It was HOT! The hottest day we've had in 2 years and we ran the race in kilts, lol. We didn't go for time, we just went for fun! They shot video of the beginning of the race with everyone charging over the crest of the hill in our kilts, bagpipes playing, it was awesome.

And the ice cold Scottish ale after the finish line was pretty good, too.

Hi everyone! I've been MIA busy lately, but I had to check in tonight. Tomorrow morning, I run my first race *ever!* It's the Salem Distance Run (10K) in Salem, VA - near MIL's where we are for the weekend. I'm feeling pretty good about it, although it looks like the course has some decent hills. Time to see how I do in a crowd!

I survived! I hadn't realized (although I should have) that the elevation of this race would be higher than what I'm used to by a decent amount (about 1000 feet), and oooof there were some hard hills! I started out great and ended up taking more walk breaks than I do at home toward the end (seriously - those hills!), but it all worked out just fine. I finished the 10K at an overall pace of a 10 1/2 minute mile. I'm really happy to have that first race in the books!

Great job Liz! I love 10ks. I think it is such a great distance.

Alice--glad the race was fun even though it was hot. I think we need a picture.

I think I read that Kaiti ran a 5k recently, too! Congratulations!

And I know Maria has the Providence 1/2 coming up next weekend.

****
I ran 12 miles today. My feet were getting a little sore by the end, but since that was the longest distance I have gone in these shoes, I am pretty happy. I came home got a shower and took a nap, which was great.

We are looking at adding a 1/2 in October. It's in Midway KY and Jeff Galloway is supposed to speak at the dinner the night before. I can't eat the dinner, so we are trying to find out if I can just make a donation and come hear him anyhow. I think the race has ~1200 people. I ran a 1/2 with only ~400 people once and that was too small. This one has a time limit of 14 minute miles, which to me kind of indicates a fast course, which I am not sure how I feel about that. It's only about 3 weeks before W&D. I am going to think about it.

I hope everyone is doing well. I would love to hear how everyone's training is going.

I am attempting to make the first page more user friendly.

If you have a race you would like to add, please include the date.
And please let me know if I have missed anything.

Thanks!

Hi, Ladies- Life is getting a little more normal for me so I'm going to refocus on my eating habits and training for the W/D and marathon. I managed 10 miles on Saturday -the furthest run I have done in quite a while and my calves and quads are sore- so I'm gonna plan for a light workout on the eliptical at the Y tonight.
Rose- you mentioned training up to 20 miles for the marathon- are you incorporating the training for the W/d into that or are you considering the W/d as a training run for the marathon- does that make any sense? I am hoping to finish the W/D around 2 hrs- if I can stay injury free. I hope to do the St. Augustine 1/2 marathon which is the week after the W/D . No races in my immediate future.

Hope you all have a good week.

Dottie

Dottie--my goal for w&d is under 2:15. It will be a pr for that race, but not an overall pr. I know that I will be slower at night, just cause. Having said that here is my training plan. I am looking at it as a race. I figure the amount of effort I will put into racing is about equal to what a slower longer run would be during that time. We are also looking at adding a race the second weekend in October (another half). I will not race hard for that one, cause of w&d. It really is a balancing act. I am doing 2 weekday runs of 50 minutes each and 2 additional cardio workouts a week (pool running or elliptical). I'm trying to work on speed during the weekday runs and we are adding a lot of hills to the long runs, which should help in FL since it is so flat.

So here is my long run plan:
8/18/2012 6
8/25/2012 6
9/1/2012 13
9/8/2012 6
9/15/2012 14
9/22/2012 Race 5k
9/29/2012 15
10/6/2012 6
10/13/2012 16
10/20/2012 6
10/27/2012 10
11/3/2012 6
11/10/2012 RACE 13.1
11/17/2012 6
11/24/2012 6
12/1/2012 18
12/8/2012 7
12/15/2012 20
12/22/2012 7
12/29/2012 6
1/5/2013 7

Alice, congrats on your race in the heat! Running in a kilt sounds hot but at least there was ice cold beer waiting!

