The Governor's office and more of Juneau

The next thing we saw was the Governor's office. The entire floor is dedicated to the Governor on one side and the Lieutenant Governor on the other.

State Seal

Conference Room

The doors to the Governor's office had these really amazing Native American carvings.

All of the Governor's are on this wall. The state is pretty young, so there aren't very many. And that girl is our tour guide. She is a Native Alaskan, but she is currently attending school at ASU, Arizona State for those who are unfamiliar, and works in the Capitol Building on her summer breaks.

The current Governor was Lieutenant Governor under Sarah Palin, who is the only Alaskan politician I have ever heard of.

This is a metal sculpture, cut from an actual piece of pipe that had been used as part of the alaska pipeline. The weld mark on the pipe is a rough representation of where the actual pipe runs in the state.

Me trying to take the picture of the plaque that says what I just told you, but it didn't work out very well... it does make for a funny picture, though!

State Senate.

She took us right into the press area. It was very cool.

I don't remember who this guy was, but he must have been important.... I'll have to look into that.

Ahh... just look at the next photo, it tells us that man is Ted Stevens.

This room was very old, it had some of the oldest original architecture and decoration in the building. It was the original Senate Chambers.

This is a bridge that joins the Capitol Building with the building I had photographed prior to that. There are many people who have a need to go back and forth between the two buildings so they built this bridge that is temperature controlled and makes for crossing the street in the snow very simple.

The front pages of the biggest newspapers in Alaska celebreating their newfound statehood.

After touring the Capitol, we wanted to see the Governor's house. It was within walking distance, so we headed on our way. We passed this museum which had some totem poles out front.

Next up: The Governor's house, lunch, and Mt Robert's Tramway

Governor's house, lunch, and Mt. Robert's Tramway

Just to clear up any possible confusion, Alaska was named a state in June, but this flag ceremony took place in July. This plaque is for the flag ceremony, not the statehood.

And the Governor's Mansion! I thought it was super cute.

The house was built for the Governor's they had before they were a state, back when they were still a territory. I think the house looks great for it's age.

Me at the Governor's Mansion

Here I'm thinking, there should be a pool here. But then Chris pointed out it would be pretty useless for much of the year. Oh well. Maybe they have one in the basement.

The house sits on top of a hill from which the Wonder is visible.

Omnious looking weather.

Sea planes I'm sure some of our shipmates rode on that day.

Walking along the pretty water back towards the ship for lunch.

We went back to the ship for lunch. We perused around some of the places on the pier selling chowders and such, but the prices were pretty crazy. Like $20 a plate crazy for window service food. It wouldn't have been a big deal, except I'm kinda new to eating fish and I'd hate to pay that much for something I might hate. And I have hated some seafood. Mostly crab. And they had a lot of crab here and not much else. so the ship was the best bet for us. I am now learning the lesson that I should take pictures of the menus as well so I can tell you what I am eating...

Chris started with a ravioli. I want to say it was a seafood ravioli, maybe lobster?

I had Chicken Tortilla soup. It was good, but it was not like any tortilla soup I had eaten before. It was more like a well seasoned tomato soup. And I'm not sure why it would come with a pita bread

Next I had some sort of caprese salad with an italian lunch meat on it. Prosciutto?

Chris had a chowder.

I enjoyed this shrimp dish. I really love shrimp!

Chris had this orchiette pasta with clams, except those two clams you see are the only clams that come on it, and one of the shells was empty...

We skipped dessert. After lunch we went back to the Mt. Roberts Tramway. This is the giant wheel that send the trams up and down.

Going up. There were a few other ships in port that day.

That's the touristy area we had been walking around all morning.

Getting higher. Chris is taking all of these pictures, by the way, as I hang on for dear life in the center of the tram, looking at the floor. Unreasonable fear, I know.

The other tram going down.

Top of Juneau and Pirates!

The Wonder looks like a toy from here

Across the water to the other side of Juneau.

Where we came in from.

An eagle!

Ok, we're off now and the tram is going back down full of people. More importantly, I'm on solid ground.

Scenery is amazing up here!

They had this eagle captive because she had been injured and can no longer fly.

