well and for not very long..so no pics and I don't even know the name)

Next we decided to go on BTMRR. Steve was starting to feel a bit ooky though so sat on a bench. The boys sat behind Zoe and I so I snapped a quic picture of them.

Off the ride, we found Steve was dying. Okay, not literally... but he was done for the night and wanted to go back to the hotel. So off he went.

Meanwhile, the kids and I rode BTMRR 2 more times before deciding we had enough and needed to try to do something else (for some reason there never seemed to be a line for this ride)

One ride I had been looking forward to was the Matterhorn. I knew that the seats had recently been changed. In my opinion a much needed thing. I mean... who wants to get all close up and personal with a stranger? before, you would sit with your rear in between someones legs... then they cram someone else in front of you..only causing you to sit even closer to your new best friend... until yes, you are sitting right up against their.. well, between their legs. Not my favorite way to ride a ride.

The new improved seats..

As we rode, the fireworks started going off. It was amazing!!! We rode both sides (yes, there are two tracks to this mountain - but I could not tell you wich is faster. I do believe the blue side was more bumpy and made my teeth chatter)

After 2 rides on the Matterhorn, this is what Zoe looked like

We then were near the Tea Cups and Zoe wanted to go on, as did Alex. Zach did not.. nor did I. However, when I suggested that Zach and I just walk through the line with them someone taunted Zach. "oh, poor baby gonna cry if you go on the tea cups?" Yeah... didn't go over to well with Zach and it was "on". He MADE me go and then proceeded to show how much NOT a baby he was. He spun that so hard I had to lay down. This upset Zoe so much she was crying. I guess one should not tell their evil boy that if they spin a tea cup too fast they will kill their old mother when one is within earshot of their youngest. She thought I was dying. (literally) and she kept screaming "my mama" "my mama" "your hurting my mama" I had to reach out my hand to her (as I was laughing) telling her I was fine. When I asked her if she was ok (afterall, unlike me who was laughing she was crying) She replied with a "I am not ok, because your not ok" (what a dear child) I finally was able to convince her I was not dying. Man was I ever dizzy though. I could barely stand when the ride was over. DARN my EVIL boy!

And... a picture of the tea cups just to show the difference. It is open, ie no roof, unlike in WDW

At this point we separated again and I have no idea what the boys did. I took Zoe on the Alice in Wonderland ride. This one is a bit scary... but fun.

We had a bit of a wait

"off with her head" the red queen yells

With that we decided to start on our way out. However as we passed through tommorowland, we saw that Star Tours has no wait. We hoped on. I love that there are different versions to this ride. I have never really got different versions though..always the same. This time though, we were transported to the Wookie planet and Aldaron (sp?)

After this we were back to the hotel in minutes (where yes, Steve was OUT) The boys arrived about the same time we did.

Running Tally HERE

Sounds like y'all were having a great night! Except for Steve - sorry to hear he wasn't feeling well.

But, y'all got a lot of rides done! Since I've never been to Disneyland, I've obviously never ridden the Matterhorn. But, that original seat set up sounds horrid! The new ones look much better!

I think nighttime pictures of the Tea Cups at Disneyland just look beautiful. I love the lanterns! That is too funny about the Tea Cups! Poor Zoe! She's such a sweet baby, trying to protect her Mama. She reminds me of Reid - tender hearted.

I'm super excited to hear about Carsland!!

All caught up. Fortunately I wasn't too far behind.

I LOVE guacamole and if I ever go to DL I think I must go to that restaurant and have it prepared tableside. I would die and go to heaven. What a great birthday meal.

What a fun evening in the parks. That Alice in Wonderland ride looks so cool and so does the Matterhorn. Great updates!