Liz, congrats to you on your first race! You were speedy, speedy even with the hills!

Rose, that was a good idea putting the newer races up front on page 1 -- easier to keep track of for scream teamin' and good wishes. Thanks for keeping track of us!

I saw on Galloway's website that he is doing a running school at the KY event -- you don't actually run at running school and it is a small group so you get to ask lots of questions. You might want to look into it.

And a big woo hoo on 12 miles this week-end!

Dottie, nice to see you! Great job on the 10 miles!

I'm sure Rose will share what she is doing for marathon training and the W&D. For my ecoaching schedule Galloway has me doing long runs, 13 to 14 miles, every other week from the W&D though 3 weeks before the Donald. I know that doesn't help you for marathon training but it might help someone else. On the off weeks I do 800 speed repeats up to 10 repeats. Galloway says your endurance is equal to your longest run in the 3 weeks before any run. Give yourself plenty of time to taper in between races, especially if you are doing back to back halfs. You are so speedy you will have no problem at all with any of your races.

I've been plugging along. Had some challenges with runner's tummy during the summer but I am where I need to be with two long runs left before my half next month. I will be glad when cooler weather arrives even though it is nowhere near as hot and humid here as it is for some of you.

Rose, your schedule looks great. You and Dottie will be done with the W&D long before I am -- good thing the party lasts til 4 a.m.

Lisa--thanks for the heads up on the running class. I worry that we have too much of a taper before the marathon, but with our schedule that is what was going to work out.
How is the speed work going? I have been doing my own version of speed work on the treadmill--I run faster when the songs speed up and slow down when they slow down. Not very scientific, but keeps me from getting too bored.

Hi Ladies!!
I have been lurking for a few weeks, it's given me time to read through the entire thread. I love how supportive and encouraging this group is and hope its not too late to join in. I haven't run any races yet, hoping to run in the local " scare away brain cancer " in October, it's a 5k. Short background - I'm totally out of shape and overweight. I feel I am setting a horrible example for my kids. So we started C25K 3 weeks ago! We all run/walk together 3 days a week. We are repeating week 1 again. Lol! We'll keep repeating it until we can actually do it. I think we need a program called " barely moving/breathing to 5k ". My son and I hate running but my daughter seems love it and really keeps us motivated our reward for completing a 5K will be a trip to Disney to run in a 5K! Since I've told all my family, friends and coworkers our Disney 5K plans that adds to my motivation not too fail!

Name: Melinda
DisName: Pix13dust
Upcoming Races: W&D 2013?
Completed Races in 2012 (or earlier):
Favorite Race:
Anything else you want to share (age, where you live, etc): I am 44 ( 45 in only a few weeks, eek) I am overweight and suffer from asthma and decided it was time to claim my health back I live in western NY we have many opportunities for 5k races almost year round here - despite the unpredictable, unforgiving weather! My very in shape firefighter husband has finally " come on board " with my new health obsession and is quite supportive. I have a DS 11 and DD 9.
And for fun, favorite running shoe: my only running shoe, ever... Not sure if it's even a running shoe, Nike reax.

Welcome Melinda!!! You will love this group!!

I'm a C25K drop out. LOL
I used it to do my first ever race, Expedition Everest (At WDW) but the race happened before I was done the program. Fell off the wagon but now I'm back on for a 1/2. Either the WDW 1/2 in January or the Princess 1/2 in February.

Repeat any week you feel you need to! I repeated, I think, week 4 a few times.

**********************************************

Ran the ravine, well walked most of it. 80% of it was straight uphill, like hiking uphill.
Got stuck with Chatty Kathy (from my post on the BL thread) but he was soo tired and winded he didn't talk much.
Coach J said it was about 1.5 - 2 miles.
Coach Diesel (looks like Vin diesel (but hotter)) ended up walking with us because we'd never been on the trail before. He was moving though for someone who was walking. He jogged a bit when we caught up so we tried to run a little to keep up.
It was slick from the rain! But a nice hard course. My legs felt good because it was uphill. They don't seize up as bad when we do hills.

