Disney and School

Hey everyone! I have a question for y'all. I'm a teacher and at our school we do clubs every other Friday. I am hosting a club this year and I've picked Disney at my topic. So my plan was to start out talking about Walt Disney and study him a little, then talk about Disney World and Land and talk about it's history, rides, etc.

I wanted to work in different current events/holidays, as well. So, in November, I planned to talk about the presidents that have visited, along with the Hall of Presidents attraction and the America Pavilion. During December, we can discuss the different ways Disney celebrates the holidays, movies, etc.

Do y'all have any other suggestions?

I was thinking at some point, we could discuss the whole good versus evil. The good guys and the villains. Different character traits - the brave characters, the ones that faced challenges, etc.

Just wondered if anyone had any fabulous ideas or knew of any books that would be beneficial. Somewhere we have a dictionary of Disney characters, but I can't find it. I do have abook about all the attractions, I think. That would be fun to go through. I'll probably have around 20 kids - boys and girls, I hope.

I would love to incorporate a craft once in a while, too.

Sounds like a lot of fun and very educational. I would definitely teach the story of Thanksgiving, and all the countries of Epcot and the science behind lots of rides in Epcot, and maybe you could cover DLP and throw some French culture ,history differences in there.

what's DLP? We've done so much at other times about Thanksgiving, so I'm not sure we'll get to that. We will only meet twice in November and I think the first time we'll talk about the presidents (since it'll be election month) and then the second time will be after my trip to Disney - so I think I'll try to find thinks to report back to them. Maybe come up with a list of things they want me to find out or investigate and then report back. I may have to take a picture of them all together and then print it out and take it with me and take photos - sort of like Flat Stanley, but my class instead. hmmm, wheels keep turning!!

Sounds like a lot of fun. It would be interesting for the students to learn about Walt's failures before his success. Talking about his visions and perseverance would be inspiring too. Learning about cartooning and the early Mortimer Mouse could be included too.

yep - it's so important, to me, to let them know everything wasn't just easy for him. i think they assume too many times that people don't have to work hard at something. so i'm glad i can help teach that lesson in a fun way!

Maybe you could do an animation class at HS & then try to recreate the drawing with the kids, for a craft. Also, maybe end of year Mickey tie dyes or spray bleach shirts. Hidden Mickey picture examples could be another thing you could bring back & share. You could do another topic of learning from your past & experiences with differences between DL & WDW. December could be gingerbread & pictures of the creations at WDW. I could go on & on.....

Hidden mickeys would be great!! I thought about doing some animation too. We bought a book on how to draw characters after doing it in HS.

Contact Disney. I use to be a science teacher and they had some great free resources. They have an entire education program. Look up Disney youth programs. These are actual classes they offer on site. But they have so much more for teachers when I taught school. They even did a year of the teacher with free admission to Epcot for the entire year.
