I wouldn't cruise without a balcony because I need someplace to go with my coffee and book and camera when I wake up early. I wouldn't love having to climb over the Murphy bed to get out there. COULD you even get out there?

Looks like an awesome welcome basket with actually useful stuff.

Crab Legs on the buffet sound like a great idea, but I know what you mean about time consuming. When we ate at the Cape May, we spent so much time helping Ben with his seafood that the boys were onto dessert and ready to go while Mark and I were still trying to enjoy dinner.

Bummer about the inside sail away party.
The split bathroom was awesome! I'm not 100% sure that we wouldn't have been better off with 2 lower category adjoining rooms so we could have 2 bathrooms but that's a discussion for another day.
I was able to walk past the end of the Murphy bed and get to the balcony.
The welcome basket was amazing! It was very useful stuff with no "junk." 2 travel coffee mugs, 3 refillable water bottles, a magnetic dry erase board for our door, a portable fan, highlighters, etc.
You totally understand the seafood issue!
I was very sad about the party being indoors.

The Murphy bed was a twin. And, yes, I could just get past the end without waking up Jessica.

That looks like a really nice room. It's amazing how they can fit in such tight quarters.
I get the crab legs too.
To bad you had lousy weather for the party-bummer!

I was disappointed about the sail-away party but what can you do? The room was really nice.

Bon Voyage! Part 3

Our bags were starting to arrive in the room and so Tom took the 2 older kids to the pool while Zachary and I unpacked. Or I unpacked and Zachary watched tv. We had to go to the Muster Drill so I knew we wouldn't have too much time. I guess I was just stupid because I waited until they called the Muster Drill to go. Zachary and I were 2 of the last people at our Muster Station. Oops! It would have been totally fine because Tom and the other 2 were there early and they did roll call by room. Our room had already been called by the time I got there. Lesson learned!!! Apparently my older 2 kids were really upset that we weren't there. They did see us arrive and felt much better. Worst Mom in the World Award!
And I guess I'm stupid because I just re-read my notes and the Muster Drill was before the Sail-away Party. Oops! Forgive me???
After we wandered the ship we ended up back in the Atrium where there was a lovely Jazz Trio. We really enjoyed that.
Right off the lobby was a throne. There were 2 little girls playing in the vicinity of the throne. Zachary really wanted a turn in the throne so he said something to me. The girls overheard him and immediately ran back to the throne to prevent him from having a turn. He needed to go potty anyway so I told him we'd come back to the throne. When we came back, the girls were still playing and fighting with each other. Their mother was sitting at the nearby bar having a drink. When one of the girls came to tattle on the other, she told them to shut up. And kept drinking. Finally she yelled at them to give Zachary a turn. But it was a long while. I was a little horrified. I'm not saying I'm the best mom ever but I would have made my children give a turn to someone else much sooner. And I would have gotten up to make it happen.

It was finally time for dinner so we headed to the Enchanted Garden for our first night. We were escorted to our table and discovered that we were to have table-mates. I was a little worried that our children wouldn't behave but I hoped our table mates were nice. The waiter had written our children's names on their water cups. Except that Tom's last name has 13 letters so the names were cut off. We had Natha, Sacha (they changed the Z to an S - and it's particularly funny because my nephew is Sacha), and Jessi (which isn't terrible). And they had mixed the children from the other family with our children. We got it straightened out but it was a pretty good indication that our service wasn't as "perfect" as what I've heard about on the cruise ships. I liked our server. Our assistant server was nice enough but not spectacular at all.
I will say that the food was good. Our assistant server took drink orders and knew little to nothing about the drink menu. It was a little frustrating. I usually drank a glass of wine and I know enough to manage on my own. Tom wanted whiskey but wanted to make sure it wasn't outrageously expensive. Not only didn't he know what brands they carried, he had to find out the prices. I don't mean to over-react to the situation but every night there was a drink issue.
Also I'd read about other assistant servers having the children's drinks waiting for them every night. Nope. And sometimes the drink service was particularly slow. Again, it didn't ruin the trip but I did hope for better.
My children were also not particularly well-behaved at dinner. I had to take both Nathaniel and Zachary out of the restaurant at various points in time for behavior issues. A little disappointing.
The restaurant was beautiful and the food was good. Our table mates were lovely - a DISer mom with 2 daughters (one Nathaniel's age - and they became good friends - and one a little older).
After dinner we took the kids to the kids club. I don't think they were there an hour before Nathaniel called to be picked up. And as soon as Zachary saw me, he wanted to leave, too. Jessica, on the other hand, was willing to live at the kids club. We took the boys back to the room (where they fought) and let them order room service cookies and milk. I finally went and picked up Jessica. There was quite a bit of fighting at bedtime but we were all finally asleep.
I will note that Tropical Storm Debby was in the area and made the seas a bit rougher than I was expecting. Nobody got sea sick but I won't lie and say I didn't feel the motion.

Sounds like you are not off to a totally smooth sailing start.

From what I have experienced and read about the Muster Drill, it is probably good that Zachary wasn't there for the whole time. Certainly not the most enjoyable of experiences on a cruise ship.

Sorry to hear about the girls who were hogging the throne and the mom who was not really attentive to that. What a shame when parents go on vacation, and then take a vacation from parenting!

Sorry to hear you experienced drink service issues throughout the cruise. When Mark and I were on our first cruise, about 20 years ago, everyone at the table ordered coffee with dessert. Most of the table ordered regular coffee, but one of the couples specified decaf every night. The assistant server must have been using a magic carafe because he poured everyone's coffee from the same pot!

Too bad that Nathaniel wasn't loving the kids club on the first night. I hope that gets better and he spends some more time there. He has to for Palo, anyway, right?