They have some nature trails at the top, bit they were all closed due to the snowfall. Maybe next time. Saw this guy though.

We watched the movie about the local tribal history and then we came down. Happy to be back on the ground and near my ship.

We also explored the Taku fish place. It was like a butcher and deli in one. They had samples of all the fish varieties they sell. I was not feeling it. They have a cool area where you walk past all these windows that view the smoking and packing areas. It was really neat, I recommend anyone at least stop in there.

When we got back on the ship we relaxed in our room for a while watching tv. Before we knew it, it was time for dinner. And tonight was to be pirate night. I had heard people go all out, and there were some fully dressed up pirates at dinner, but I felt like it was out of place on the Alaska cruise. I also felt like it was a little strange to be in Triton's on pirate night. No biggie, though. I'll plan outfits for us when we go on a Caribbean Disney cruise.
My hardcore pirate.

And me, not realizing until I saw these pictures later just how pointy that scarf made my head look.

Arr...

Just got caught up with Juneau! Man, those are some great pictures from your camera! Haha I definitely don't think your fear is unreasonable. I have this weird fear of getting on the ferris wheel over at Disney's California Adventure (one that you may or may not ride when you come in a few weeks! ) but I don't like the feeling of being 'enclosed' right near water. I have no problems with heights or ferris wheels, but have a fear of being unable to save myself if something happened like if the ferris wheel fell into the water where they show the World of Color show (which I really hope you see!).

Hope you survived the awful flooding that happened in Vegas yesterday!! Holy cow! I have a friend that lives in Vegas and she was posting pictures on her facebook of all the places that were flooded, and it was crazy!

I just have a fear of ferris wheels. Not sure why... I'm ok if no one is going to rock the car, but I really hate those moving cars on the Mickey Sunwheel... we didn't ride it this time. Ironically, I love the Zipper at carnivals. We didn't get to see World of Color because we had tickets for the White Sox at Angels Friday and Saturday night. Next time, along with the rides in Cars Land because I was not down for waiting over an hour.

I was at school the day of the flooding. It was crazy, I went to class and it was sunny, I came out of class and it was cloudy, then I went in a computer lab to work on some "homework" (probably disboards ) and the loudest thunder I've ever heard happened. Everyone in the lab got really quiet and then someone asked, was that thunder? Someone else responded, I sure hope so. I think people might have thought we'd been bombed or something, it was that loud.

This is the amphitheater right outside the building where I was.

And this is it filled with rain water just a few minutes later.

We rarely get rain, so there were a bunch of people out playing in it. And a streaker on campus. I just went back in my lab and continued my work until my next class, by which time the sun had come back out, and everything had drained pretty nicely. I'm glad I was on campus that day though because people here go crazy when it rains and forget how to drive. There were tons of car accidents that day and traffic was horrible.

Correction!

I do have a minor correction to make. In the post from Juneau where Chris and I go back to the ship for lunch, his soup is not a chowder, it was a pina colada soup. That was toasted coconut on top. After he read my post, he was "What?! That's the coconut soup!" I haven't been able to convince him to make his own dis account, so I had to relay that info to you. Here's the photo again so you know what I'm talking about.

And I should ahve another update on the way today! Stay tuned!

More random food and stuff

Jack N Grill Denver, CO Menu As seen on Man vs Food
Belen breakfast burrito (not listed on above menu, it is on a breakfast only menu they have in the restaurant, but it has potatoes, chorizo, eggs, and green chile, smothered in cheese and new mexican green chile, so good!)

Duffeyroll's Denver, COMenu
All the Duffeyrolls, mini sized: The Original • Zesty Orange • Irish Cream • Mountain Maple • English Toffee • Pecanilla Crunch

Denver Biscuit Company Denver, CO Menu
The Franklin

Biscuit with Scrambled Egg and Sausage Gravy

The Space Shuttle Endeaver flying over Disney's California Adventure, probably the best part of our Disney trip! Words cannot describe the feeling.

A photo from the White Sox @ Angel's game (DH is a Sox fan)

Regular and Pumpkin Beignets from the Mint Julep bar in Disneyland park, the regular ones have less sugar on them, the pumpkin ones have more.

