BoardWalk Inn: Club Level Review and Photos

DH, DD13 and I stayed four nights at BWI Club Level over spring break; it was our first BWI stay. We then moved to WL/CL for 6 nights where we last stayed in August. We've also stayed CL at the YC and CR and have stayed at all WDW Resorts except BC, GF and the value resorts.

We arrived, unloaded our luggage and parked our car. A CL runner greeted us and took us to the bellman's stand inside where we were then taken to our room by a bellman. I had requested a room with a BoardWalk View and no connecting door and both of my requests were met (thanks to a wonderful CM, Jackie). We were in room 4261 which is a Standard CL room and one of only 3 CL rooms on the 4th floor that aren't inside the Innkeeper's Club door. The room has a huge corner balcony that overlooks the grassy area near Wyland Galleries and Muscles and Bustles and the BoardWalk/Lake. The room is to the upper right of the Flying Fish sign (which hums when illuminated and is quite bright):




















The room has an extra window behind the sofa:





While the view is spectacular and the balcony is immense, a lot of noise reaches this room. The performers are right below the balcony. While this was great to watch for a while as they're very talented and entertaining, they are out there until about 10:15 with loud musical accompaniment. After several hours of this on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, it was a bit much. The main culprit is the extra window pictured above. It actually opens up and has a ladder beneath it to gain access to the Flying Fish's roof. It isn't sealed up properly so you can hear everything through it; wind and rain can even pass through the side of it.









The room is also very close to the dock. We heard the boat horns VERY loudly until close to 0100 sometimes and as early as 0600. This has never bothered me at any of the MK Resorts, perhaps because the rooms are further away from the boats and/or there is better soundproofing

You can also hear much that goes on in/near the concierge desk that's right before the Innkeeper's Club door. Most everyone who is staying beyond the Innkeeper's Club door has to go through it at least twice a day, so it's a high traffic area a few steps from the room door.

At first, being outside the Innkeeper's Club door didn't bother us. But after a couple of days of having to go through the door, we felt like we were inconveniencing the CM who sat at the desk. Sometimes we would just try to use our own KTTW, but sometimes the CM would then press the button and we would have to wait for the door to re-set and then stand out of the way as it automatically opened. The whole process got old after going back and forth 3 or so times a day. I would have much rather preferred to just enter my card once in an elevator and not every time I went to the lounge.

We were given the standard packet of information/brochures which did not contain our ADR/itinerary print-out. Luckily, I had brought a copy with us and had them in my phone, so I didn't ask for a print-out, though I'm certain they would have obliged. We also received taffy at turn-down and the welcome gift of delicious BoardWalk truffles.

Everything in the room was in good operating condition. However, there were drawings/scribbling on the back of the bathroom door and bathroom wall and there were black marks (Mold? Dirt?) on the ceiling above the sinks and some of the furniture had seen better days, which is not uncommon. For those of your wondering, we never had any towel animals, which didn't matter to us, but can be a nice touch time to time and we did tip daily.





We arrived during appetizer hour and much to our dismay, found almost the exact same items all four nights of our stay. The only hot items were a spring roll and satay which one night of four changed from a cylindrical shape to a triangular shape. DH jokingly referred to this as the changing of the hot appetizer geometry. While we were there (Thursday - Sunday), all of the cold appetizers were the same almost every night and they were all salad variations (without lettuce): bean salad, rice salad with duck, a bread salad with more beans& None of the dishes were labeled, but there was a sign in the lounge that listed that evening's items.



We ate breakfast in the lounge daily:
















There were cereal choices, and they did have oatmeal and hard boiled eggs which was nice. In the photo above, the oatmeal was missing, but was eventually replaced. They didn't have fresh pineapple or watermelon which we missed. Also, they don't have a fridge so items such as yogurt, soda and beer are in a tub with ice. The ice melts and then items sort of float around or sink. One morning we arrived at breakfast and there were no bowls or plates. Two CMs were standing at the entrance talking with each other and I had to interrupt to ask for plates or bowls. She seemed surprised that there weren't any and by the time they were put out, there were many guests standing waiting for them.

I noticed that none of the tongs had a dish to put them back into after use, like at WL for example. Consequently, some guests would hold onto the tongs to serve themselves, then place the tongs back into the dish of food and sometimes directly on top of the food, like with the bagels and croissants pictured above.

