So I'm loving the Garmin combined with my iPod nano for music.

We're at MIL's for the weekend, too, so I wasn't totally sure we'd get out today. I'm so happpeeeee!

Alice--I am glad you were able to finish strong. It can be hard to run with someone else, especially if you haven't trained together. It sounds like you are looking at it as a learning experience. How are all the injuries holding up? So how were the Pirate costumes?

I hope everyone is doing well. We took a quick trip to wdw last weekend. It was very last minute, but exactly what we needed. I ate a bit too much and I'm fighting a little to get back in a maintain range, but it was worth it. We flew in Friday night (landed in Tampa at 12:30am) and drove to Orlando. I thought we would get a quick run in at some point over the weekend, but we were both pooped. We did do a ton of walking and had a really great time! We have just about given up on eating out at home, so it was so nice to not have to cook or plan meals!

I did my longest run today since the end of April--10 miles. Felt a little beat up at the end. Mike said he did too. But it was a good run. I actually ended up taking a short nap this afternoon--I was so tired.

I am looking at training for the full with my longest run being 20 miles, and instead adding in more cardio workouts during the week. I'll let you know what I end up deciding. Today we did run 2 walk 1 and ended up at an 11:30 pace. Slow for a half time for me, but about where I would love to be at for the full.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Rose - yes, definitely a learning experience; mentally and physically. I need to train more and record my runs, times, etc. so that I can work on my endurance and am comfortable in my abilities.

Wow - what fun that you were able to have a quick getaway to WDW.

CRUIZEN MAMMA - do armadillos hiss and snarl at you like possums do? They always scare the heck out of me!

No hissing- but I sure was not expecting it- I was running in my MIL's neighborhood which is much more rural than I'm use to.

We really are very fortunate that we can do lots of fun things. FWIW, going gf has been good for my travel budget. I'm trying to see the positive here. We just don't eat out any more and very, very rarely get take out. We have saved a ton of money in the process.

I record all of my runs. It helps to have the garmin, but I record all the treadmill runs too. It is great to see trends/improvements/rough spots, etc.

I hope you are feeling better about the race.

ick! I don't think I would have liked that too much. I had a dog outside of his invisible fence chase me a couple of weeks ago and that was bad enough!

*****
So definitely leaning towards a training program where my longest run is 20 miles and with extra hard cardio workouts during the week. Then I will take my long runs with "tired" legs which should help my body to learn to handle the longer distances. Mike said by doing this you are training to run the end of the race and not the beginning. I just need to be careful not to over do it.

This week so far:
Monday I did yoga.
This morning I ran for 50 minutes (~4.5 miles) and then did a 60 minute Cardio Blast class this afternoon. It is a brutal class. I was sweating more than during my run if that tells you anything.

The 10 miles on Sunday seems to be tweaking my itbs. Uggh. I might have to finally break down and get a massage. Hopefully I will get it under control quickly.

Sorry for the mindless rambling tonight.

Hope everyone is having a good week.

Sadly things have not slowed down, DS16 got a job this week so we are going crazy even more. And DH needs to take a last minute trip to DC next week.

I really want to restart tomorrow. Thankfully official 1/2 training doesn't start until September (Kids will be back in school).
But, I'd like to get some light training in now.

Mom is looking at joining a local gym to walk and I might join her on my cross training days so I can use their elliptical and bikes.

Maria Are you going to the Rock n Roll PVD expo??

I was thinking of going on Friday.

Is anyone going to do the Rock n Roll NYC 10K?? I'm thinking of using that as a short term goal.

Hey Buffy!

I am definitely going, we have to pick up those numbers! It was a pretty good experience last year. Not as big as Princess, but a decent number of vendors, and a ton with info on local RI/NE races. Last year we drove down late Friday and didn't go to the Expo until Saturday. We decided we want to get there earlier this year, the traffic wasn't fun. I think we might go over Friday afternoon. Friday morning we have sports massages scheduled. It's my first, my dh swears by them. I'll let you know if it makes a difference around mile 12

We can pm so we can keep in touch and meet if we are there at the same time! I haven't seen anything on the Boards (I haven't looked very hard) about a DIS meet, last year there was a pretty good-sized contingent that raced.

