great report!

Thank you for all the details! I took some notes that I hadn't seen before (like plastic spoons to eat the Hawaiin ice!)

What time did you arrive at Hanauma Bay? Not sure if my family will be jumping out of bed early by the 5th day when we plan to go. You have me worried about parking

Also, with all the time you spend at Pearl Harbor, how long were you there?

Thank you for starting the gear swap!! I will be using it in 12 days!!

Fantastic Report. Thank you so much for all the details.

But you had me stopped in my tracks at Costco sized POG! Like a gallon jug? Details.

Also can you bring your own umbrella to the beach? What about lifejackets to the beach? Did you notice any kids wearing them?

Thanks

What an awesome TR, thanks so much! We leave a week from today for our first visit to Aulani, so this has been very helpful I'm going to check out the apps you mention, since I'm addicted to my iPhone!

A quick question, which you may or may not know the answer to - do they allow you to bring a lei back to the mainland? I was hoping to pick one up from a lei stand on our way home, just to have a fragrant, beautiful re,under for a few days, but you mentioned the agriculture inspection looking for plumeria. Maybe if I stick to orchids I'll be okay?

Hi All!

I am so pleased to hear that folks are finding my report interesting and helpful. That makes me happy. I know everyone wants to see pictures and I will see what I can do about adding a few as I get them edited

There have been a couple questions asked that I wanted to try to answer, so here goes...

Izzy - Try to find a buddy if you can as that is the best and safest thing. They do have lifeguards at Hanauma Bay but you really don't want to have to use them. Maybe you can find someone here on the DIS who you can pair up with (and then you could even split that $1.00 parking fee too:-)

Cropper - We arrived at the bay somewhere around noon. I think we caught the shift change; folks who had arrived at the crack of dawn (the bay opens at 7AM) were winding down and we were the start of round two.

As for pearl harbor, we were there for about five hours total and we saw everything - barely. I would strongly urge you to try to get there as early as you can so that you can really explore the Mighty Mo, the Bowfin and the museum without stressing about the time. If you choose to buy the Passport ticket which gives you entry to everything and audio tours for the Bowfin and the Pearl Harbor memorial you can extend the ticket for an additionial visit within 7 days of the first visit for $10. So, if you run out of time and want to come back you can. and, you're welcome

Dsneygirl - Yup, you read that right, one gallon jugs of POG (they keep it in the walk-in fridge with the milk, eggs and veggies. You can use your own umbrella as far as I know (I saw a few). All the beaches there are public (even the one by Aulani) so the statewide rules apply (no glass, smoking or alcohol). Yes, I also saw quite a few kids wearing life preservers in th ocean and in the pools too. I saw a few adults wearing them as well. Remember, life jackets are available for resort guest use free of charge just for the asking. If I were taking a small child or someone who wasn't a strong ocean swimmer (or when I go back myself :-) I would absolutely make use of them especially in the ocean.

Mousejunkie98 - You can bring the lei back (or buy a fresh one there at the airport). They seemed to be looking mostly for uninspected I.e. homegrown fruit and veggies. As for the apps, I can totally relate there, I have over 600 on my iPad :-). Do your search for "Oahu" and you will find over 100 for the iPhone including those I mentioned.

Have an amazing time all! I will look forward to reading your reports as you all return.

Take care all, help lots of people and have a "wonder"ful day!

Thank you. I love Pog juice! We will definitely be hitting Costco ( I have read it is the cheapest gas as well) We definitely want our own umbrella as we will have a 6 month old. I'm going to need a wagon almost to haul all our stuff to the beach every day.

Did you sign out lifejackets with your room card each day? Or could you just grab one?

Thanks for the great trip report! Sounded like a great time (except for the part about almost getting dragged out to sea)!

This sounds like longan (dragon eye) fruit.

What a GREAT trip report! I love the details, will be helpful for the planner in me. Not sure if we are planning Aulani next year or the one after that.

Thanks for such a detailed report! We will be making our Aulani trek in February, and I'm definitely going to take some of your advice! This is NOT however, our first time to Oahu (more like our 5th), so we pretty much know our touring plan for the island and will include things you never thought of (like the palace and the Bishop museum). We also will be spending a second week in Kona, and will take in our luau there instead of on Oahu.

You are welcome to come write my trip report for me when I return! I am not good at those kind of details, but you did a great job!

Great report! Loved all the detail. We'll be there the first week in June.

Where were the thrift shops at? Close to Aulani? Always love good deals!

Thanks!

What an awesome trip report. I've taken lots of notes and I've only read the first two days. I will enjoy slowly reading the remainder as we prepare for our second trip (third for some of us) to Ko Olina but very first to Aulani.

BTW, I don't miss photos at all. There are plenty on other TRs and it slows down the page. Love me some words.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much for the very detailed trip report, it has been so helpful to read while planning for our trip to Aulani in August.

Especially loved your tips for Manoa Falls (I will be looking for the walking sticks on the side of the trail), and all the rest, like the plastic spoons (would have never thought of that) and thrift stores (again would have never thought of that!).

Thanks again!!

Smile We're neighbors!

Good morning,

I have been reading your great TR and just realized we're neighbors in Claremont. We have lived here for 40 years. My wife and son both graduated from Claremont High. We leave for Aulani on May 7th. Are there any extra "tips" you can give us for our two week stay? We're staying in a two bedroom as we are long time DVC members.

Thanks.