Some nights there was a different flavored cone filling, but there weren't any brownies, cobbler, lemon squares or magic cookie bars (at least when we were there) like some lounges have. While the cones looked pretty, when you peeled back the paper to eat it, the cone would start to fall apart and turn into a big mess. Milk was not out, but the CMs would always gladly bring a cup to you.

There always seemed to be many lounge staff available, but often they would stand in front of the entrance/kitchen talking (sometimes rather loudly) to each other. Often, the TV was quite loud and usually had ESPN on. I assumed this was the preference of some lounge staff who were watching. One family at breakfast asked if their son could lower the TV volume and change to a news program or kid's show.

One evening, we were in the lounge when a man came in with bare feet and talked to the CMs and gathered up food and drinks. The CMs never said anything to him about footwear being required, but twice I've witnessed CMs at WL tell guests they must have footwear on to enter the lounge. We also sat near a woman with only socks on her feet who put her feet up on the coffee table and one morning a woman came into the lounge in her nightgown and slippers. I know there isn't a rule about this specifically, other than, "Appropriate attire is required in the lounge." But, we were surprised that we witnessed this several times when we were in the lounge.

The lounge is fairly small with only two tables for five and about five tables for two. At breakfast especially, it can be hard to get a table. There are also two sets of love seats with two arm chairs surrounding a coffee table:













There is no seating on the balcony. But, the view of Illuminations from the balcony is great and it was never crowded. There is also a great view of the quiet pool and Garden Suites, but you can only see this if you go outside. The windows and doors in the lounge are covered with sheer fabric so unfortunately, there isn't any view to the outside from the lounge. I missed being able to see the beautiful grounds outside while eating.
















Here are photos of the resort-branded merchandise currently available. I can't figure out why it all says, "Disney's BoardWalk Resort" and not "Disney's BoardWalk Inn." There was also DVC-BWV merchandise.













We never took the buses from BWI, so I can't comment on them nor did we take the boats - we only walked to DHS and Epcot. The resort is very clean and well maintained and there are many wonderful sitting areas on each floor with lots of nostalgic items befitting a boardwalk-themed resort:
















DH and I loved being able to easily walk to DHS and Epcot and jog around Crescent Lake and to DHS. The room had a great view which we loved and we really appreciated being able to quickly convert our AP vouchers at the IG Guest Relations window. While we loved being able to grab a bite to eat in Epcot, we actually missed having a QS in the resort. I think if you love the decor of the GF, you would appreciate BWI's theming and being at an Epcot Resort is very convenient to Epcot and DHS.

Thanks for the review .... but now I'm wondering about my stay at BWV in Oct .... not going to change it because who knows when I'll ever get it again during F&W. Love the pictures!

All done your thoughts on BWI. I appreciate your insights. Four nights at a pop is the longest I tend to do at a Resort, and I can see how staying longer at BWI (or any WDW Resort) will make certain “needs and wants” importance levels different than my shorter Resort romps. Very interesting food for thought. Also, since I stayed before Daylight Savings Time, the Boardwalk seemed to be empty by 7:00pm-ish. I will keep in mind that a spring/summer stay with increased daylight hours will increase boardwalk view rooms nighttime noise quotient. Thanks for the review, WDWKOOK.

Don't change it! (Famous last words from a serial resort changer.) Most of my "issues" and disappointment related to CL, not the resort itself. Although, we just weren't crazy about the theming and BW, especially after four days, but that's just a personal preference.

Welcome back KOOK. Great review! I expected you to sell me on CL at BWI but that did not happen. I was afraid being directly on the Boardwalk might be a bit too noisy..... DH loved the resort and our room but did complain slightly about the noise and boat horns when I left the door to the balcony open while out there if he was resting inside.

Thank you for the balanced review and welcome home

As you know I love the BWI and the CMs but I had a sort of ho-hum trip last year, the CMs were as wonderful as always but I arrived home in two minds whether to dip my toe in the water and try somewhere new so I am staying round the other side of the lake but of course will pop by and say hello.

Your photos are gorgeous and one day I really must try WL as you've sold me on that one

Edited to say my trip was still amazing but my 'ho hum' experience was centred around some other guest 'encounters' which was nothing to do with the resort or wonderful CMs.

I was mostly concerned about the CL review. Our last stay at the BWI was a Water View room - non CL. You actually caught part of our balcony in one of your photos. We did not mind the location. After staying Poly CL last Summer which we enjoyed, I am a little concerned about the BWI CL lounge dynamics. Will have to review with DH. Thanks again!!!