I'll PM you my phone number.

the kids have camp until 12 and I'm a driver so I have to be there, but I'm going to drop them off at mom's around 12:15. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to get to PVD mall from here so I should be there by about 2ish.

It would be fun to see someone I know there!!

I'm not ready for this race but I'm thinking of signing up for the NYC 10K in October.

The sports massage sounds devine! DS16 really needs one of those. I'll have to look into it.

So DS16 ran a race in my old neighborhood today.
Surprisingly I had lived there for 4 years and had no idea about this race until yesterday. This year was the 50th anniversary, who knew?!?!

This race was 11.6 miles, I didn't do it because I'm not up to that kind of mileage yet and it was really hot and really muggy.

Anyway, please convince me that I can do the 1/2 in January!! I felt so out of place with all those fit people around. They weren't rude, in fact everyone was really nice but I just felt like that socially awkward tween at my first dance. I just felt like I had no business being there, and I was just a spectator!
Everyone was fit, I mean everyone! They all looked great coming in, just a hand full that collapsed at the end.
I was just like, who do I think I am, trying to run a half marathon?!? I'm glad I decided against the full, I would have been completely out of my element. I don't know if I can do this.

Tell me I'm not being stupid.

Buffy -- I won't tell you you are stupid (that is an awful word!), but I will tell you Cherie is right :

At Marathon Weekend you will see a higher percentage of very fit people than you would at, say the Princess. Here's the thing -- the race has to be all about you. Achieving your best, running your race -- you can't get caught up in how fit someone else looks, or how fast they are. You aren't going to win the race, and if you look around you, 99% of the people you see aren't either. Everyone is too caught up in their own race to worry about yours. Particularly if you surround yourself with WISHers, you will only find people who are supportive and encouraging. Go to the big WISH meet, speak to people, find others in your corral. Have someone to chat with before the race to share the experience and soothe those nerves. You're not going to be in Corral A, so everyone around you is racing for their personal best, not to win! They are not Olympic athletes, they are athletes just like you who want to have fun!

And you can do it. You've seen me post numerous times that I completed 3 of these at over 200 lbs...and you are less than that, so you've got this! Do the training, experiment with what will help you on long runs -- Gu, bloks, etc. Knowing that will give you a great start. There is nothing like seeing the sun rise as you are running to the Magic Kingdom -- you are going to love it!

Maria

Ack I meant not being stupid.
And I know, "stupid is an ugly word, Mr. Cooper" (Game Plan movie, I say it to the kids all the time)

Thanks for the pep talk. I just felt so out of place, and I did not feel that way at the Everest Race.

I felt like a complete loser today. I'm kind of glad I didn't attempt it. I don't know, maybe I'll make it a goal for next summer.

But on the up side I did get a 2.5 mile walk in today on the boardwalk while I waited for DS. Even though I did get funny stares pacing the boardwalk. I was slow but breathing in soupy air was tough. I can not wait until Fall!!!

Good morning!

Buffy--the thing is, there is always going to be someone fitter, faster, etc. I was doing a timed mile this weekend and really putting through this enormous effort and really struggling and this guy just went jogging past me like it was no big deal. Was it frustrating--sure. Did I temporarily want to throw in the towel-- Absolutely. I don't know why it still frustrates me so much, but it does.

The thing is, everyone is right. Sure it is a race, but it is YOUR race. As Mike likes to say they are never going to ask us to come out for the Olympic trials so all we can do is the best we can do.

What will enable you to cross the finish line is the training. This is truly something that requires one to put in the time. But the time is so worth it. Put in the time, and you will have a fabulous time!

I wanted to do a 1/2 marathon for over a decade before I finally completed my first in 2010. And believe me I cried at the end. I still cry at the end of every race. That is when I remember that it was worth every long run, every skipped night out, every early morning alarm. It is just, for me at least, a reminder that I can complete the things I set out to do.

****
I hope it is going well for everyone this week!

I tweaked my knee a little last week, but it seems to be improving. Hopefully it was a minor thing. My DS is visiting this week and I have been slacking a bit on my workouts this week. I think we have 11 miles planned for this weekend.
