yes, i realise that travelling when the dollar was 50cents would have been terrible.

sorry for the hyperbole

I agree it isn't tanking - we lived with that on our trip in 2008 - the dollar dropped 20c in a week, the first week of our trip

However, I don't really think it's the actual rate that I get irritated about, it's more the unexpected changes in the rate during the time that I am actively planning a trip or are travelling.

When we start to plan a trip most of us start working out a budget and the only way you can realistically do that is by using the exchange rate at that time. When the rate takes a sudden turn after a long stretch of relative stability ( as it has done now) it tends to make a bit of a mess of my nice spreadsheets and it can't help but be irritating. Also, having experienced a time when it did tank very suddenly I'm rather wary of it happening again.

The dollar is at a higher rate now than any other time we've hit the USA but I'm finding it's current performance ( and it's irritating divebomb in 2008) far more aggravating than the much lower rate we had on our first trip to the USA, or our first trip to the UK when we only got 40pence for AUD$1 ( Ouch!) . Because on those trips I knew the rate was low months beforehand, it stayed stable, and my budget didn't get knocked around.

Saturday and Sunday are the only days I can do my washing, and it's forecast to rain all weekend... Of course today is the day - mid way through its first load - that my dryer decides to die...

DH thinks he can fix it, but we have to wait until he can get the parts to find out...

poo bum fart head...

I'm off to try some new runners today, thinking ahead for WDW, need comfy shoes.
My DH got some skechers GoRun and he loves them, so light and comfy so i'll try some and get them at Endless

We now have a cross trainer, a spin bike and DH is getting a punching bag
(one of the person shaped ones LOL), I think this is a hint...

My suggestion is don't do it...

Sorry, not my place, but our neighbour did that, then his DD had kids, and now it's him and his wife in the grannie flat, and the kids and the grandkids in the house Don't do it.

i think you are wonderful parents for opening your house to your kids again, especially when they are grown. that's a lot of people and personalities under one roof. i know that my parents would never do that with us kids, as we all love each other, but in no way could we all live together. someone would be dead before the first week was through!!

good luck with your carport and renovations though!!!

we totally understand re giving up our home, but the Dh would kill all involved before giving up his home so no issues re the impending invasion.....

we have a huge 4 bedroom house, so space isnt an issue, just want to give them some privacy and a little place of their own.....getting them out of my place and when they move on in 6-12 months, the DS1 will move into it..giving him some independence as well.

and if all else fails..i'll send them all to my mothers

just as well i got the $850 airfares..couldnt afford it otherwise now

I have teens - and I am looking forward to them being out on their own and me having a tidy house for more than 5mins but, how do you say no when it doesnt work out and they turn up on your doorstep, bags in hand and tail between their legs.

As much as I would love to be strong and tell them 'you're on your own now", I think they will always have a home with me should they need it.

Although I have this theory that two women cant share a house - boys are easy, they will generally do as their told, all females like to be the decision maker. I think we will get on better when we dont live together!

I am feeling like a really bad mother we have just organized for Ds16 to come home early and not do the whole trip with us DH wants him to stay home and not come at all he is missing all the Disney part of our trip and New York lets just say that a extra $400 in phone calls to mobiles for this month was the final straw.

Karen I think you are awesome letting your kids and grandkids move home like that.