NNQ! Love it. The new DIS acronym - Nighttime Noise Quotient. Is my DH's snoring included in this quotient?

Four nights is one of the shortest WDW stays we've had. We stayed 12 nights at WL last summer and we're booked for 13 nights this summer. My "needs and wants importance level" is just about the same from check-in to check-out, save for the 10th or 11th EWP or Wishes

The BW buskers and vacationers bustled till about 10:30-ish and then it was mostly just the CMs laying on the boat horns into the wee hours of the mornin' (pretend this guy's in a boat).

Thanks, Sheila! I'm sure you're not the only one who thought I'd love BWI - I thought I would, too. But it's okay, there's a WDW resort out there for just about everyone

Yes, I remember your review and photos!

The "other side" does have its pluses in that the YC (and BC) aren't directly on the BW so the lake view is much quieter and more serene. Also, there is a QS and you're a tad closer to Epcot.

My DN spends long vacations like you at WDW and her “needs and wants” from a Resort are similar to yours. Since Floridians DH & I do lots of long WDW weekends we don't get quite as much Resort relaxation/down-time at any one resort, making some Resort amenities not so important for us and others more-so. So I like seeing your BWI report from your long-stay perspective. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Good & bad, it all deserves to be heard. No resort is for everyone, and honest feedback is SO helpful for those trying to make a decision.

I do suspect a different room location would have made quite a difference in your overall impression of the resort. As you know, we stayed in a room overlooking the garden courtyard (and Eiffel Tower). And, though I was initially disappointed not to have a water view, the view we had was SO quiet & lovely & peaceful, I fell in love with it. You feel so removed from the hustle & bustle of the Boardwalk.

I have to agree with this, though:
You can also hear much that goes on in/near the concierge desk that's right before the Innkeeper's Club door. Most everyone who is staying beyond the Innkeeper's Club door has to go through it at least twice a day, so it's a high traffic area a few steps from the room door.

Though we were inside the Innkeeper's Club door, we were very close to it (I think only one or two rooms away), so we could hear a lot of foot traffic. I would definitely request a room further down the hall next time. And, in general, we found the rooms at BWI to be less soundproof than the other resorts where we've stayed.

As to your overall CL experience, I really hope it was an anomaly. I can tell you that during our stay, the hot appetizer items were different each night. And we never experienced a lack of dishes (and I'm almost positive they had little dishes to hold the tongs, too...but I could be mis-remembering). One thing we also experienced, unfortunately, was inappropriately attired guests. A man and his older mother came in one morning in pajamas, fresh from bed, hair still a mess, and proceeded to get their breakfast & chat with cast members. It seriously boggles my mind that full-grown adult human beings do this. As a reminder, everyone, your hotel ROOM is your private space. The entire rest of the hotel is public. DRESS ACCORDINGLY.

Rant aside, I chalk this up to the BWI cast members being TOO friendly. They're essentially letting the comfort of a few guests interfere with the comfort of all the other guests, so they need to buck up, do their job, and discreetly turn away guests who aren't appropriately attired.

Thanks again for your insights. And who knows -- you just may find yourself longing for the BWI again someday. Remember, I didn't think I'd be in a rush to go back to WL, yet here we are.

Thank you for your great review. Really helps to know how loud it might be. DH is in love with BWI for some reason, but I think that much noise could be really hard on our younger ones. We have debated WL, so it helps to know that is much quieter at night. Thanks.

Nail hit on the head, bowbat. Wish we could post your words (and enforce it) in all lounges:

If you wouldn't dress like that to go to McDonalds or Target, why in the name of all things Disney do you find the CL lounge a good venue for bare feet, slippers, adults in PJs/gowns and robes. You're exactly right that IMHO, too, BWI (and CR's CL) have allowed the "comfort" of a few guests to supersede the comfort of most guests. OK, my rant's over now, too. I'm glad we both got that out of our system

I had originally requested the "Epcot/Courtyard View", but since I had already been shown a room with that view last summer, I was very curious about the BWV and took the risk since it was only for four nights. While it wasn't ideal for us, the BWV wasn't our only misgiving. The theming just wasn't for us and the lounge just couldn't compare with WL - it just wasn't "right." We also missed the relative tranquility of the MK Resorts area and the more "spread out" feeling of the resorts and the theming and setting. I just don't see us returning to BWI, bowbat, but it wouldn't be the only WDW Resort we've said that about
