Dining Requests on a ABD Trip - The DIS Discussion Forums

Is it possible to order some food by request during the dining venues that are included in the ABD trips? I am on a gluten free diet. While I can usually find something on the menus that I can eat, on the rare occasion that there isn't a GF offering, is it possible to get something made up? I noticed on the SW Splendors trip there is a Pizza Party lunch prior to an excursion. Since I would not be able to eat this, would it be possible to substitute my portion with a salad?

The Pizza Party on SWS is a buffet and I believe there was salad available. If you let ABD know ahead of time that you are on a gluten free diet, I think your guides will take care of it. You might want to remind them at the beginning of the trip, just in case. On SWS, most of the meals with the group are buffets. Right off the top of my head, I can't think of any meals except the ones we did on our own that weren't buffets, but I could be misremembering.

Yes, I think you should mention it when you book so they can be prepared to take good care of you when the tour starts. The guides are fantastic!

And I just remembered that the lunch at Goulding's Lodge is not a buffet. We all ordered from the menu, but they definitely had salads.

There are a few papers you are sent after you book your trip and you have to sign them and send them back. On the paper it asks a few questions and one of them is dietary. The guides will attempt to help you all they can but if you go on a trip to out of the USA, I don't believe there are as many options as there are in the USA.

That is good to know. We did the DCL Med cruise last year. One main reason we opted to see the Med this way was because I knew most of our meals would be on the Magic, and could accomodate the GF diet. However our open air restaurant in Positano was fantastic!

My husband is currently celiac so he is on a gluten free diet as well.

The only reason I even considered doing an ABD trip is I'm pretty confident that ABD will make a great attempt at finding something my husband can eat.

I've been told to note it when you book the trip and each time at dinner or whenever they are serving food(which we do already when eating out anyway).

I'll most likely do some kind of report on this when I get back but I'm not to terribly worried(ok I was for a bit but I no longer am) and neither is my husband.

I'm more worried now at finding gluten free food when we are on our own then during the adventure.

When I did the ABD add-on to the Med cruise in 2010, we had a family of four who ate gluten free (since one of the kids had celiac's). The Guides were fabulous at getting things set up for them, and making sure there were options for them. They were first to make pizzas (with gluten-free dough) on the thoroughly cleaned marble counters. They had options for them at each meal (in fact, they had a much easier time of it than I did with my "no tomatoes" restriction, which frequently seemed to stump the restaurants). I was amazed how all these places were aware of, and able to deal with, gluten-free diets.

Definitely let ABD know when you book, so that they can let the Guides know ahead of time to make arrangements. They have been fabulous each time dealing with my various diet restrictions. Make sure you discuss it with the Guides when you arrive.

I would echo the above comments. Our son has a tree nut allergy and once we told the guides once, it seemed like they were really on top of it. When we had a group meal, they would come up to us on the bus as we were approaching the restaurant and tell us that they had called ahead and taken care of it.

2 years ago, we went on The Alpine Magic trip, and a family we became quite friendly with had a member with a gluten allergy. In fact, there was even a second guest on our trip who also ate gluten free. ABD and the guides are incredible about taking care of dietary restrictions. I know first hand because 2 of my daughters are vegetarians. So, even though we were in Europe, where restaurants are not as accustomed to special orders, all dietary restrictions were fulfilled above and beyond. The special diets were served first and always without any stress at all. This is such a perk when traveling in Europe, especially in countries where the language barrier can be an issue. You will be fine, rest assured. I would agree that you should remind everyone of your allowable foods, both at booking and to the guides when the trip begins.
