A very magical morning at the MK. Selected Family of the Day 6/8/12! Pictures incl.

Here's how our magical morning went. We woke up and headed to our bus at Pop at about 7:20. We had the customary wait and the half full bus. I kinda knew with the crowd that there was really no chance for a FOTD, but we always like to go to the MK early anyways just to feel the vibe. We got to the turnstiles at about 8:00am to find every turnstile taken with at least one person in line except for one. With that, I put any hope of even trying for FOTD out of my mind and headed to the one remaining turnstile and proceeded to sit down, open up my lines app on my smartphone and wait for the turnstiles to open. By now, the line behind us had started to form.

My darling wife, who doesn't read the Dis and has only a vague notion of many of my "insider" tips, was still just being her normal chatty self. She talks to everyone she meets and happened to chat up one of the cast members in the turnstile right next to us. She happened to mention how I always hope to one day luck up into the FOTD thing for my son, just more as a conversation point than anything because by now it's 10 after 8:00 and they most certainly picked that lucky family long ago. Well in true Disney magic, she happened to be talking to the very Cast Member who gets to allot that magic in the wrong place and at the wrong time.

The CM showed my wife a tiny slip of paper with Family of the Day written on it and she sarts excitedly blathering to me at how we just got picked. Now being the one who does ALL the research and tries to know all the tips, I told her there is no way that this could be true and we were getting our leg pulled. But I got up from my seat to go along with the gag and the very next thing I know, we are getting our tickets scanned through the turnstiles at 8:10am and beyond all my craziest hopes we are actually being picked as FAMILY OF THE DAY!!!!!

We were escorted over to the magical bench I had wistfully watched other families sit at before. at this point, I'm still thinking that this cannot possibly be true. They will find out that they made a mistake and that they picked a different, more deserving family many minutes before. that family must be off on their magical morning tour and somehow the wires got crossed and they picked a second family and that's us.

But then Barbara showed up. Barbara is one of the main street vehicle drivers and she was the bringer of the magic for us. She took us back to town square and led us to the parked fire engine. She let us take several pictures with my son in the drivers seat and us inside. then she told us to yell really loud for the driver to come out. We did and our driver turned out to be............Barbara!

She hopped in and drove us up a (mostly) deserted main street where we met the Mayor for the first time and had our picture taken with him and the fire engine right on main street.

She then took us up and parked right in front of the castle with the fire engine and proceeded to turn into a super photographer as she got priceless pictures of us with the statue in the hub, the topiaries near tomorrowland, and other great shots involving the castle, the fire engine, both, and each other.

We then hopped back aboard the engine for a drive back down main street to the train station as it was now 40 after 8. Along the way we sang Barbara's favorite song "If you are happy and you know it." as loud and as off-key as we could muster while waving at all the early dining ADR folks and laughing out loud. We even sang Zipidee Doo-dah on the way up the train station stairs.

Up there, we met the mayor again along with the dancers for the morning welcome show and the manager for the show. We got a couple more priceless pictures with the Mayor and all the dancers and got to witness the show from the door right out into the train station.

When the train pulled up, we walked across and got to be in the one spot I've always dreamed of bringing my son to. we were right there atop the train station during the opening song with Mickey to our right and the Mayor to our left. It all went soo fast and the next thing I knew we were counting down and the park officially opened.

We went back across the train and down the stairs where we met our personal photopass photographer for the opening show and got a photopass card and a voucher for a free 8x10 photo. Barbara also handed us a set of anytime fastpasses to use and we got another set of pictures with the Mayor on the stairs and at the double-decker bus, which Barbara was driving for the first run down Main Street of the day.

We hopped aboard and rode down to the Castle again, this time in a bustling park and had one last set of pictures with the bus and I made it a point to include one more with my son and Barbara, our bringer of Magic. It was such a sweet and special thing to have happen to us on our last MK day of this trip.

The neatest thing was even though I knew about it, I had pretty much decided that it wasn't going to happen and that we were perfectly content to enjoy our morning. It's just proof that Magic can strike at anytime, even when you don't think to look for it anymore.

Such a cool and priceless day!

This is amazing for you, congratulations!

My family and I were picked many years ago to be the openers of the daytime parade. Very similar experience, and still so magical in my mind.

Cherish those memories!

That's wonderful! I'm so happy for you. We were picked two years ago, we had no idea what to expect at all & were so surprised with everything. It is a very magical experience. I totally cried & hugged Barbara at the end of it.