DS16 loves that run, so we will probably do it again. I'd like to see if my pedometer/GPS can log the trail. It's pretty heavily wooded so I'm not sure if could get good satellite service. I know I will get it when the leaves fall though.

It felt good to get some fitness back into my routine. It's been a while.

My goal for fall is to start running the roads near the little kids school as soon as I drop them off in the morning. Just do it before my day gets started.
I had made a promise to myself that when DD hit Kindergarten, which was all day, that I would work out daily since I didn't have the time constraint as an excuse. Well, she's starting First grade this year and I have yet to consistently fulfill that promise. I need to!!!
I know that from the school to the baseball field and back is .75 miles. But there are 3 roads that run parallel following the same route so I hope to hit all the roads up and back. We shall see!!

OK, time to get off this thing and get some housework done.

I hope everyone is having a good week!

Welcome Melinda! We are glad to have you. If you decide to add your race let me know and I will add it to the first page. I am 44 (45 in a couple weeks too which I am DREADING!) with a very fit husband, so I feel your pain. For a long time I weighed more than he did--and he is 6'3"--though he is very thin. He even drives the trainers at the Y a little crazy--he just goes and goes and goes with no injuries, no major issues. They complain to me about him. I think they are like me and just wish they could be that injury free. Anyhow, got a little off topic there. In Jan of 2010 I weighed ~42 pounds more than I do now. And I was very close to a couch potato, though I had run on and off over the years. In November I will be running my 8th 1/2 marathon. So it's doable.

I have been thinking about this a lot lately, kind of like how does running relate to life. (I tend to be a little bit too much of a deep thinker sometimes.) Long distance running is a process. It's not something you can get "good" at quickly without the risk of injury or burnout. It's that feeling of stick-to-it-ness that we can then draw from when we need it in other parts of our lives--which I am finding myself doing a bit of this summer.

Buffy--glad you are getting out there. I think it is a fabulous idea to exercise as soon as you drop the kids off in the morning. As for airfare for January. I am the queen of cheap airfare. It's almost like a game. I would go online and watch prices a couple of times a week for the next couple of weeks. I don't think we have seen good prices yet for January. I actually just recently bought October and November airfare cause the prices finally came down to something reasonable. I am waiting a bit on January. I know folks from New England have complained that the airfare for Princess is rough sometimes cause of spring breaks. We don't usually have that problem around here, but we do fly through Atlanta, so sometimes I have trouble getting a flight just cause it's full in Atlanta, not cause it's full around here--does that make sense?

****
I am having a little itbs flareup which has me very, very anxious. It has not made it to my knees yet, so that is a very good sign. Last night I ran for 50 min outside on a flat course. Today I ran for 50 min in the Y pool in the deep end and did yoga. I thought the deep end was going to be empty but there was a class. I don't think they were too happy, but it worked out in the end, and really I don't take up much space. I forgot how HARD it is to run in the pool I had sweat running off me and I was starving by the time I got to piyo.

I talked to one of the trainers and I am going to do the personal trainer thing for a bit in September to work on some strength stuff. The classes are killing my back. It's just not what I need right now, but I know I need something. I have known this girl for a couple of years and she knows what my goals are so I think it will work out well. She told me she thinks it will be fun. I don't know if it will be fun (I mean it's lifting weights and core exercises), but it will definitely be good for me. My body is starting to feel a little beat up from the long runs, but I know that's what I need to do to get ready for January.

I hope everyone is having a great Wednesday!

Maria--getting excited for your Providence RnR 1/2 this weekend!!! I hope the weather is better than last year.

What's weird for the Princess is that it's more expensive on the way home, the week after vacation for our area.

For both races I'm looking at Flying down on Thursday and back on Monday. I know Monday is not the best day to fly but if I do the Princess I don't want to run Sunday morning and fly that day, that would be bad.
Might have to though, we'll see.

I'm still looking though.
Jetblue
Southwest
USair
Expedia

I just hate the cost of flying!! So far the least expensive I can get is $650 for the 2 of us.