I thought this was a cool view of the castle.

That's all the randomness I have to share with you for now. I'll be back soon with a cruise update!

I wasn't that into the Duffeyrolls, although I really liked the Irish creme one, but I loved Jack N Grill! We had breakfast there twice on this past trip and once the time before that. I need to be more adventurous, I've ordered the Belen breakfast burrito every time.... It's just so good I can't bring myself to prder anything else.

Oh wow crazy pics! Lol a streaker?! I guess lots of rain brings out the crazy in people.

OKAY! Food overload!!! I wish I could eat even one bite of anything that you posted. Food is not my friend right now.

Those first two pictures of the pizza - did you make those yourself? Do you make your own dough? If so, do you mind sharing your recipe??? I only use the store bought pizza dough, but i'm sure homemade would blow it out of the water. Margharita is my FAVORITE pizza ever!

Are you going to do a mini update on Disneyland at all? That is so cool that you got to see the shuttle fly over Disneyland!

It's ok, if I didn't live here, I don't think I would ever want to vacation here. I'm not into gambling, and you can drink anywhere. There are buffets everywhere you turn, but I prefer my food scalding hot and it's pretty impossible for a heat lamp or warming table to keep food at that temp without overcooking it. There's some really great food to be had here, but most anything near the strip is ridiculously priced. That's why I love Diner's Drive Ins and Dives, because it allows me to find good food cheap when I travel. If you never come to Vegas, I don't blame you, I'd rather cruise and go to Disney anytime, but if you ever do come to town, let me know, I'll fill you in on all the good stuff =)

SPeaking of traveling, I know you're in SoCal, but you're still a bit away from Disney right? I'm just asking because we'll be going to Anaheim in the end of September to see the White Sox play the Angels and visit Cars land. Just wondering if you happened to have any food/ drink recommendations since everything in the area is some kind of chain, it's hard to find something different. I am really excited to try some of the new food places in DCA.
We love going to Vegas, but we tend to avoid the strip like the plague. We stay at Sam's Town and only go to the strip to try some of the destination restaurants. Every trip I get to pick some ridiculous restaurant to try where the bill is stoopid, but ever since we did the Chef's Table at V&A's I don't think that we'll ever top THAT bill. At least I hope we don't. We like to play Black Jack and even if we don't win, I enjoy the free drinks and we usually hover at a pretty good level that we don't lose too much money.

I'm sorry I didn't read this until now, I would have tried to give you some restaurant reccomendations. There is an awesome German restaurant just blocks away from Anaheim Stadium. So you were there for the shuttle fly-by? That's cool, we saw it about 10 minutes after you when it did it's Queen Mary fly by. We weren't there, just happened to be driving down the street, but we live close enough to the QM that we saw it turn around on it's way back to LAX.

I hope you did get to Trader Sam's on your trip, that's a great place to hang out. I hope you got to try some of the new places at DLR.

I enjoyed your food porn, but I just got home and am trying to come up with ideas for dinner. None of my freezer meals sound good after seeing all your awesome food, but I'll deal.

The reason I have had a hard time keeping up with your TR and I have this with a few other people is that you must be using a pretty good camera, and your image files must be huge. I have had to try and keep up from my phone a lot because at home, I'm so busy with all kinds of other stuff that I don't get to just enjoy TRs (I am self employed so a lot of DIS time is waiting at Doctors and other "waiting" places). Your photos are so big that your TRs crash my phone and I can't load the pages. When I have the DIS time at home if your thread doesn't show up on my UserCP, I sometimes forget to go look for it.

Don't think that as lack of interest, just lack of time. I've subscribed to way too many TRs for what's going on in my life so I have just have to catch up as I can. My TRs are suffering as well!

That Tram ride looked awesome! As I look at your photos, I realize that we didn't do much in any of the towns on our Alaska cruise because we did all the water plane, helicopter and glacier speed boat tours. We will have to go back and tour the towns for the local color!

Virgilio's was amazing! I would go back there in a second. It is in the extreme southwest corner of the Denver area, though. It was a 20 minute drive from the grandparents house in Centennial... But worth it I think.

