Joining the PTR bandwagon! It sounds like you have a wonderful trip planned.

I've stayed at the Century Southern and it is a wonderful hotel. THE VIEW IS FABULOUS!!! Yes, Shinjuku station is HUGE, but it has excellent signage and I believe all signs were in English. If you go out the door that connects to the pedestrian mall (near Krispy Kreme), turn left and you can't miss the station entrance. You can use the trains that passes through this platform to get just about anywhere in Tokyo.

If you want to see Mt. Fuji, I would suggest a trip out to Hakone. The train to Hakone leaves from Shinjuku station as well (different platform, though). Even if Mt. Fuji isn't visible the entire time you're in Tokyo, a trip to Hakone is still worth the effort!

Hope to read an update soon

I'm jealous. It seems you're doing the trip I was hoping to be able to do (well....in a different month)!

Right now, I'm just trying to fit in a trip to Japan before we leave this hemisphere. DH was resistant. I finally convinced him, but now his boss is reluctant to give him the time off! He has 30 days of leave accumulated (a whole year's worth) so he definitely NEEDS a holiday!

Nikko ends up being about the same amount of travel time as to Kyoto, because the trains don't seem to be as fast. It costs less though, which is why I'm considering Nikko over Kyoto. Time AND budget constraints - eck!

If we do get to go on our trip, we'll be doing so a week or two before yours! Luckily, I've been tentatively planning this trip for over a year, but none of that has been learning Japanese, so I'll be in the same boat as you!

That sucks I hope he gets the time off.

Just checking the exchange rate, the AU$ is sitting at 80.1672 yen, which is really good, but unfortunately my bank is still only offering it at 75...

Man I hate that. They make enough money off the commission they take, why can't they sell and buy it at the price that it is?!?

July 20th Day Play

Hey, just saw that you have Disney Land/Sea planned for the 20th of July. I hope I'm not impending on your plans here, but prepare for a VERY busy day at Disney that day. It's a national holiday that day, called "umi no hi", or, in English, Marine Day. It's the first day of summer in Japan, and all of the school children will be out of school (I believe, I haven't lived in Japan for years). So expect record crowds for summer that day. Not only Disney, but anything "teens" would want to do that day will be crowded...

Seriously? Does that mean both the 16th and the 20th are holidays?

I wish we had more random holidays scattered throughout the year

I don't think so. Marine Day used to be fixed on July 20th, but now it is the third Monday of July, which this year is July 16.

Less then 3 weeks to go now!

Every time I research things to do in Tokyo there's always some mention of the Park Hyatt and that the movie Lost in Translation was filmed there. So I added it to our "Movies to watch" list.

Last night DH and I watched it, and I can now officially say that it was a waste of 100 minutes!! There's a few parts where the movie is interesting, but nothing happens! I am so disappointed because I thought it was going to be one of those movies that would get us really excited for our trip, and something we could watch when we got back to remind us of the places we saw, but no, it was so boring, and all DH and I could say was "I hope Tokyo isn't as boring as this movie makes it look!"

So now if anyone has any recommendations of any good movies that are set in Japan I'd be happy to hear about it

I didn't like Lost in Translation either- I remember little about it other than that it was very disappointing. Glad I'm not the only one.

Can't think of good movies set in Japan off the top of my head. I've enjoyed episodes of Amazing Race where they've gone to Japan.

Just reminding you - I am reading along intently - remember lots of food porn - with prices !! Please!

I have been looking at airfare today - we can fly Jetstar for $3765 for our family - (no meals, no points, stopover in Cairns or Gold Coast, no bags and we would have to leave Sydney at the ungodly hour of 6:00am - which means leaving home around 4:00am (and either one less day of holiday or 1 more day off school)

So I am still holding out for Qantas - have a budget of around $1k pp and should be able to use Points + pay for a bit of a discount!

Jetstar had a special about a month ago... GC to Narita $209 one way! (in Nov/Dec) That's a great price. You aren't going until 2013 are you? You have heaps of time. They should start coming out soon.
