Is it wrong to leave a job for a less paying job?

Here are the facts
1) I am not happy at my current job
2) I would be moving to a company I have wanted to work with for over 12 years
3) I have bills!!! though the cost of living is less where I'm going
4) I will make less since I have to start at the bottom
5) Office politics at my current job have prevented me from getting promotions
6) I would be moving away from family and friends (though I wont be alone)
7) my estimated pay cut 35%
8) im 35 and feel if i don't do this now ill regret it forever
9) Im walking away from a company I worked at for over 10 years
10) my manager plays favorites and usually the hardest working people are the ones who never get recognition. I get more recognition from co workers then management.

thoughts?

It's only wrong if it's wrong for you. If it's the right job for you and you'll be happier, then I'd say if you think it's right, it is. I don't think the word "wrong" is the right one to use. You have to be happy with your choices. Don't worry about what anyone else thinks.

I did the same thing, and for many of the same reasons you cited.

Since I made the move, I've never been happier in my professional life.

Take the chance..life is too short to stay in a job you're not happy at.

Good luck

"No regrets" is a great motto....I think you're young enough to still move on, up, around, and do what you want to.
I left a job after almost 20 years, with a lot of the same problems you've stated.
I took a BIG pay cut (more like 50%) but didn't have to move.
I'm happy I did what I did.
Good luck!

If you can afford to do it, I say go for it. I've seen office politics happen more than once where the hard worker was the one who seemed to get overlooked. You're still pretty young. If you think you have a chance to advance at this company and recoup your salary eventually (or, honestly, even if you don't but think you'll be much happier), I would do it (again, assuming no serious financial setbacks).

There's more to life than money. If you will make enough to cover the essentials, I say go for it.

I think you answered your own question with #1,2 and 8

Is it wrong? Absolutely not!! Why stay someplace where you are unhappy, your work is not recognized and you get passed up for promotions? Life is way too short! Go get that new job! Plus, it might pay less right now, but if there is a better chance of promotions - you might end up making way more there than where you are now.

I took a 40k cut for my current job.
It has totally been worth it.

If the job potential and cost-of-living is better, I'd totally go for it. Nothing is worth working at a job you're miserable in, it effects your health and your whole outlook on life.

Last October I quit a job that I hated and started at the bottom at a company in a completely different field. I am sooo happy that I did!! Everyday I think about how grateful I am that I didn't waste another year of my life in a job that made me miserable. BTW, I'm 37.

My DH just changed jobs for some of these reasons and we are moving away from friends and family for less money so I say to go for it !