I thought the streaking was a lil excessive, but people come to Vegas from all over and flunk out of UNLV all the time because they can't handle all the excitement that is Vegas. That person will probably be one of them.

I'm so sorry that you're not getting along with food right now. I hope things are better now that I've heard your lil man has made his appearance.

The pizzas I did make myself, as well as the dough. I have a KitchenAid mixer and the recipe is in the little book that came with it. link to dough recipe If you don't have a kitchenaid, the speeds are on a scale to 10, so speed 2 is like 20%. I used whole wheat flour in place of the all purpose flour. For me, I just use the 2½ cups that the recipe starts with, if I add any more, the dough becomes unmanagable. You may need to add more if you use the all purpose or if your elevation is really different It's so much better when the dough is homemade.

As for a Disneyland update, when we got to the CA-NV stateline, I realized I didn't pack the camera... So the pics I already uploaded are all I took with my cell phone. In the end, all I really care about is that I got a decent pic of the shuttle. It was amazing!

I love Sam's Town. That's where we had our wedding reception. I figured it was so perfectly historical old west themed that all my family from NY would really enjoy it. We pretty much avoid the casinos and don't gamble. We do normally do a fancy strip restaurant for special occassions. I really want to try V&A sometime, but I'm not sure I can stomach that bill yet...

The shuttle was amazing! I'm so glad you got to see it to. We didn't know it was going to be there until we got there, they had signs telling you at the entrance to the parks. As for food, we just did the Mimi's by the park and park food. We were with another couple so we didn't do any exploring, which means we also didn't get to Trader Sam's... next time. We may pop down again in Dec, we'll see.

Sorry if I ruined your dinner that night I had just been acquiring all these food shots on my phone, and I really wanted to share them. As for my camera, it's pretty much the "fanciest" you can get before making the jump to a DSLR, which I really want for amazing photos sake, but not to carry around... Sorry I'm taking up so much space that you can't see my updates. I know you're there

I'm just writing this really quickly before my appointment to have someone at UNLV Career Services check out my resume, which is in 10 minutes. There's a career fair next Tuesday and I want my resume to be in good shape before I go handing it out to tons of prospective employers. I don't know if I've shared this before, but I'm graduating in Dec with a Bachelor's of Arts in Spanish. It took me so long because I was a French major, but there were so few classes offered I changed to Spanish to graduate quicker. I chose foreign language so I could teach high school. I ditched class a lot in the beginning, and got poor grades because of it, so I repeated a ton of classes to raise my GPA to so I could meet the minimum to get into the college of education. Well, I finally got within the required range, and the eliminated my program.... not that there's no more education program, but because of budget cuts they now only teach aspiring English, Math, and Science teachers. So I have done everything except my student teaching, and now I can't. So I'm just going to graduate and think about my next step. Master's, second Bachelor's, or just go for a different career. We'll see what happens.

We like Sam's town because it's cheap, the prices aren't jacked up like the strip and I enjoy the little "park" in the center. Fran really likes Willy and Jose's for a Mexican dinner and we can entertain our selves for a long time at the cheap Black Jack tables. We don't play for the "gambling" part, just the fun of playing cards, but if we win some money, that's always a bonus. Most of the time we break even, but it's more the skill and luck part that we get into.

V&A's won't set you back too far if you stick with the main dining room. It was the Chef's Table that really knocked our budget out of the park, but it was our 10 year anniversary so we figured we deserved it.

You need to go back and go to Trader Sam's, be sure to sit inside and order some of the Signature drinks, it's really fun. You can probably make a dinner out of it if you order enough of the appetizers, we've done it a couple times, once inside, once out. Maybe next time you go I can come down and we can meet up for a drink.

Don't worry about the photos, there are at least 5-6 people who I'm following that I have that problem with. In fact today, I saw Alicia's pictures from my phone, but I couldn't read the text because I would have had to enlarge the posts so much and scroll back and forth to read each line, so I just enjoyed the Mommy and baby shots. I'll have to go back and read the text now that I'm home again.

Good luck at the career fair!
