We flew in and out of SJO within the past two weeks, and didn't have anything I would call being "harassed" at all (not like when we've gone to Mexico for instance). Coming out of the airport, you see gobs of drivers (taxi, shuttle) and some have signs with your name on them. Look carefully. We had a reservation with Interbus and I never did see anyone standing with our names on a placard, but after some initial confusion we did finally connect to the person who was there to pick us up & my name was on his wipeboard. If you don't have a plan for how to get from the airport to your first hotel then you might feel overwhelmed since there are many trying to get your attention.

Orange taxis are the official ones in the airport area, so if all else fails you can get a ride on those. If I were you, I'd contact your hotel to find out what the fare should cost from the airport so that you have a good idea of what it will be ahead of time.

There was a man who ended up helping us out, and some people might consider him a hustler, but all he did was ask us if we needed anything and I said I was looking for Interbus and he pointed and told me which way to go. When I couldn't find it, I came across him again and said I couldn't find Interbus and he found one for me (they are white shuttle vans & not all of them say Interbus on the side). It ended up not being the right one, but it all got worked out since the official Interbus person who had my name on his board came and found me, and he moved people from another shuttle onto the one that we'd already boarded. We ended up giving the stranger who helped us out a dollar or two and he was happy.

We will be on that trip too!

Have you booked your flights yet? I keep checking - the times (and prices) seem a bit out of control!

We finally booked on Tuesday. They were the lowest prices that we've seen so far, and they've already gone back up. We are flying in a day early. We thought about staying extra at the end too, but it just wasn't in the budget this year.

I am looking at booking our first AbD Costa Rica...and was thinking of adding 1 day to the end. Looks like a nice beach near that resort. Any Thoughts?

It does look fantastic! When DH checked into it though, it was going to add about $800 onto our trip. We decided it wasn't worth it for one night. If you can swing the cost or get a better deal on it, then I would definitely do it!

If you're interested in adding a day at El Mangroove, I suggest looking into booking with them directly. We got our extra night for just under $300. Not booking through ABD means we'll have to get ourselves to the airport, but I'm pretty sure that's not going to cost us $500...
Booking yourself might make an extra night possible!

My son (age 17) and I are booked on the 7/19-7/25. Really looking forward to it! We have never been to Costa Rica and this will be our first ABD.

Congrats on booking your first ABD! I've added you to the Roll Call on the first post of this Thread. It looks like you'll be on the same departure as DISer AZlady!

Hi, considering ABD vs Tauck culturious Feb 15 trip. The deal breaker is the weight limit. No significant one with tauck (within reason) but ABD has a weight limit of 220 for ziplining and 230 for white water. I looked at many tour companies down there to privately book and no limit. Anyone know why or if they are strict? Hubby is a big guy, 6'5" and 250. Liked ABD but the whole point is to both enjoy it.

I know ABD is really strict about age restrictions, my guess is they'll be really strict about the weight limit, too. But that's really just a guess. I'd suggest calling ABD. I know the one time I went ziplining, the company themselves weighed us.

We had big boys and men in our group, actually from one family and I am quite sure they are over 250 lbs. the dad is probably the same size as your DH. They all zip lined without any issues.

When I took this trip several years ago, ABD used this company:

http://www.skyadventures.travel/Arenal_En/Sky_Trek.html

Not sure if that is still their vendor. At that time ABD had the 220 lbs weight restriction listed on their website. I checked Sky Trek's website and there is not mention of a weight limit. The only limit I saw was a minimum height for children.