Doesnt sound like the best start to a holiday! One of the things you've mentioned is was really puts me off cruising (well that and not being able to swim to shore at any given point) and thats having to dine with others. I just dont think it would suit my family. We like our evening meal to be our winding down time together and while we may choose to eat alongside others sometimes I would hate not being in control of it (especially with kids who seem to pick those very times to act up).
Also hate when other parents dont actually parent their kids

Hope things improved for you all. I laughed when I read about Jessica and the kids clubs as we once resorted to bribery to get my daughter to join us for a swim on holiday when she was that age because she loved the "club" so much! Now if only the youngest could be persuaded to go to one for an evening-but no chance!

Wow what a rough start.
I would have been scared to death if other people were sitting with us at dinner. Dinner is not always enjoyable with DS11.
To bad about the kids club My Kids want to go on a cruise just because of what they've heard about the club. We'll see if we ever go on one.
Hope your next day was a lot more magical.

Castaway Cay 1

So before I move on to Monday, I forgot to post a few pictures from Sunday night.

Here's the room with the beds in place. No, Tom didn't sleep on the bottom bunk. We had also ordered milk and cookies from room service. Room service was FREE.

A turtle towel animal was waiting for us.

I woke up quite early on Monday morning and sat on the verandah while the ship pulled into dock at Castaway Cay. It was an overcast and windy day. In fact all of the boating activities on Castaway were canceled due to high winds.
Two of the podcasters had organized a special DISboards 5k walk and I thought my family should participate. Another mis-calculation on my part. We arrived at the meeting point and everyone (mostly adults) stood around talking for well over 30 minutes before walking. It was super hot and humid and we ended up leaving at the beginning of the walk.

Tom wearing his DIS credentials.

At this point Tom was already pretty fried so he took Jessica and Zachary to the pool. This issue with this is that both kids wanted to ride the AquaDuck but they each needed to ride with Tom. Obviously he couldn't leave Zachary unattended. I think he rode once with Zachary and Jessica didn't get to go. I think they had fun.
Nathaniel LOVES the beach. So I took him to Castaway Cay. Do you know how easy it is to watch ONE 8 year old? What a pleasure!!! The issue was that it was SUPER windy. We rented tubes but I had to really hold Nathaniel's tube or he blew all the way down the beach. The counter-service station on the Island was great. It's so nice to go to the beach and not bring anything. I mean we brought sunscreen, a waterproof camera, and a bottle of water. They had towels and food there.

Fruit art!

This was like a playground out in the water.

All the watercraft were on the shore.

We headed back to the ship in the early-mid afternoon. I think both Nathaniel and I enjoyed our time on Castaway.

Castaway Cay 1 (continued)

We went back to the room and everyone got cleaned up. I think this was the afternoon where there was a cooking demonstration. The pastry chef for the ship gave the talk. Nathaniel and Tom loved it but the little kids were bored. Jessica ended up back at the kids club. When we retrieved her for dinner, this is what we found:

At least one child was having fun!
Dinner was a repeat of the previous night. Mediocre drink service. Good food. Bad behavior by my kids. I'm exaggerating of course but I was a little frustrated by the behavior.
I don't remember this night so it was probably uneventful except for the typical bedtime drama.

Sounds like a fairly laid back day!

How nice to have some onene time with Nathaniel at Castaway Cay. The beach can be really stressful with little ones, so I'm sure this was really nice for you. I'm starting to get into the groove with my boys (age 14 and 11) where I can actually SIT in the CHAIR I bring to the beach

Are you a beach lover?

It really does look like Tom has lost some weight when I look at that picture of him standing.

Sorry your dining experience was similar to the previous night's.

I have only seen a couple of pics of Tom and he has definitely lost some weight!! Good for him. My DH can definitely relate. He just lost almost 30 lbs. and it has been a LOT of work!
I love Castaway Cay pics. That's one of the reasons I want to do a Disney cruise. I thought there was like a huge water slide there too in the middle
Looks like a lot of fun! Only having to watch one kid- that's awesome!!

I love one-on-one time with any of the kids! It's definitely rare and special.
I wouldn't call myself a beach lover but I'm fine with the beach. Tom is a hater.
Tom has lost weight. Thanks!

Jessica is a "joiner." She'll sign up for 1,000 activities if we allowed it!
Nathaniel is certainly a mommy's boy!

I love Castaway Cay pics. That's one of the reasons I want to do a Disney cruise. I thought there was like a huge water slide there too in the middle
Looks like a lot of fun! Only having to watch one kid- that's awesome!!
The other family beach has a water slide.
Watching one kid is heavenly!
Losing weight, well, sucks.

Nassau

The ship pulled into Nassau on Tuesday morning.

The weather was very overcast with some thunderstorms early and late. I had thought about doing a walking tour of Nassau and maybe going to the Pirate Museum but we decided to just stay on board. We carefully read the Navigator and found a bunch of activities for the whole family.

I guess I didn't mention it but we also really enjoyed going for sit-down breakfast at the restaurants. I've always found buffets annoying - I go up and get food for all 3 kids, get them settled and eating, and then try to get my food. By the time I'm ready to eat the kids need something else. The coffee in the restaurants was better than the coffee at the buffet and the kids enjoyed the Mickey waffles. Zachary still asks for Mickey waffles every weekend!!!

They had an "Open House" activity at the kids club. It was a "mad science" type of thing (can't remember the real name). At Open House they closed 1/2 of the club (either the Lab or the Club was closed off) so the kids who were dropped off weren't hanging out with "strange" adults. This class took place in the eating area which connected the 2 clubs. I arrived late because I went to the fitness center for a run. The Open House worked great for our family because we didn't deal with any separation anxiety issues.

Again with the face paint!

The class was very silly and fun and a good way to spend time together as a family!
