Barcelona vs Vancouver?

I'm trying to decide between a few cruises and two of the cruises start theses places. I'm trying to find good info on both places. I know both are prob very different. I will say I got off a cruise in 2011 that ended in Vancouver and from the bus ride to the airport from port I found it very beautiful and told myself I'd be back one day. I'm sure whatever cruise we choose will be great.

Rather than concentrate on Vancouver or Barcelona, do you want to see Alaska or the Mediterranean?

**It later occurred to me that maybe you are looking at repo cruises and not cruises to Alaska or within Europe. If you are thinking about a westbound Transatlantic cruise from Barcelona and have never visited Europe, spend as much time there as possible before the ship sails.

I live in Vancouver and recently visited Barcelona. Love both but they are very different. Vancouver is modern, prosperous (there never was a real downturn here), clean and friendly. The main attractions are natural, like Stanley Park (huge natural park surrounded by water right beside downtown). The city is relatively new and lacks comparatively older historical structures. There are a few decent museums but in general the man made attractions like that are pretty weak compared to other major cities. The city is mostly very safe except for some parts of the downtown east side.

Barcelona has a very different energy. It's older, has way better museums and public spaces within the city. It's dirtier (I didn't care) and traffic is much worse (drove me a little nuts, especially people just stopping wherever). Safety wise I'd say less safe but not a major problem. It's likely more different than where you are from and that was appealing. The people were alternately indifferent or super helpful.

Price wise I found them to be actually similar.

no I'm looking at either Alaska or Mediterranean cruises, repo cruises fall in bad time for us. And both Alaska and Mediterranean are cruises I'd like to try I'd do both if I could since right now I want to do both the same amount, so just trying to find info on both cruises and ports for now

We haven't done Europe yet, but we did do Alaska in Sept.
We spent the weekend before in Vancouver before the cruise left on Monday.
What a beautiful city. So clean and friendly.
We did Stanley Park, the hop on hop off trolley and just walked and walked.
Granville Island is another perfect spot to spend an afternoon.

I guess eventually you will choose between the two. But my 2 cents is Vancouver is a great place to visit. We will go back someday for sure.

I think Princess does Hawaii cruises out of Vancouver in 2014.
If they continue that path I will get my chance to get back to Vancouver and see even more.

Royal Caribbean does one-way cruises between Vancouver and Honolulu in the spring and fall as it repositions to/from Australia: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findac...AI&date=&ship=

That's a tough question! Barcelona is beautiful with tons of history so beautiful old buildings to see. Vancouver is more modern but there is plenty to see both in Vancouver and nearby. I will say that Vancouver was one of the friendliest cities I've been to in a while. Whoever we stopped to talk with or ask questions of were so friendly and helpful!

Thanks for the info.

I have my fingers crossed that Disney will go again in 2017. We really want to go back for our 30th anniversary. Spent our honeymoon there in 1987.

But its in January, don't know if we will have any luck with any cruises going there in January.

Yes, but you are totally a DCL girl, you have done 20 cruises. I have only done 7 with 8 coming up. Stick with Disney for Alaska!! Nothing beats it!

I grew up in Europe and my heart is partial to anything European, however for this, I'd definitely choose Vancouver. We sailed with DCL to Alaska this past June (6/2013) and it was the best vacation ever. We spent 2 days prior to the cruise in Vancouver and LOVED it! It truly is a wonderful, vibrant city. Barcelona is fun and other posters have given a great perspective on both cities, but my preference is Vancouver.

In reference to the Med vs. Alaska - it's a tough choice and I know there will always be threads on this since it is a tough choice but it comes down to preference. We are looking to cruise *again* to Alaska in 2015 vs. going to the Med for the first time (on a cruise). My DH and DS both said Alaska again, hands down. There are so many things to see and do, just like with the Med, that you *need* another cruise to get more accomplished.

The airfare to BCN makes it so cost prohibitive that Alaska for us is definitely cheaper.

Have fun,
Heather

I agree Alaska price wise is cheaper for us too. I'm sure I'll enjoy either one, so just the seeing what one I want to do first.
