The CC5K has been growing from a ship's activity to a port adventure. CMs at the ships would print out certificates to give to the runners (gone). They used to take a group picture with a character (gone). They took out the medal at one point but was brought back.

Run Disney now sponsors it (new bibs, new shirts). The medals are still generic medals that are being given by DCL at many activities.

It's becoming more and more popular. And bean counters take notice, hence the rumors of it becoming a paid activity.

So, UNofficially, if your child (under age 12) gets off the ship and just happens to start running (even if they don't START with you) and finish with you, there really isn't anything they can do. Again, no bib or runners medal. My DH said that he did not see any child starting the 5k so they obviously caught up with them along the way. ==>I am NOT endorsing or encouraging this, I am just stating what I saw.<==

*When I say officially, I mean they even require you to show a Photo ID for the excursion check in so there is no way to register your DH and have your DS show up instead and run in his place.

I will be posting RUMORS of possible changes coming up in another post!
On the Magic about a month ago - Officially, under 12 cannot register nor run. Some CMs do enforce this. In our case, they told the parents they were running on their own risk and would not get medals nor bibs. There were a few folks that showed up that morning - they were not aware that you had to sign up ahead of time. They were allowed to run but did not receive bibs nor medals as they only had the exact amount based on those that had signed up.

In the end, a few people did not show up, so they had the extra medals and gave them to those who ran it on their own.

I think I read this earlier...but too lazy to go back and read this morning.

I know under 12 can't run it (at least officially)...but can you push a jogging stroller? And how difficult would that be considering the terrain? My grandson will be 2 so too young for kids club but we'd love to all do it.

I too am okay with the 5k becoming a paid adventure. It might keep the number of runners down slightly and if it's true that a t-shirt, bib, and custom medal is included, it sounds like a pretty good value too!

Wow. How many ran it when you did? I ran it mid-July off the Dream and I would say *maybe* 100 people ran it. It was by far the smallest race I've ever done, so I'm curious what numbers you have experienced.

I ran it on the 1/12/14 sailing of the Dream. I signed up at the port excursions but they were allowing sign ups that morning at Evolution where we met. We were informed a photo ID was NOT required to get back on the ship as long as our 5k bib was showing and had our KTTW. Anyone who wanted to drop children off at Scuttles Cove went to disembark ahead of everyone else.
As soon as I was done running there were still hammocks available, I laid in one for awhile and there was no one around. I then remembered I wanted to buy a shirt and there was still some available. There were women's sizes and unisex sizes. The women's sizes run very small.

It was cloudy but I still sweated the most I have in a long time. Even though it was pretty windy on the island there was no breeze on the bike path loop, which you run twice. If it had been sunny it would have been pretty miserable, even thought the temps were in the 70s. It is flat, which is nice.

We ran the CC 5k on the 01/20/14 Magic sailing. We signed up at the Port Adventure desk. The morning of the run, we checked in at the D Lounge with our port adventure ticket, KTTW card and photo ID. They were also taking last minute sign ups.

Once the ship was cleared, we were off and walked to the start. We took all our stuff for the day so we wouldn't have to return to the ship. There is a "cooler box" next right to the bike rental booth that you can place items in. You can also check your kids into Scuttles on the way by.

We enjoyed the run. There were probably 50-75 people who ran/walked the course. I think there was 1 boy under 12 (couldn't have been much younger) who ran with his Mom and did not have an official number bib. They give out "Winner" DCL Mickey head medals to all who finish, no matter the time. There's 1 main water stop that you pass 3 times (it's at the entrance of the observation tower loop)

There are also Tshirts available for sale - mens, ladies and kids design & sizes. Adult shirts are $21.95 and kids $19.95. The ladies shirt is kind of like junior sized as they run very small.

I just did the 5K on 1/24/14 (Disney Fantasy). I would swear there were more than 200 hundred runners/walkers... You can sign up at any time at Guest Services (free) and you will get your excursion ticket at that time. Meet up was at 9AM in tube, we didn't leave until much after that, and maybe started the run around 10:15ish? The clock timer wasn't working but luckily I had my Garmin watch on! I got 30:20 which is slower than usual but I just wanted a nice run and didn't want to over do it! It was fun and very casual! My Mickey medal is a great memory of the cruise! Then I had the rest of the day to enjoy the beautiful island!

For August 2012, there were about 40 of us. This was a double dip and maybe all were going for the second day? I did it the first day... For Dec 2013, there were about 20 of us. Note that 90% were first time cruisers. Not being a port adventure that you could schedule ahead of time, or that it was a post xmas, pre NYE cruise, or who knows why, maybe reasons as to why there so few of us. There were 4 that did not show up...

This will sound like a really stupid question...but here goes.

I've decided to try my first 5K at CC. I've never been a runner and just recovered from a knee injury which required 6 weeks of P.T. so I'm not going to push myself. I started training with C25K app last week and our cruise is next week. I plan on incorporating the C25K style so I'll do run/walk most of it, so I might be one of the last one to finish.

I've watched the Youtube video of someone running the CC5K. Most of it looked like a pretty straight forward trail. However, I'm worried that I might get lost if I'm one of the last ones trailing behind everyone. I also have horrible sense of direction. Any chance of getting lost? Or is the course just one way road?

The course follows the paved trail to the runway, down the runway to the water station, hang a right, once around the loop, back onto the runway all the way to the end and then backtrack to the water station, one more trip around the loop and then back to the starting point. The water station will have a CM there who can direct you. You will pass him three times. No worries.

Also, when we did it in July a CM went off on a bike to check on people. Not sure if that's normal or because it was so hot.

I ran this past Sunday and had a great time.

When I signed up, the ticket said to be in D-Lounge by 8 a.m.; the Navigator said to be there by 8:15 a.m. We ended up not leaving the ship until about 8:35 a.m. because people were still filtering in due to the 15 minute difference in paperwork.

We were asked to have out KTTW card AND photo ID before we walked off the ship.

It was a nice walk out to the start (amazingly, people were complaining that we had to walk there versus taking a tram) and the route was explained a few times. I do hope that they change up the signage just a tad, maybe put on the route somewhere when you've hit a mile, 2 miles, etc. The weather was about 68 degrees when we walked off the ship, but the humidity was still thick.

They ran out of pins in the gift shop after I was done. I picked up the last one, along with a hat, and a men's and women's shirt. I wear a medium in men's but had to get an XL in the women's - it definitely runs small.

I spoke with a cast member and expect changes on the horizon.

I was under the impression that the Castaway Cay 5K was an official RunDisney event, but just not an official race. It is considered a "fun run" event instead of a "race"... which is why the minimum pace requirements don't apply... But the Navigator does say the "RunDisney Castaway Cay 5K" on it... And the t-shirts, bibs, etc. have the RunDisney logo on them...
